The newspaper article on the Trieste forecast says that they have used an American algorithm, probably from California, and data from past earthquakes, which are available. But the struck zone was not considered a high risk zone, so the buildings were not antiseismic. About 30000 "forme" of Parmesan cheese are lost or heavily damaged.

Since you have Italy trying to burrow under Europe, you are going to get earth quakes.

Believe it or not Celt, Italy is actually on the northern most part of the African Continent and until recently no one knew this, go figure.

OH NO!! The earthquake in northern Italy has destroyed more than 300,000 wheels of cheese worth an estimated 250 million euros (£200m).

Pretty sure they did know. Porcupines are not a indiginous species of animal in Europe, but they are indiginous to southern Italy. And I have met some northern Italians who regard the population south of Firenza as africans.

Note to self, put parmigiano on shopping list before it doubles in price.

Yes, today, but before plate tectonics was ever dreamed of, I'm not so sure.

In any case Burbank CA just had a minor 2.6 Quake, 13 km depth.

Aftershocks seem to have stopped. Now is the long task of assessing damages, giving a shelter to people having lost their home and, above all, of restarting the factories and the agriculture. But the people there are strong, like the Friulani who rebuilt Friuli after the 1976 quake, far more destructive. This cannot be said of the Sicily and Irpinia quakes, where people waited for the State to intervene and much of the State and regional funds went in corruption and to enrich the local Mafia. I would affirm that we north Italians do not consider south Italians as Africans. Rather in the process of Italian unification in the XIX century the South was exploited by the North and remained a second rank Italy, as historians are now pointing out. For self defense, the South gave birth to Mafia, Camorra and 'Ndrangheta, respectively in Sicily, Naples and Calabria. This is now Italy's main problem. But the South has two great resources, tourism and the Sun. In 2011 25% of electricity in Italy was produced by renewable sources, mainly hydroelectric and photovoltaic.Enel, the state firm producing electric power is loudly complaining and trying to stop photovoltaic , hydroelectric is not increasing after the Vajont tragedy of 1963 (I was there as a rescue team volunteer, but there was nobody who could be rescued). My thanks to all who have expressed their sympathy. We shall not give up hope.

And once again, it could be felt all the way up here, as powerful or even more powerful than any local earthquakes we've ever had in the past twenty years - and we have many. There will probably me more aftershocks. It is strongly advised to stay clear of any damaged buildings if possible.
EDIT: Seems that this earthquake was even more damaging. Ten fatalities reported so far.

It is reported that Ferrari and Ductati have closed their factories for the day so personnel can be with their families.
