Hello friends, and welcome to the thirteenth installment of our Critter Cafe. If you are new to us, this is a place where Critter People gather and talk about anything and everything. All are welcome here and there is no such thing as "off topic" in the Critter Cafe. To start us off, here is a shot Eric took this afternoon. Eric calls this shot "Stalking Fail" |

The squirrel certainly has the high ground, food is close, pole is close, shrubs are close. Cat is in the open, and has been spotted. Squirrel is weighing up its options - frontal attack, strategic retreat via food, tactical withdrawal up the pole, skim up the pole then bomb the cat, shoot into shrubs, followed climb pole and bomb cat. Cat is thinking, hmm, he's spotted me so how do I make this defeat look as if I planned it that way... If California squirrels are like Canadian squirrels, I suspect the squirrel was over the horizon while the cat was still trying to remember if squirrels taste good. |

Or like those I used to have at a previous address it would be up the pole, dangling its tail temptingly to the cat. The cat would try a few lunges, then get bombed by a few nuts, pebbles etc. that the squirrels stored up there just for this task. The cat would then beat a hasty retreat, in the vain hope of getting closer next time. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Maybe they're keeping their distance from each other because the skunk has sprayed one of them :) Member of the People Encouraging Niceness In Society club. |

To start us off, here is a shot Eric took this afternoon. LOL, friend! Despite being from the hunter-friendly, gun-loving, tree-filled state of Wisconsin, Eric cannot shoot off firearms in our urban California backyard. Eric and Spawnie are pretty good friends, actually. If Eric did decide to take a shot at something, I'm afraid it would probably be the squirrel. The only thing that might give him pause is that he would NEVER hear the end of it from his wife, and well... I believe my husband places a premium on quiet time. |

The Squirrel have coexisted with Spawnie for a few years now. You met him and are still here. He is a really laid back Kitty. BTW, I saw one of your nephews going up my cherry tree. Not sure where it is now, but I have a nice sturdy bush flanked by Roses, that would provide it with a safe home. Pluto will always be a planet to me. May I suggest you wrap the cherry tree trunk with a couple feet wide metal collar, if you like cherries that is. My nephew will find something else to eat or will wait for the over ripe ones to fall. |

Gary I love Cherris, plus I don't mind sharing. There is bummer law here, that I can't donate the extra. Gary might correct me, but is the last I heard Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Gary I love Cherris, plus I don't mind sharing. There is bummer law here, that I can't donate the extra. Some of my relatives have the bad habit of testing every cherry on the tree looking for the ripe ones ... I shall try and send the message not to do that in Stockton. I also suggest here in CA that you don't encourage them too much if you have pets. Sylvatic plague is endemic. In fact it is a good idea to make sure you pick up all fruit on the ground so other rodents don't make it home. I know you can't sell them and I suspect also can't give them away if they end up in commercial channels -- anywhere that a food handler permit might be required. Friends and neighbors all you want. But check with a local food bank, they would know better. |

Gary, I have been eating them straight of the tree. Fine. Just so the fleas don't bite. |

Lots of cute critters around here, but I have to say I enjoyed the skunk the most. Any critter that can raise their tail and clear a room can be my runnin' buddy any day! |
