Message 1244037 - Posted: 9 Jun 2012, 17:46:34 UTC - in response to Message 1244019.

It is very difficult when a bear is no longer afraid of humans. When they move such bears around here, they need to be moved hundreds of miles away from humans. They will travel great distances for food. I wonder how far away from Steve's area you have to go to be hundreds of miles away from humans?

I know what you mean. We are such a "successful" species that it is hard to find open spaces to relocate animals anymore. (Why is human over-population not a bigger world-wide concern?)

Anyway, Eric comes from a (by California standards) sparsely populated and extremely rural place. Imagine how happy the residents of this area would be if everybody in Wisconsin and neighboring states dumped their problem bears and wolves up there?!!!

In California, every once in a while some cougar develops a "taste" for jogger. The poor kitty is generally treed and shot immediately, which I totally understand. It is a sad, but necessary evil.

RIP Steve's bear.

A cougar came down from the local mountains above Santa Monica, they did shoot a dart into the kitty to try and save it, but then the cat bolted from it's hiding place in a building courtyard that was enclosed on 3 sides, they could have waited until the opening was blocked off to shoot the dart, so the SMPD shot the cat instead, killing it, people didn't like that one bit...

As to Your Kitty, Joggers must be tasty lean meat, Jogger juices indeed, still it was too bad the big cute kitty cats couldn't be saved.

That being said, Chris.......

I do not hunt......
I shot a bunny once in self defense......LOL.

You have every right to express your dis-approval of something you have no heritage to.

Hunting deer in Wisconsin is for some, a God given right.

And I really have no problem with it. Given the rampant population of them and the rate of deer-car collisions in the past few years.

I do have a problem with simple trophy hunting, and the shooting of some species that are deemed only as trophies with no regard to the species' long term survival.

I too do not like trophy hunting, hunting for food and to keep the deer population under control is ok with Me, as they can be as dangerous as a big cat, those antlers on their head aren't just for show, their deadly weapons.

If I lived next door to Steves neighbour, I'd be reporting him to every animal charity that there was, copy to all newspapers, and I would also be reporting the local police to the State Governor for going along with it. That might be the way you do things out there, we are a bit more civilised in the UK.

If this message disappears or a I go on holiday, so be it.

Chris, do you still have wild animals in your part of the UK that eat people (like bears do)? That possibility changes your point of view about cute little furry creatures.

The point that I was trying to make in previous posts was that you might have to transport that bear a VERY long way to get it 100+ miles away from humans. Even here in southern Ontario you are looking at 2 days drive to get a bear that far away from edible humans. I agree that shooting the bear is a shame, but as a taxpayer you have ask what are the priorities for your hard earned money. One bullet is very cheap.

Extinction is also very expensive and every creature needlessly lost is a loss for genetic diversity as this effects survival, moving the bear would always be better, even if the bear needs to be flown somewhere instead of driving, as everything is in some way dependent upon others for survival, no creature large or small can exist by itself and this applies to Humans too.

It took me some time, but after many visits I have come to understand deer hunting in Northern Wisconsin. Deer meat is a very important part of the local diet. Not much gets wasted. If somebody doesn't want the meat from a deer he/she has shot, that person generally donates the deer to the local food shelter up there. Bears are hunted there too and the meat is made into sausage.

Natural predators (wolves, cougars) for deer are generally gone from that area. The main deer predators now seem to be cars, diseases and hunters. I don't have to like it. I don't have to directly participate. But I do understand.

The bear was killed at 1:00 AM, while almost breaking into my neighbors house. Their are children around here, as well as many pets. The bear had been destroying things for several weeks. Several neighbors had tried to scare it away, including the neighbor across the street from me. That is where it was last night. Directly accross the street, on the neighbors back deck, tearing the place up. The bear refused to run away when a warning shot was fired, so he shot it. I feel bad for the bear, as I really liked it, but I understand they are dangerous, especially when not afraid of humans. My neighbors property was under attack, and the bear was trying to get into his house. I don't blame him for shooting it. I don't know of any bear relocation program around here, especially at 1:00 AM. I am glad no people were hurt in the last few weeks as the bear went from house to house destroying whatever he could find that smelled like food.

The police recconized his right to protect his property and/or family, and gave hime a legal bear tag, which prevents him from being prosecuted for taking a bear. It was a sad thing, but I understand.

I can tell you from personal experience that animal rights tends to be at the back of your mind when you are facing down a polar bear. I bet a person would feel the same way over any bear for that matter.

Doing that when one has no other means, I can see as that's reality, sad as it is.

Hon, it did not take you a few moments of conversation with Eric to explain this?
He came from Wisoncsin, of course.
You had to make a research project of it??

Is that car sporting one of those rubber baby bunny bumpers that I'm always hearing about in triplicate?

Don't get me wrong......
The Kittyman would not go out of his way to hurt even a bunny.
Even though one of the little dastardly thingys munched on the trunk of one of my baby trees a couple of days ago.

Little rat.....

Ahoy, shipmates!

I suppose insects are counted as critters, too. There seems to be a very promising gnat summer incoming hereabouts.

However, am not exactly sure how happy am about this.

Regards

PK

They are abundant here in Wisconsin this year......nasty little gits.
Mosquitoes in Wisconsin are legendary....ask Angela and Eric.
They have been known to carry off cows to take back home for food.
