first, sorry if i couldn't come up with a better title.
i tried looking around and couldn't find an exact answer.. sorry if i overlooked it.

anyway, i recently built a system with a specific setup for seti.
asus m5a97 mobo. amd phenom2 4core 960T. 8gb ddr3 (going to get another 8 later)
i hear all over the place i can unlock the other 2 cores in the cpu, and every time i enable the feature in the asus bios and restart, it gives me a splash that says basic info, and at the bottom "your cpu cannot run like this" or something or other.. so i may just o/c it.
anyone know something i don't?
also, i found out the long way that i couldn't use nvidia graphics drivers for my card until i disabled the epu thing. these bios are kinda messy, imo.

biggest issue atm.. i have the boink preferences to use 50% of my cores and 50% time. (which is why i wanted to unlock the other 2 so i can run 3, 24/7, with enough cpu to do my regular)
my pcu is throttling all over the place from 1 to 50..

BOINC will use whatever the OS reports. I see that BOINC is reporting 4 CPUs.

yeah.. i was wondering if the throttling is normal.. and was hoping someone might know a way to unlock those 2 other cores.

... with enough cpu to do my regular ...

What do you mean by this?
Set to 100% of cores and 100% CPU time and you will see everything "regular" runs at the normal speed
(check by any benchmark while SETI is running or "by feel" using any "regular" program)
SETI apps are running at lowest possible priority so don't have any effect (do not cause slowdown).

my pcu is throttling all over the place from 1 to 50..

That is normal (by your preference "50% CPU time") - SETI runs 1 second, pause 1 second, ...

i do a huge amount of things with my home pc.. at any given time (under load), i could have 2 cores running at max capacity and the other 2 at 75% (including seti & everything else) and capped at around 6gb ram

You are aware that modern OSes have a scheduling priority for CPUs and it isn't as simple as "if SETI is using 75% of my CPU, all that's left for me and my programs is 25%", right?

BOINC launches science apps at the lowest priority allowed by the OS while most user applications are run at a higher priority. So if SETI is using 100% of your CPU and is set to low priority, and you ran an application that wants 35% running at normal priority, the OS will automatically take away that 35% from the lower priority app and give it to your higher priority app.

I leave BOINC to use all of my CPUs and I'm a gamer. I have no issues running a game that wants all of one core and half of another to run while SETI@Home gets the rest - and it's all handled automatically by the OS in the background.

(edited for content due to my ADD)

ok, so the throttling thing was a misunderstanding on my part. but i would greatly appreciate any advice, help, or thoughts as to unlocking the other 2 cores in my cpu. primarily for work i'm a programmer, and random cpu slowdowns is a little annoying to say the least.. especially when trying to compile and send an 11gb packet back to the company server (lol)

i do have seti set to use 50% cores, 100% time, regardless of pc usage.

that should provide you with 2 cores to do the other work, 2 on SETI.
There may be some slowdown due to memory usage when compiling, and if so you might want to right click the boinc icon, and select "snooze" which I believe will suspend all boinc processing for approx 2 hours.

For most other uses people can suspend while in use, but if you are leaning back while the computer compiles, that might not be the safest bet.

or just have boinc not run work while the PC is in use. That should eliminate any lag you may have had due to BOINC

i was just thinking having the extra 2 cores with a couple seti's running constant would be most effective. i can vary in work schedule very quickly. say 36 hours spent in 2 days, 8 hours the next day, an all nighter the next night for a 16 hour session crammed down to 10-12 to make a 9am deadline 48 hours ahead of schedule (nice bonus :)), and get a 5 day weekend which i might only spend half at home, or spend half gaming, whatever.
(sorry, ADD)
i'll poke around with ASUS and AMD and see what i can't come up with.
thanks for the help.

for the use you describe.. I might suggest setting it to suspend on use (giving you ALL of it when you need it) And have it resume after 30-60 minutes keyboard inactive. That should give you plenty of oomph, hopefully enough time to compile what you are compiling, and when not in use run all out.
