Message 1238819 - Posted: 29 May 2012, 14:13:19 UTC

Hello All
I have a problem with BOINC.
I don't want it to start automatically at PC startup.
I have unchecked the relevant bit in my options (still starts)
I have unchecked the option to start in MSCONFIG (it still starts)
I have used the Ccleaner option to try and prevent it auto starting (it still does)
Any ideas please?
I like a program to do what I want it to do ,and am even considering deletion of BOINC altogether if i cannot start it manually.
Any ideas please.
cheers to all
Andy

I don't have any further suggestions, you have done everything I would have done at this point.

I do have a question though, is this behaviour new since you started running the latest version??

I use the cCleaner option to allow/prevent 6.10.60 from autostarting and it prevents ok. It's been years since I allowed BOINC to autostart. It deleted a bunch of work once doing that and I have had it disabled since.

Oh...you could just rename the executable files, BOINC.exe and Boincmgr.exe to something else. That should slow them down. Then rename them back to original and start BOINC running when you want to...

Hello there
and thanks for your reply .Yes this is the latest version. And the problem has started since installing it. Like yourself I have used CCleaner to disable previous versions and then start them manually, which I prefer.
Your right of course about renaming and as I have been participating in SETI-HOME for about ten years now (how the years fly,and no just the light ones)and although I haven't always been as conscientious as other SETI hunters in running the program I always come back to it.
Cheers to you
PS Perhaps this new version is designed to make us crunch whether we wish to crunch or no.

The Normal Way to stop BOINC from starting at boot time is this:
Open BOINC Manager, Advanced view, Tools, Options, Uncheck "Run Manager at login?" and then exiting BOINC completely to make that stick.

The actual run command happens from the registry.

Appreciate your input Ageless.

I believe the OP has tried that already - line 4 of his opening post, "I have unchecked the relevant bit in my options (still starts)".

I believe the OP has tried that already - line 4 of his opening post, "I have unchecked the relevant bit in my options (still starts)".

The clinch is this: If you just change it in BOINC Manager and then power the computer down, or reboot, it won't work. You have to make the change and then fully exit BOINC. Only then will the option 'take'.

Message 1239486 - Posted: 1 Jun 2012, 15:57:25 UTC - in response to Message 1239066.

Hello Again
Perhaps using this logic if I select the option in SETIBOINC to start at PC startup, then shut it down ,turn off PC ,then when I next re-start PC re-select my original choice which is of course NOT to start ,shut down Boinc turn off PC and restart again PHEW! maybe that might work.
Perhaps I should try going back to 6.something earlier version .
Anyway thanks for your help.

Not that complicated.

As already said: just change the setting and exit BOINC (this saves the setting to the registry)
(! Check in Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer that both boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe exited (boinctray.exe will/may be there - it is normal))

Now you can start BOINC manually (no need to reboot now)

If at the next reboot BOINC starts again - you may have other "Run" shortcuts (e.g. in Startup):
Try Autoruns (it is similar but better than MSConfig or CCleaner)
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

First Exit BOINC, then run Autoruns.exe

Find (Ctrl+F):
BOINC

(you may copy (Ctrl+C) any line found that contains "BOINC" string and post it here to ask about it if you need.
You want to uncheck only line(s) about boincmgr.exe
Not the one about boinctray.exe (else setting "Do not run while computer is in use" will not work)

Run Autoruns.exe again just before you reboot to check again the line(s) about boincmgr.exe are unchecked.
)

Hello

If you look at the earlier posts you will see I have tried all suggestions with no joy.
I even removed BOINC completely with an advanced unin prog ,rein ver 6. something (my last version), but deep joy that also starts automatically.
I am going to uninstall the program and try again sometime in the future.
I simply cant be bothered ,I have spent to long on this.
Thanks to all who have tried to help.
cheers Andy (ex of SETI) For now!

If you look at the earlier posts ...

I don't post before reading.

Most probably - you make a change (using MSConfig, CCleaner, Autoruns, RegEdit, ...)
but then Exit BOINC manually which re-enables the old setting.
Check again just before you reboot (using MSConfig, CCleaner, Autoruns, RegEdit, ...)

It's very easy to stop BOINC from auto-starting (there is even option during the install).
(the old versions of BOINC put shortcut in Startup, new versions - in Run key in the registry)

The all auto-start entries for BOINC (even weird like manually made by someone scheduled tasks) are for sure shown by Autoruns

The only I can think of which will not be shown is setting in program like Process Lasso to "Keep running (restart if terminates)"

If you want more challenge - try to stop Google Chrome from auto-updating, you will spend much more time ;)

OK Sir!
Will try again.
I wan't to be a participating member.
Don't no why I have developed such a bee in my bonnet about this, It doesn't REALLY matter if it auto starts anyway .
I will look for the option NOT to Astart when I rein Boinc.

Sorry, I may be wrong about this, there is only option for the screensaver:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC

(the last time I needed to install BOINC was maybe almost 2 years ago)

If you want you may check the following keys/values using RegEdit (but Autoruns is easier for the "Run" keys/values):
(make sure BOINC is not running if/while you do changes)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup]
"ENABLELAUNCHATLOGON"="1" <-- change this to 0 (zero)

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Manager]
"DisableAutoStart"=dword:00000000 <-- change this to 1

Also check in these keys for entries that start boincmgr.exe
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

Check also the folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your-Windows-Username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Hello there

I have done what you said (Not to much knowledge of registry editing ,I tend to keep away from that sort of thing ,tech knowledge rather minimal)
However after making the necessary changes, BOINC it still autostarts.
checked both references to startup folders as you describe and there both empty.
Thanks for your continuing patience.

Do you have anything BOINC related in these keys? (especially for boincmgr.exe):
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

Did you make sure BOINC is not running while you do the changes to the registry?

(Before doing registry changes you can "Export..." (from RegEdit) the key tree to file (to have backup of values), there is No Undo in RegEdit)

Ah now I missed checking those last two lines you describe.
Its a new day here in good old UK and my battle of the BOINC resumes.
cheers Andy
PS I did make sure BOINC was shutdown before I made the relevant changes.
A.

update!
Checked those last two lines ,and no reference to BOINC in either

Did you already try Autoruns?:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

(No install needed, just unpack the .zip and run the .exe)

Do you by any chance use some additional software which auto-starts programs?

Like e.g. Startup Delayer:
http://www.r2.com.au/page/products/show/startdelay

(if you do - its auto-start actions will very probably Not be shown by any other program (like MSConfig, CCleaner, Autoruns))

Hello Bilbg
I think you may have solved my problem.
I didn't think I had set any other program to AS Boinc .I was wrong I have a program from I-OBIT called ADVANCED SYSTEM CARE.Amongst its many software tweakery optimising utilities I noticed START UP MANAGER ,I took a look and guess what? Boinc had been set auto-start ,I unselected it re-started my PC and not feeling optimistic (as you know I had tried everything) waited for the inevitable BOINC start ......3-4-5 minutes no start 10 no start.
I think that's it ,I will confirm tomorrow after a few more shutdown-restarts ,but I think the Battle of the BOINC could be over .
Thanks for all your help ,a fine bit of PC Sherlock Holmesery on your part.
cheers Andy
