What's a year or two.....

Quite a lot actually when you have a totally different party and Prime minister in power!

So you believe that politicians can be trusted then......

Of course they can. They can be trusted to accept bribes, have slush funds, lie, cheat and steal, they can also be trusted to issue bribes to prosecutors, judges and juries, arrange intimidation of whistle blowers ...

Whilst Britain continues to stand by it's word over any agreements made between
it and the USA then there will always be a Special Relationship. Especially
since it was pointed out by an American diplomat, shortly after Obama took office,
"The UK is the only country you can trust to keep to any agreements made with
us, and President Obama has "Now" been told this".
What does the UK gain from this Special Relationship, the same as America does,
a secure and hopefully never ending trusted friendship/relationship. Sometimes
one may have to give more to the friendship than the other one does but in the
end it will always balance itself out.

Australia also supposedly has a "Special Relationship" with the U.S. and I'd like to know what we get out of it.

Like the UK we fight their wars, host their troops (2,500 Marines are to be stationed near Darwin) and spy bases (at least 3) and provide logistic support for the US Navy and Air Force. The US tells our government (of any party) what to do and it tugs its forelock and says "Yes Massa".

Yet when Oz signed the "Free Trade Agreement" with the US, we were screwed. The US got open access to all our markets but the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (which provided affordable drugs for all) was destroyed so the US drug companies could make more money. Agricultural products, our main export to the US, were specifically excluded and American companies were relieved of the requirement follow our foreign investment procedures. As a result result a number of big Australian companies are now US owned.

If there are any benefits in our "Special Relationship", they are reserved for a select few and delivered in brown paper bags.

Actually the "special relationship" with China is located about 2,500kM North of Perth (Thats where the iron ore mines are) :-)

(BTW, be careful how you phrase things like, "we fight their wars." It would be more appropriate to say, "we joined their coalitions in small numbers like many other countries to help where we could fighting tyranny and injustices throughout the world caused by evil regimes and dictators.")

Naah not only iron, the Chinese are buying us out quicker than the Yanks are (afterall, they have a lot more money). They own coal mines, agricultural land, copper, aluminium and a lot of other resources as well. But at least they pay full price.

FIIK why our political classes are so willing to sell off the farm (brown paper bags is a big possibility). Aussies are becoming tenants in their own country.

It has been reported at times in various quarters that there is suspicion
regarding China's rush to buy-up so many different mining industries. It has
been muted that China has intention of controlling the price of various
different raw materials once they control enough mines. Only time can tell
if this is true, if so then the Specials Relationship is going to get even
more special.

I understand the two end languages in the world -- Spanglish and Changlish

My take on it is that the relationship is based on the investment in the same historical narrative, the success of the British Empire’s influence in the development of today’s global world . If you look at the US, and the remaining Anglo centric commonwealth nations such as Canada and Australia you will find that the average citizin from each of these countries share a very similar historical viewpoint based on shared investment in cultural, religious, political, economic, and philosophical models (namely Anglo, Protestant/reformist, representative democracies, free market capitalism/globalization and Rationalism/Empiricism.) Further all of these perspectives were either born or adopted and further developed within these nations, as opposed to being imposed upon them from external forces. So the language spoken between them, has far more dimensions than the spoken one. Agreements will be kept well among them because they understand each other to begin with and have a vested interest in keeping the historical narrative as it is, and the desire to development its extension to similar ends.
