Message 1238882 - Posted: 29 May 2012, 20:24:57 UTC

Hello all - here's a quick message to inform you that yes, we are coming out of the usual Tuesday maintenance outage at the moment, but in less than two hours I'll be bringing everything down again for a planned lab-wide power outage to make repairs after the short circuit that clobbered several buildings two weeks ago. This planned outage will last roughly two days. I'll try to bring a few things up here and there (like the web site just inform people what's going on) on generator power if possible, but simply expect everything to be off and unreachable for about 48 hours starting about 90 minutes from the posting of this message.

Also I'll note that yes, bruno (the upload server) had a garden variety kernel choke on Saturday morning. I was able to kick it with Dan's help (he ultimately came up to the lab himself to power cycle the machine). Usual drill around here.

Thanks for the news Matt, I hope not too much in the lab/the building itself was damaged.

Thanks a lot for the timely info... Best of luck after the repairs getting things back to normal again. For now we will wait and see what happens. See you on the other side :-)

Only found out about this after the fact. I take it there was no possibility of an earlier warning? Appreciate the two-hours notice, nonetheless.

Just wondering... would this sort of notice be suited to the 'Notices' section in BOINC? I notice Einstein@Home seems to have its news updates tied to it, but SETI@home does not - I have to check the S@h site manually. Not a big deal, but for outage notices like this one, it might have helped.

Either way, thanks to everyone in the team for their efforts.

Wedge, we all feel your pain, but please know they did what they could, and have made a fix to the Boinc "notification" system for seti@home. Next time you should get a message in your Boinc.

Best regards.

I would like to record my thanks to Matt and the team for their dedication to the project. I know pretty much what goes on behind the scenes to keep Seti@Home up and running, which just recently came to the fore. There will always be 1/2 a dozen or so who want to have a moan, but those of us in the majority sincerely appreciate being kept in the loop, in the best way that they can.
