Windows 8 Release Preview now available

Hmmn, before being allowed to download it, it runs a compatibility check, which from mine, shows up a glitch...

It states that I need to install an app to play DVD's yet in the compatable list it shows Roxio.

Sneaky devils! Previously, the 2 Win 8 previews downloaded as .iso files. With this one, it downloads an upgrade assistant, then after running the compatibility test, it downloads the preview - unfortunately, I cannot find it anywhere & on checking, it's moved onto "getting files ready"

Once this is done, one is presented with a menu -

1: Instsall now
2: Install by creating media
3: Install later from your desktop.

I've chosen no 2 & it then gives you another 2 options - ISO image or a usb flash drive (must be at least 3gb].

I didn't have any issues in being able to download the ISO. I just went here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso, selected the languages I needed, and then downloaded. To download the Server 2012 release you need to have, or make, a MS Live ID. However it can be downloaded from here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/evalcenter/hh670538.aspx?ocid=&wt.mc_id=TEC_108_1_33

Yep, I also ran both. Don't like them & for my own network, will wait for Win 9 if that is an improvemnet of course. If not, then it's going to be a pita.

However, being a local system builder, I need hands on knowledge for those customers who will have it & then the usual cockups needing to be dealt with.

What I find astonishing is that the comaptibility test stated that my AM3 mobo will not be able to use "secure Boot"....

Could catch users unawares.

If no metro ui then you have windows 7 minus the start button. I had win 8 and promptly removed it. I read you can the have metro not load and have the clasic desktop instead. Windows what trash just a cash grab by microsoft. Like xp and vista crap now win 7 and win 8 crap.

While not listed in the system requirements you need to have a CPU with NX bit support. Such as a Prescott P4 or a 64-bit capable AMD processor. Otherwise you will get a message after installation that says:

You missed the release of Windows NT which started the ball rolling (first fully 32-bit OS that all subsequent MS OS' are based on). It was released before Win 95 (Jul 93) so we are on an odd numbered release!

Do you mean Windows NT 3.1, 3.51, or 4.0? As I stated I didn't list the OS's which included the version number in the name. Such as Windows 3.11, 3.1, 3.0, 2.1, 2.0, 1.0 or any version of MS DOS.

Windows NT was a major release like Windows XP & 7. It the 'father' of OS' that are on your list so why leave it out? Actually, it was THE most major release of any MS OS. The Initial NT release was simply known as NT even though it was numbered as NT version 3.1. I wouldn't leave it out of your list of MS OS'. It's kind of a landmark release for them. The stuff MS released before NT is a different kettle of fish even though DOS is still included in the current offerings. It's like comparing Apple's OS 9 to OS X.

My point is that Sirius B's conclusion appears correct about Win 7 being an odd-numbered release...[/u]
