Is this where Sea Shepherd is getting to be too successful against some highly profitable illegal plunder?

Captain Paul Watson Arrested In Frankfurt, Germany on Warrant Issued by Costa Rica

Update on the Arrest of Captain Watson: Day 2 in Custody

Urgent Call to Sea Shepherd Supporters - Help Save Captain Watson from Extradition to Costa Rica!

In shocking news, German officials have decided to proceed with the extradition of Captain Watson to Costa Rica. Our last hope of saving Captain Watson from extradition is to convince German officials at the Ministry of Justice to step in and overturn their decision. Show your support for Captain Watson by contacting Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, the Federal Minister of Justice in Berlin, Germany. Let her know that the warrant for Captain Watson's arrest is politically motivated and thus should be ignored by the German goverment. With international support we can set Captain Watson free, and keep him from the possibility of facing an unfair trial in Costa Rica.

Anti-whaling activist Paul Watson arrested for ramming boat 10 years ago

... Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was detained at Frankfurt airport on Sunday on an international warrant filed by Costa Rican authorities accusing him of a "violation of ships traffic" during an incident which occurred 10 years ago, while filming a documentary called Sharkwater. ...

... Charges against Mr Watson were examined by Costa Rican authorities and swiftly dropped, after videotape of the incident was aired. However the case was recently re-opened by new prosecutors...

That all looks to be very suspiciously corrupt after being cleared 10 years ago... Might this all have something to do with Sea Shepherd planning to vist there again this year to stop the senseless and cruel cutting off of shark fins, leaving the poor creatures to slowly die?

News spreads quickly, and there's some big guns gunning:

Paul Watson, anti-whaling campaigner, held in Germany over 2002 incident

Sea Shepherd founder and veteran environmentalist arrested on charges relating to Costa Rican shark-finning operation

... Watson's charges were subsequently dismissed when a video of the incident filmed by a documentary crew was shown to the Costa Rican prosecutor. However, ...

Japan unlikely to land Watson despite arrest in Germany

The arrest of Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson in Frankfurt on Sunday is unlikely to lead to his arrest by Japan for a combination of reasons...

... the government is unlikely to send investigators to Germany or Costa Rica because the allegations Japan has leveled against him are not serious...

Brigitte Bardot offers to take Sea Shepherd founder's place in prison

Brigitte Bardot, the actress and animal rights campaigner, has offered to take the place of the founder of the Sea Shepherd marine conservation group in prison.

And this drags on and does not look good... Have the corrupt Japanese and corrupt Costa Ricans trapped Sea Shepherd in Germany of all places for a few months of legal silliness, or worse...?

Sea Shepherd to protest Germany visit by Costa Rica’s Chinchilla

Jailed conservationist and Sea Shepherd President Paul Watson, to be released on bail Monday, will attend Wednesday’s protest in Berlin. Over the weekend, the Costa Rican government defended the decision to prosecute Watson.

German officials plan to extradite Sea Shepherd Capt. Paul Watson

... award-winning documentary Sharkwater. Stewart said at the time that the turnabout by authorities puzzled him, until he queried why "Underground Taiwanese fishing operations, which used private docks, were routinely ignored by Costa Rican authorities."

Stewart said once he discovered that "Taiwan invests millions of dollars every year in Costa Rica – building bridges, highways, and buildings, our arrests started to make sense." The director released footage today from from his documentary Sharkwater as video evidence to prove Watson’s innocence...

... Costa Rica is one of the world’s largest exporters of shark fins...

S.O.S. Day – Save Our Skipper – Wednesday May 23rd

... While we have won a victory with the decision to allow Captain Paul Watson out on bail, the battle to save his life must now intensify. The Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt has confirmed together with the General Public Prosecutor that the authority to save Captain Paul Watson’s life belongs to the Honorable German Minister of Justice. Continue to write, call, email, and fax the Honorable German Ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs...

... the shark fin mafia are capable of reaching inside the prisons of Costa Rica. If extradited to Costa Rica, it is unlikely Captain Paul Watson would live to see the inside of a Costa Rican courthouse. ...

We ask that Captain Paul Watson’s supporters continue to be respectful in their messaging. We are confident that with your help the President of Costa Rica, the German Chancellor, and Honorable Ministers of Germany will safeguard Captain Paul Watson’s human rights by not bowing to bogus accusations of shark fin poachers who are nothing more than common criminal.

So... Has all this fuss and disruption, stirring very many people, all been set in motion by just one corrupt bureaucrat in Japan? All very suspiciously so...

All a very clever ploy to inflict 3 months detention upon the leader of Sea Shepherd whilst the legal process rolls along?

Anti-whaling leader suspects Japan behind arrest

... "I find it very interesting that the extradition order was put out in October 2011 at exactly the same time that the Japanese brought civil charges against us in a Seattle court," Watson told Australia's Channel 7.

"You know, Japan is spending a lot of money to try and stop us intervening against their illegal whaling activities in the Southern Ocean, and I wouldn't be surprised if Japan was a part of this."

The Japanese Coast Guard said it has tried to "locate, identify or obtain information" on Watson through Interpol but would not comment on the case. ...

Watch Captain Watson’s Press Conference Outside Preungesheim Prison

After spending 8 days in the custody of German authorities... [Video interview]

Greetings From Germany

I would like to thank everyone around the world for the incredible support over the last week that I spent in a Frankfurt prison. It is greatly appreciated. The people of Sea Shepherd Germany have been wonderful and I have been happy to see so much support from supporters in Costa Rica and around the world also. ...

... Although I have no reason to believe that the Costa Rican legal system would not give me a fair trial, my concern is not for the judicial system, but for the reality that the shark fin mafia of Costa Rica has a price on my head and a Costa Rican prison would provide an excellent opportunity for someone to exercise this lethal contract against me. We have cost the shark finners a great deal of money over the last two decades and they want their revenge. ...

Our Voices for the Sharks in a Heartfelt Pledge of Cooperation on the May 23rd Day of Protest

... I have found since I have arrived in Germany that the German people are incredibly supportive from the judges to the prison guards, to the police, to the taxi drivers, to the people on the streets and in the shops. The German people are very conservation minded and they get it.

Our task is to convince the government of Germany that conservation is about being active about taking risks and that the environment must be put before politics. Therefore let us focus our energies on May 23rd towards politely appealing to German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger to drop this extradition demand.

In return I will make this promise – that I will initiate a cooperative relationship with Costa Rica to protect Cocos Island National Park and the sharks. Costa Rica will have my word on this and the entire world will be on notice that I have made this pledge.

I feel it is better to move forward positively than to waste so much time in conflict and dispute, when there is a real possibility here to create something positive and effective in addressing the real issue and that is the protection and conservation of the marine eco-systems of Costa Rica.

So please everyone – tomorrow, be polite yet firm in requesting that the extradition be dropped. Tomorrow is the opportunity to speak to the German government. The Minister has the power to drop this extradition demand.

All of you participating have my deepest appreciation for taking the time to speak on behalf of securing my freedom and especially thank you for your passionate concern for the defense of life in our oceans. ...

What a day!

Oh the Politics of it all:

Costa Rica promises shark activist a fair trial

The president of Costa Rica promised on Wednesday a fair trial in her country for a Canadian conservationist facing possible extradition over a campaign against shark finning, and tried to calm his fears of revenge attacks by Costa Rican shark fishers

All very highly suspicious for such a claim to have to be made...

The politics and corruption continues:

Sea Shepherd: The Law Takes Precedence Over Justice in Germany

... And 10 years later I found myself arrested in Germany because of this complaint.

Even more strange is that I had traveled extensively between October 2011 and the present, including trips to Europe and had not been arrested. That was because Interpol had dismissed the extradition warrant as being politically motivated. But for reasons unexplained...

... Costa Rica has 90 days to provide the file to the German authorities requesting extradition.

So I could be free to leave Germany in a few days, a few weeks or three months or if we lose the case then I would be forcefully extradited to Costa Rica OR if I lose the case, the German government can intervene politically to prevent the extradition.

All and all it seems like a great deal of effort to go to because a couple of shark finning fishermen who were not hurt nor had their property damaged had made a complaint. ...

Costa Rica Star: Can Paul Watson get a fair trial in Costa Rica?

... The President of Costa Rica has openly declared that activist Paul Watson will receive a fair trial for charges stemming from a decade-past ship collision with a fishing boat that was engaged in criminal activities in Guatemalan waters. President Chinchilla’s assessment of this situation seems somewhat dubious in light of both past and recent events. Suspicions of undue international or criminal interference in Costa Rica’s judicial process...

Paul Watson's not got much to worry about if he's extradited to Costa Rica.
The Costa Ricans are just trying to flex their very-very small muscles here.
It would not be in their interest to see a miscarriage of justice carried
out against Watson if tried in their country.

I'm convinced some 'accident' would mean he never left prison alive. We're rather blase in our own country as compared to the obvious corruption in Costa Rica... For this case, there even may well be connections with the Japanese and Chinese mafias to settle a common thorny score... (The Japanese have already shot Paul Watson once in an assassination attempt. A Japanese whaling captain also murderously rammed a Sea Shepherd boat, smashing it in two to ultimately sink.)

Just one example, and that is what has sneaked out to be publicised:

Diplomatic Relations Between China and Costa Rica, Five Years Later

... caught unloading 20,000 kilos of blue shark at a commercial dock in the Port of Puntarenas...

... There are also mentions of a Taiwanese shark-finning mafia operating in our oceans and our prison system, purportedly awaiting the extradition of environmental activist Paul Watson. The founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is concerned that a powerful organized crime network from Taiwan could settle a score against him in Costa Rica. ...

And do you think times have changed from over a decade ago when the illegal trade has increased to possibly include Chinese billionaires?...

Paul Watson: ‘There’s a price on my head’

... How do you feel that 10 years later all of this is resurfacing?

The whole thing is very confusing to me. If we go back 10 years, in fact if we go back 11 years, to 2001, we assisted the rangers at Cocos Island [a national park 365 miles west of the Pacific port of Puntarenas] in arresting the Ecuadorian longliner The San José. That was the first vessel to be confiscated by the Costa Rican courts for poaching in Cocos Island. So as a result of that, we were invited by Costa Rica to work in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment and with the Cocos Island rangers. ...

... we came across a Costa Rican vessel that was shark finning in Guatemalan waters...

...They said, “We can hold you for a year while we investigate the allegations of these fishermen.” And I wasn’t about to go into a jail in Costa Rica for a year. So, we went to Panama, and I never heard anything more from it since. ...

So, Paul Watson is under arrest for up to three months, all on twice-dismissed charges. Similarly, the Costa Rican system is that he could be held for a year on frivolous claims, if he were ever to escape that alive...

In contrast to such corruption, all we have is:

You don't have die to be a martyr.

a person who undergoes severe or constant suffering: a martyr to severe headaches. I would say he is a martyr the intricate, albeit stupid convolutions of politics. If anything it will hopefully bring the kind of attention to what is happening and question the legality of acting on something that was previously considered resolved a decade ago. The German frivolous imprisonment of Captain Paul Watson continues:

"Sea Shepherd" Captain Paul Watson Interview: Waiting on German Justice and a Note From Martin Sheen

... The organization he founded, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS), has achieved unprecedented success in saving whales, seals, sharks, tuna, and dolphins from illegal poaching and outright slaughter. In so doing Watson and his team have had so much success disrupting Japanese whaling operations in the Antarctic Ocean that it is no longer a profitable enterprise...

... so, it is far from surprising that he is being targeted by some government authorities, especially Japan and the black market seafood industry. According to Peter Hammarstedt, Ship Operations Officer for Sea Shepherds, illegal shark fin poaching is the third largest black market enterprise in the world after drugs and weapons trafficking...

... It would seem Germany, which does not have an extradition treaty with Costa Rica, but arrested Watson nonetheless, has been drawn into the affair for motives which remain unknown. ...

Ian Somerhalder Asks for Support of Sea Shepherd’s Paul Watson

... The actor and U.N. Goodwill Ambassador tweeted to his more than 2 million followers, “Had great meeting w/Cap Paul Watson of @SeaShepherd -I adore this man&his org.He needs some help&I need you guys to help me-No $ just tweets.” ...

... Somerhalder isn’t the only celeb to speak out in Watson’s defense. The Red Hot Chili Peppers and champion surfer Kelly Slater have called for his immediate release, and Alicia Silverstone sent out an urgent call for support on her blog The Kind Life. Long-time friend of Watson and Sea Shepherd supporter Brigitte Bardot even offered to take his place in prison.

On World Ocean's Day, June 8, the M/Y Brigitte Bardot and M/Y Bob Barker sailed into Sydney Harbor, receiving a hero's welcome. The two vessels are triumphant after the hugely successful Operation Divine Wind Campaign in the Southern Ocean, where Sea Shepherd ships prevented the illegal slaughter of 768 whales from the Japanese whaling fleet.

STILL incarcerated in Germany...

The Party is Getting Old in Panama

I have an excuse for not attending the current meeting of the International Whaling Commission. Germany is not allowing me to leave their wonderful nation because Costa Rica wants me extradited for the horrendous “crime” of saving sharks a decade ago.

I don’t think I will be missing much other than the satisfaction of terrifying the Japanese delegates who tend to grow frightfully pale when they see me at this annual feud between whale huggers and whale killers.

I do grow weary of the annual charade now playing out in Panama. Once again...

... The International Whaling Commission is a complete and utter farce, a joke and an embarrassment to humanity.

The meeting opened up with gorgeous visuals of beautiful Humpbacks as everyone smiled and applauded, except for the Japanese delegates who do not seem to see beauty in the whales unless they have been butchered and served on a platter with rice and a flask of sake.

Japan and her bought-and-paid-for puppets are so hostile to the world’s whale populations that they prevented the creation of the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary in an area where no one kills whales.

Why?

[...]

... For those who are truly interested in defending the whales I urge you to back our ships and our courageous crew of passionate volunteers. Help us block the killers where they kill, in the remote waters of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, on the beaches of the Faeroe Islands, in the North Atlantic and every other place where the hot blood of the whales and the dolphins flows freely into sea because of the murderous nature of our fellow humans.

Once again our ships will return to the Southern Ocean in December and once again we will speak the one language that the whalers understand – money.

Once again we will negate their blood profits as we drive them ever further into debt.

We intend to sink the Japanese whalers economically and we intend to save the lives of as many whales as we possibly can.

Sea Shepherd volunteers do not do meetings very well. We tend to get in the face of the whalers with action not words.

Operation Zero Tolerance coming soon to a Whale Sanctuary not near you.
“Save the Whales” is not a slogan to us; it’s a promise and a commitment.

All for our only planet,
Martin

In my opinion, this farce just simply SCREAMS corruption and abuse for the sake of revenge by the Japanese whalers... The most surprising part for what I see in all this is the apparent corrupt complicity of Germany! Judge for yourselves:

Sea Shepherd founder says Japan after revenge

Fugitive Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson on Tuesday accused Japan of conspiring with Germany and Costa Rica to hunt him down in revenge for his attacks on its whaling operations.

In his first comments since jumping bail and fleeing Germany, where he had been under house arrest for two months, the militant environmentalist said he felt betrayed by Berlin because it had negotiated with Tokyo to extradite him.

Watson, who for years has harassed Japan's annual whale hunt off Antarctica, was arrested in Germany in May for extradition to Costa Rica over a high-seas confrontation over shark finning in 2002.

Last week Japan confirmed it asked Berlin to extradite Watson...

Sea Shepherd’s Paul Watson speaks on skipping bail: ‘I eluded them once again’

A week after fleeing house arrest in Frankfurt, eco-saboteur Paul Watson released a letter Monday claiming charges against him were influenced by the shark and whale poaching industries he has interfered with for decades.

The 61-year-old Canadian is wanted by both Costa Rica and Japan...

... The veteran activist pledged to continue his efforts to sabotage poaching of marine life, announcing a new campaign in Japan, which is set to launch in December.

“I can serve my clients better at sea than in a Japanese jail cell and I intend to do just that.”

Captain Paul Watson Sends First Message To Supporters Since Departing Germany

... Germany however, a country without an extradition treaty with Costa Rica or Japan, decided to apprehend me on what they described was a bilateral agreement...

...With Costa Rica, I had the evidence on film and with two dozen witnesses I was confident that I could win the case against the allegations of the shark finners. My only concern was that Costa Rica would then hand me over to Japan. For with Japan, there is the absolute certainty that once in Japanese custody, I will never be released. ...

... I find it absurd that in all the years I have been campaigning for the protection and conservation of marine life, where I have not caused a single injury to a single person and have only interfered with illegal operations as defined by international conservation law, that Japan can make accusations against me after destroying a two-million-dollar vessel [and not even allowing their captain to be questioned], injuring a crewmember and almost killing five others.

I am very disappointed with the German government. For me it is obvious that the German government conspired with Japan and Costa Rica to detain me...

... According to the Costa Rican government they met the deadline set by the German authorities to submit an application, which expires today. [1st August]

Japan seeking revenge: Paul Watson

Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson has accused Japan of hunting him down in revenge for his attacks on its whaling operations...

... "This is not about justice; it is about revenge."...

It's a shame the Sea Shepherd is out of action.

We could really use her in Australian waters atm

Super Trawler to fish Australian Waters

Funny thing the Australian government is winding back the local fishing industry yet allows a foreign ship in with an 18,000 tonne quota.

In brief: An amazing story, and all the more amazing for the involvement of Germany. Is there still a secret pact between Germany and Japan from World War II? For my view, the circumstances are unbelievable unless there is instead more recent to WWII, and more simply, some blatant corruption going on.
