Below is a status update on GeorgeM and PaddyM courtesy of Matt and Eric in the Lab. _________________________________________________________ Georgem, attached to 24 drives in the 45 JBOD, is currently taking care of the following: 1. being the workunit storage server for the public project, as well as the workunit/result storage server for the beta project (thus replacing our old file server, gowron) 2. since the workunits are local, some BOINC backend processes are executed on georgem 3. various scientific processes are also running on georgem (thus replacing an old, flaky computer server, maul) 4. with the extra storage we keep various science database backups here as well (in a roundabout way replacing another old, flaky file server, worf) 5. we also hope to tune apache well enough to make georgem the eventual download server itself (thus replacing both vader and anakin) 6. and if #5 goes well we also hope to move the results for the public project onto georgem and make it also the upload server (thus replacing bruno) In short, georgem is handling a lot at the moment, already let us retire a couple servers, and soon a couple more. Paddym, attached to 21 drives in the 45 JBOD, is currently holding Kepler data which is in the (slow) process of being archived elsewhere. This should wrap up this week, and then the plan is to make paddym the main science database server, thus allowing oscar to be a compute server. The original plan was to make paddym the compute server and have oscar attach to the JBOD, but it turns out oscar was unable to see the JBOD (due to proprietary RAID card issues), hence this new plan, which we hope to start enacting next week. I have finished off the UPS fund raiser. Over to you guys to sort out the transport drives. That's great! Many thanks (I was beginning to think I was the only one that thought they needed those UPS devices.....) In addition to the transport drive fund, I noticed that we're only $73.53 short of $5k, so those that prefer PayPal vs. credit card for general purpose SETI donations can help achieve that milestone. Quick notes: 1. The last 2 HD transport cases are due to ship on 28 JUN 2012. These are the two cases donated by Speedbump and DiLLiGaS. 2. The 2 donated hard drives we provided to replace the dead Synergy drives were installed and are working according to plan. According to Matt:
3. We're still raising funds for our 20 transport hard drive fundraiser. Here's your chance to purchase a piece of hardware that will directly transport telescope data to the labs to be processed. You can donate either cash by visiting http://gpuug.org/content/setihome-green-bank-data-transport-package or you can donate a drive itself (which will reduce the cost of the original fundraiser) by visiting http://gpuug.org/content/cash-4-drive-2gb Thanks everyone. FYI Your link is not working http://gpuug.org/content/cash-4-drive-2gb As they are TB drives instead of GB. Power strips and UPS systems should all be delivered by Thursday this week. So far, 4 of the UPS systems have trickled into the office and 3 that I know of have been claimed by Jeff, Matt and Eric. Also the 2 direct donation HD transport cases have been shipped which wraps up our HD transport cases fundraisers en total. You can view the tracking information like always by visiting http://www.gpuug.org/purchases We've also sent off our SETI direct payments check this week which can be viewed at http://www.gpuug.org/payments Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |

Last two cases were delivered today. All 6 UPS systems and 5 power strips were delivered last week as well. I got a brief email back from Eric today which indicated the UPS systems and strips were being pressed into service. Trying to score some pics of the same. More soon. Brad, I saw this and I thought of you:) I think you may find-it-funny-in-a-not-so-funny-kinda-way. Seagate stalls and issues profit warning "At the heart of the problem is a quality issue in its enterprise disk drive unit which saw sales fall." You don't say... |

Brad, I saw this and I thought of you:) I think you may find-it-funny-in-a-not-so-funny-kinda-way. That makes a lot of sense to me. If you check Newegg or similar you'll see the reviews after the flooding are pretty rough. The good news is their RMA program is pretty solid. I hope they get their act together soonest. Maybe they shipped a bunch of drives that got wet and hoped that nobody would notice. |

We've been quite for a while in this thread as I'm having a bit of trouble getting word back from the guys at the lab on what they need for current and future projects. Hopefully I can get in touch with them soon so we can begin work on new projects. Thanks everyone. Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |

Slavac, thank you for the opportunity to help put some badly needed and upgraded capacity in the hands of the guys at Berkeley. I suppose they must not want (or don't feel they don't have time to integrate) any new equipment; especially with Matt working less on SETI@Home and concentrating more on music. That assumes that I understand correctly that Matt is chiefly if not totally responsible for hardware deployment. Hopefully the fellas are working feverishly at getting the Green Bank data (approaching a year old for the first of it, isn't it?) in some form we can work-on. If not, well, I think you've done just about everything a person can possibly do. Thanks again. |

Hopefully I can get in touch with them soon so we can begin work on new projects. More bandwidth from the lab to the internet. Please, please, please. Grant Darwin NT |
