I live near Milano and was waken about 4.04 in the morning. The house was trembling.

Know how it feels, I was in Napoli in November 1980, when an earthquake struck near Balvano. Unforunately there was 3,000 deaths then. Hope the four deaths reported by the BBC doesn't get worse.

Good Luck.

There seems some discrepancy over the magnitude.

BBC News

USGS

There are aftershocks. On the USGS page I see 5 quakes so far.

I can see a 6, 5.1, 4.7, and a 4.5

There is also a 4.2 about 3 1/2 hours before the first 6 shock.

Yes. The count now is 6 dead, with 4 workers doing night shifts and a 103 years old woman. A 5 year old girl was saved when her father called the 113 emergency number from the USA.

It is a sad day for Italy. Yesterday a criminal act ended in killing one 16 years old girl in Brindisi and wounding several others. It might be a Mafia attack, but local Mafia members deny this, or a terrorist attack or simply a madman. Today we have more earthquake-related deaths.

The earthquake and the first aftershock both woke me up at Innsbruck, Austria, 270 kilometers north of the epicenter. The aftershock of 15:18 could also be felt here. Our national earthquake service said aftershocks may continue for weeks, with some of them potentially powerful enough to cause further damage.
My thoughts are with all the Italian people.

Bad times. Seem the quakes have all been relatively shallow, so damage is worse than could normally be expected.

Today, a seismologist from our national earthquake service said that aftershocks may continue for up to two months, with about 200 of them powerful enough to be felt throughout the Emilia-Romagna region. He said aftershocks of magnitude 5 or greater are unlikely, though. The main earthquake was reportedly felt in some of the higher buildings of Vienna, 530 kilometers northeast of the epicenter.

A strange coincidence: A joint civil defense exercise (forces from Austria, Germany, Switzerland) is currently ongoing in my region. It was planned for over two years; the scenario is a 6.3 magnitude earthquake shortly followed by a 6.2 in a neighbouring region on May 21st (today) in the early morning. The scenario is remarkably similar to the actual earthquake that happened yesterday.

Now I just hope the weather in the Emilia-Romagna region gets better soon. Disaster relief is always difficult, but bad weather can severely impact these efforts.

A study from Trieste University and International Center for Theoretical Physics in Miramare, done together with the Russian Academy of Sciences, had foreseen an earthquake in the Ferrara region from March to September 2012. It was presented to a Ministerial commission on May 4, then before the earthquake, but nothing could be done. What do you do if you foresee an earthquake? Nothing but to build antiseismic building, but that should have been done before. Both in Aquila and Ferrara regions old buildings crumbled, but also recent buildings, evidently badly built with low quality iron and concrete, for economy reasons.

The problem is that the predictions are either to vague (March to September? Can't evacuate an entire region for half a year) or on very short notice (animal behaviour). Such predictions are of very little use in evacuating or even just warning the population.
