I have one machine with poor performance compared to the rest. only 6100 rac. why is this when it has a q6600 and nvidia gtx 460? |

Are you using standard apps or Lunatics? Are you running 2 WUs on the GTX460? I have a machine with 2 GTX 460s (2 WUs per card) and a quad core phenom, and it is getting around 30K RAC using Lunatics(almost all on the GTXs, of course). So, yes, sounds like you are low. |

I used the lunatics installer 4.0 to set up seti , just as my other machines.............Paul |

Your recent completed Cuda tasks are taking 10 times longer than earlier tasks, and it probably doesn't help that you're running 296.xx drivers with it's Sleeping Monitor Bug, Claggy |

Hi Claggy, can you determine why this may be? Using the installer gave no indication of why this is? |

Hi Claggy, can you determine why this may be? Using the installer gave no indication of why this is? Given the large number of combinations, it's not possible for the installer to diagnose all possible problems. You should go to www.nvidia.com and download the latest video driver for your card/OS/processor (probably 301.24 or so). Then stop BOINC, install the driver, and restart BOINC/seti. ...and as has been said elsewhere tonight, never let Windows Update update your drivers... |

Hi Claggy, can you determine why this may be? Using the installer gave no indication of why this is? All i can think of is that the GPU has downclocked, looking at the stderr.txt from different Wu's show different starting clocks, perhaps it downclocks after that because it can't handle the higher clockrate: setiathome_CUDA: Found 1 CUDA device(s): Device 1: GeForce GTX 460, 1023 MiB, regsPerBlock 32768 computeCap 2.1, multiProcs 7 clockRate = 1424000 In cudaAcc_initializeDevice(): Boinc passed DevPref 1 setiathome_CUDA: Found 1 CUDA device(s): Device 1: GeForce GTX 460, 1023 MiB, regsPerBlock 32768 computeCap 2.1, multiProcs 7 clockRate = 1666000 In cudaAcc_initializeDevice(): Boinc passed DevPref 1 setiathome_CUDA: Found 1 CUDA device(s): Device 1: GeForce GTX 460, 1023 MiB, regsPerBlock 32768 computeCap 2.1, multiProcs 7 clockRate = 1350000 In cudaAcc_initializeDevice(): Boinc passed DevPref 1 Try rebooting and see if times speedup again, then try running the stock clock if wu's start taking two hours again, i haven't seen any sign of the sleeping monitor bug on that host. I think I have a handle on it now . Lets wait and see what happens over the next hours............Paul |

I guess I am still fighting with this machine, gpu working good it seems , cpu working good also. no great results however. RAC STILL in the 6500 range . upgraded to nvidias beta and latest boinc 7.xxx . Any ideas fellows? |

If you have GPUZ installed on the machine, how much activity is shown for the GPU ? It should be around 90%. If you don't have GPUZ you can download it HERE You have a number of problems. It appears that the CPU is downclocked to 2GHz rather than the standard 2.4. Have you altered the CPU multiplier ? Secondly, for a 6600 you should be using the SSS3 version of the Lunatics CPU app not the SS3. You may have a problem with your BIOS settings. I'd check them out before playing anymore with drivers and apps. It almost looks like the GPU is not being used and all work is being done on the CPU. Open Task Manager and check your CPU usage (should be 100% on all 4 cores) and under the Processes Tab check the memory usage of the 4 akV8 processes and the Lunatics app. It should be around 36MB for the ak's and 80 to 100MB for the Lunatics. Also in the Processes tab the CPU usage should be around 25% for each AK (ie one on each core) and once loaded around 2% for the x41 GPU app. Let us know what you find. T.A. |

And just in case you are not aware, RAC is calculated by a rather involved process and can take a month or more to stabilise. A fix for this problem will not show an instant rise but a slow increase. At this stage you need to keep an eye on your actual crunching times. T.A. |

I did the steps you said and am now running gpu-z to keep track of gpu usage and I set the clock to a stock speed on the CPU side . Shows good so far but I thought so before . I will keep you informed and I thank you very much for your time and energy.............Paul |

it looks like drivers go a long way; my core 2 extreme x9000 2.8ghz with geforce 8800 GTX 512MB is doing a measly 3,100 RAC, while Paul's core 2 quad 2.4 ghz with the 767MB 8800 GTX is doing 12,000 RAC. Obviously, he has 2 more CPU cores but i dont think that the CPU's are doing most of the legwork. As discussed in a previous post I made a month ago, I am unable to upgrade my 8800 GTX drivers beyond the ancient 186.3 drivers because it causes my alienware to blue screen (not just mine, it's a problem all people who bought an alienware m15x in 2008 (pre-dell-takeover) are having). I am only able to use CUDA 2.2 drivers for my GTX since i'm stuck with the old geforce drivers. So basically i would conclude that having the newest drivers for your GPU is going to help increase your RAC. if you look at my RAC on that system you will probably feel a bit better about your own RAC. :) I know that you weren't complaining about your 8800 GTX system but when I looked at your computers, I just figured I'd make that comment.. |
