Ah yes, Gary in sarcasm mode. One way to increase the proportion of folks paying taxes -- pay living wages to workers among the 47%. Note of course that a fair sized piece of 'the 47%' are retirees living on modest pensions and social security and thus not paying *income* taxes.

Why yes, I believe we had an example in another thread about the minimum wage in Australia. Ask yourself about the immigration policies of the USA if they were to adopt that amount.

Well, I know I wouldn't have learned a bunch of new cuss words in Spanish if he was Prez. What a blue streak as the workers opened their first paychecks of the year and saw the 'bama SS tax hike.

Yea, that'd really help the situation. More divide and conquer tactics to keep pushing an agenda that's not reflective of the majority.

This I'm not familiar with. News reports here said that the tax hikes were due to the impasse in Congress. I thought that after Congress had resolved "The Fiscal Cliff" that only those earning over $250k had their tax rates increased.

By saying "'bama SS tax hike" I presume that the Social Security payment also went up. How much was "the hike", $10, $20, $50, $100 ? What salary range are you referring to ?

Not Picking, I'm honestly curious.

and if you read what I said those districts in blue are typically densely populated areas.

Saying there is more red is disingenuous at best considering the low population in rural areas.

here's a more telling pic

the country isn't so red when you actually look at how closely Conservative victories are across the country. While they may win they are not overwhelming victories. Except in rural districts as I previously noted

And there in lies the only reason Republicans hold any seats... Add a pinch of strategic re-districting and voila!

How many PEOPLE are red, how many are blue?

Thanks Skil, I haven't had the time to answer Dull, who responded to my statement about the populous with something referring to land area.

Republicans rejoice! You have far more square footage than any other political affiliation. We need trees and farms, so thank you.

(I'll quietly await a clever "roses are red" political poem from Mr Ignore)

Anyway, I'm pretty sure gerrymandering is not just a red or blue thing.

no but it seems that here in Texas and other Conservative held states the Repugnicans make the gerrymandering an art form. needless to say, Texas has to put their redistricting maps up for Federal court review because of the constant and consistent Republican ploys to eliminate Democrat districts and/or disenfranchising voters that wouldn't vote for a conservative.

/edit
this all came about because of previous and continuing civil rights violations

The state you really should look at is Florida if you want to study gerrymandering.

In that state half a million more people voted for the Democrats than for the Republicans but the GOP won 55% of the House seats.
