The HD in my old C2D rig has been flaky for some time, but it was limping along OK until about a week ago. Then would hardly ever boot again. After about 15 tries tonight, I got it running long enough to copy the Boinc program and Boinc data folders to a USB thumb drive. I'm gonna try to load a new OS on a different HD and hopefully be able to reinsert the original folder data into the new Boinc installation and carry on. Wish me luck. my HDD failed earlier this week. I was able to get my bBOINC files but it appears some had become corrupted as the drive was failing. I got quite a few bad WU's. I blame the corruption but it may have also been from running without the proper drivers installed In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

I have tried to do a new XP installation on 2 used HDs, and it failed to format either. Starting to wonder if the mobo has finally gone south. I do have a brand new Seagate server drive that I shall try if another attempt fails. Sheesh. Poor gurl has only been crunching it's brains out for 5 years..... I opted for a quick NTFS format instead of the full one, and it took off. So, I am now rebooting to finalize install. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Good luck my friend. Hopefully you reach a resolution with as less pain as possible. Nothing worse than "stupid" problems without a good amount of hardware for backup. Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |

Uhh......if you do not have a driver for the Marvell internet thingy, how do you get one.......LOL. I must have a disc with one here. It was a humorous conunndrum.....(sp)....... How do you get there from here? "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

use nLite to add needed RAID/SATA/Network drivers to the XP Install CD image and burn yourself a new install CD. |

I had that happen on a Seagate drive the other day. I did it the long way and it failed. I did it again, the long way, and it failed. I told it to do a "quick" and I had a formatted usable drive in a couple of seconds. Then I checked the drive (the long way) and it checked-out fine. Weird. |

Marvell Yukon drivers are here: http://www.marvell.com/support/downloads/search.do Download it on a machine that works, put it on a flash drive or CD+RW (instead of wasting a whole CD-R, if you have an RW of course), then install that way. Yes, weird. The Seagate that I thought was trashed might turn out to be usable on another rig after all. And the other drive is a Maxtor, did the same thingy, so it's nothing to do with Seagate. The upgrade rig is now waiting for the Marvell drivers for me to proceed. But I might have to go over and do some yard work for Lori.....as she is unable herself, you see. Thanks in advance for the link, Cosmic. I know I have a mobo CD or two around her with it on too, or lurking in the temp file on one of my rigs. I just ran out of time and patience last night....LOL. And today it's too warm in here to run much other than the Frozen One. All other rigs are shut down and it's still 84f in the crunching den. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Hi Mark! Are you overclocking? If you are indeed doing so you probably risk breaking things even more. |

All other rigs are shut down and it's still 84f in the crunching den. Well, not exactly. I have but one window in the house that can accept an AC unit. I have the largest one I could get that will run on the 120v branch circuit in the garage. 14,700BTU... That equates to about 4,300 watts. My top 2 rigs can each draw about 950w when crunching shorties. The #2 rig has a refrigeration compressor cooling the CPU which draws around 500w. My #3 rig is at about 750w, my daily driver around 450w. That's 3600 watts for 4 rigs, leaving 700 watts for the other 5 rigs. Even assuming the AC would always run at peak efficiency, which drops as the ambient goes up, you can easily see why the AC cannot possibly cope with the heat output of the farm. In addition, the AC is at one end of the house, and the crunching den is at the other, so I have to use booster fans to get the cool air going one way and the hot air back to the AC. And obviously, I would be paying the electric bill to generate the heat, and just as much to run the AC to get rid of it. So, in a nutshell, I shall run what I can cooling with ambient air, and if temps outside go much over 85f, the rigs go down and the AC goes on to keep myself and the kitties in acceptable comfort. And with the money you are going to save keeping them off you'll be able to upgrade some of the rigs to the latest low-power high-speed "toys" instead of "ruining" the planet with more heat... LOL |

i say run some dryer ducting from the back of the computers to a exaust vent or something and add a fan that can pull enough air to not let the heat build at the computers .. so that it leaves the house like a real dryer does no need to cool the air just remove it from the aera can we see some pics of the computer setups then we can give some more sugestions |
