Hi hope somebody can help!
I've been able to crunch on my gpu until recently when i updated the boinc manager. Now im only getting cpu jobs. i've checked the preferences and its all checked to allow gpu work. When i check the event log it shows it asking for gpu work but not actually getting any. Any ideas?

Thanks

If "the event log shows it asking for GPU work" just wait.
BOINC will ask again in 5 minutes.

Depending on your "luck" you may get task for the GPU after 5 minutes or an hour.
Since there is no difference between "CPU task" and "GPU task" if the server have tasks "on hand" (100 tasks every 2 seconds) it will label them "for your GPU" and send.

It just happens that your (anybody's) BOINC asks for work in the last "part" of those 2 seconds and these 100 tasks are already given to others.
After less that a second server again have tasks "on hand".

Hi thanks for your reply. Yeah i thought that at first but its been about a week now and still no gpu work. On my other pc running the older boinc manager its getting gpu work, wished i'd ignored the boinc messages to update manager as it was fine. Maybe its worth going back the previous version if possible? cheers again

Message 1227737 - Posted: 5 May 2012, 9:59:22 UTC - in response to Message 1227708.

Why is the server not sending GPU tasks, because no tasks are available or because of lack of GPU memory?

As for going back to 6.x: Set No New Tasks and finish your current ones (don't forget to report them) then stop BOINC completely. After deleting client_state.xml and client_state_prev.xml from your BOINC data directory you can install the older version on top of 7.0.25.

BTW, 7.0.25 is old (though still recommended), currently 7.0.27 is up to date.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Well like i said didnt think it would be because of the gpu memory as it was fine before. Here what it reports if helps

It appears the drivers are forcing the PC to use some of the GPU RAM

05/05/2012 17:18:33 | | NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 8400 GS (driver version 296.10, CUDA version 4.20, compute capability 1.1, 256MB, 198MB available, 44 GFLOPS peak)
05/05/2012 17:18:33 | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 8400 GS (driver version 296.10, device version OpenCL 1.0 CUDA, 256MB, 198MB available)

You will most likely need to back off to an older driver version to get your GPU's running. I'm sure CUDA user will be along to explain better than I could

Cheers Skildude for ur reply,
So you think downloading an older driver for my gpu might work then. If know one else can think of anything will try that.

Thanks!

IIRC you'll need something before the 275.XX version. I'm not an nVidia guy so you might need to search the Numbers Crunching forum for details

From reading the forums: good old drivers to use/try are: 190.38 , 191.x , 266.58

For GeForce 8400 GS you don't need any newer driver than 266.58 unless there is specific fix for a game you play or some other issue you have.
(for this info (what is fixed/added/broken) read the "Release notes" of any driver).

Some info in these posts:
(as always: use the link second time if the first click do not go to the needed post)

Hi again BILBg,

Just before you replied i uninstalled boinc and went back to the the previous version and its fine again. Gpu crunching fine! I read up on the 7 something version and does say people might experience problems with gpu depending on how its installed or somethnig so im just gonna stick with this one, doesnt seem to be much of a difference between them.
First time i'd wrote anything on these forums so thanks again everyone who posted!
