Ok, so the working 7.0.27 will for now be available in Ubuntu through "Locutus'" PPA repository, since we're done testing, and just waiting for the standard repository to be fixed. I recommend Ubuntu users remove any manually installed boinc packages they have. Also, if do "sudo apt-get autoremove" if you have no manually installed packages. To install a working Boinc 7.0.27: Ubuntu 12.04 users can do (in a terminal): sudo apt-get install python-software-properties sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costamagnagianfranco/boinc sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install boinc That's it. Boinc 7.0.27 is installed and should be working, with Nvidia improvements vs 7.0.24. You should be able to find it by typing "boinc-manager" into unity's search. or through other methods I won't be covering here. #resist |

I installed .27 per instructions here. I am still getting fails but the time they came was 9 May at 15:53 so I will wait for new downloads of work and see what happens. Thank YOU for all your effort. |

I encountered the bug and was quite unhappy with it and the software updater bug. I gave up on Ubuntu/Kubuntu and moved on over to OpenSUSE Which SuSE version are you using? I am still using BOINC 6.10.58 on my SuSE 11.1 since when I tried 6.12.34 it would not even start. I have downloaded SuSE 12.1 but I haven't installed it yet. Tullio |

I think its 11.1 I'm using the Boinc files from openSUSE. just use the console su and cd to /usr/bin/ then ./boincmgr and it starts right up In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

10 May 15:28 work just failed too Did you fully remove your previous boinc, do an auto-remove, and then add the PPA, update and then install? If not try again. try to notice the version# as it installs make sure it says:"7.0.27+dfsg-0~827~precise1" If it does still, let me know, I'll dump mine and reinstall to see if I can reproduce what's happening. I won't be able to do this for about 10-12 hours from now. Also, I am curious to be SURE you are having the same bug. The bug that this ppa package solves is the INSTANT erroring of all s@h workunits in boinc when they try to run. If in your case the work units actually process in Boinc, than you are having a different issue. EDIT] Crap, They started testing other versions in that PPA!! it was supposed to be the location of the working 7.0.27 Ill update with some info when I get a PPA that has the "good" version. Sorry about this, but it's those guys doing it not me. :-) (I really am going to have to make my own PPA, <grumbles>) #resist |

It has just started working. Thanks for the work you did solving the problem. |

I didn't solve anything. I worked with the Ubuntu/Debian package managers to help figure out the problem. I did this because it was an issue that affected more than one thing I care about. (Ubuntu/Linux, AND Boinc/seti@home) And it's not "solved" in my eyes until the fix is in the standard Ubuntu etc. repository. There's still more "fiddling" to do with some things. I'm still testing packages. I'm glad you have it running on your Ubuntu. Eventually you'll be able to remove the PPA from your system and go with the standard package. Best wishes to all for now. #resist |

The PPA link in my previous message should be stable for now. It currently points to a working 7.0.27, and should only be changed for version changes in the future. This PPA will currently work with Ubuntu 11.10(Oneiric Ocelot), 12.04(Precise Pangolin), and 12.10(Quantal Quetzal). Any bugs experienced with "7.0.27+dfsg-0~829~" with Ubuntu should be brought up here in "Q+A" or in "Crunching: Boinc 7.0.27 development". This package does not have the bug that outright prevents Boinc from crunching S@H, but I am sure like anything some people will get stuck with something. This PPA may just be a better choice than relying on the repository packages, as the PPA will get updates. Again, the PPA website is here. And you can see my previous message for a quick how-to-add a PPA, and get your boinc updated. Note, if you have a broken boinc installed, please do a "sudo apt-get remove boinc" before you do the other commands listed above. #resist |

OK. I did this and I'm up and running with 7.0.27 but now I get the error: error while loading shared libraries: libboinc_api.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I have in /usr/lib libboinc_api.so, libboinc_api.so.7 and libboinc_api.7.0.27 the former two are links to the latter. I suppose I can try to create the link and see what happens? This was reported in another post in this forum and the person was told this was an alpha release. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit if that's relevant. Don't have an issue with the other projects I am attached to. |

OK. I did this and I'm up and running with 7.0.27 but now I get the error: 7.0.27 is currently beta I believe. And I really don't even know what to tell you about this issue, except normally I see messages like this when there are missing dependencies. But considering these are specifically named *boinc* then it's safe to say the dependencies should be getting installed with boinc. I'd say if you can get the lib file that's missing just throw it in the folder there? I haven't had this issue, and I've installed this package several times on more than one machine for testing purposes. but I also don't run a GPU so not sure if that's related. I hope someone else has some ideas on this one. See this thread. This guy had an almost identical issue. It seems everyone, even me, ends up with missing lib* files here and there. I usually cheat and use apt-get to install something else that uses the same files and just removing the unneeded package without its dependencies. . But in this situation I don't know.. #resist |

Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) does not need the PPA fix, as the working 7.0.27 is now in Quantal's repository. :-) (Thanks to Steffen, "Locutus", and Thomas at Launchpad and Debian) Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise) will have the working package backported into its repository very soon. I'll update when it's in place. Finally. The beginning of a victory. :-) #resist |

Installed Lubuntu earlier in the week. Can't get BOINC working properly. Just noticed my other Ubuntu 12.04 box has not been working since April 28, the day I updated it. Anyway we can fix these issues? I've been living with this since I started using Linux about 6-8 years ago. I jumped aboard SETI way back in 1999. |

There's some hold-up getting the 7.0.27 package backported into 12.04, there was a different bug found, (I haven't had an issue)... There is the ppa repository, however that was just changed to 7.0.28, and I have not tested it yet so who knows what will or wont work. It should not have the "computation error" bug however as the 12.04 repository package currently does. If you want to try the package from the ppa repository, (currently 7.0.28) do (in a terminal): sudo apt-get remove boinc sudo apt-get install python-software-properties sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costamagnagianfranco/boinc sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install boinc This will add the active ppa repository to your system and install boinc from it. This version gets changed regularly however, so you are more likely to run into problems using this repository, however for now at least you can have something that should work, vs. something that doesn't. As I mentioned Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal) has a fix in it's repository, but there is some holdup getting that package into 12.04 as 12.04 is a long term support release and they want to make sure once the package is replaced, it will be a version that can be relied on for some time... #resist |

Other boinc projects seem to work OK. I got Cosmology with CAMB 2.16 going flawlessly, this might be a SETI issue. |

Yes flite, this issue with the Ubuntu/Debian Boinc is limited to Seti@home and perhaps one or two other projects only. And glad to hear the 7.0.28 is working, I'll be upgrading to it in a few days to try it out as well. Debian/Ubuntu Boinc is fixed for versions 7.0.27+, that's the good news :-) Just the issue of this broken 7.0.24 that's still in the 12.04 repository. #resist |

So I get errors still: <core_client_version>7.0.28</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> process exited with code 127 (0x7f, -129) </message> <stderr_txt> ../../projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setiathome_enhanced: error while loading shared libraries: libboinc_api.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory </stderr_txt> ]]> |

Missing lib file... I think this is the bug holding everything up (with the repository package fix). I'm trying something now, going to test this 7.0.28 ppa, on a clean 12.04 install that hasn't had boinc and see if we can't fix it for you. (I think the reason I didn't run into this error is because I have all the lib files in place from various testing I've been doing) I'll report back and update instructions when I know more. I'd really like to add, as a side note: Installing the package from Berkeley's website is a better option than this mess. LOL. They have these repository packages of boinc all messed up right now... Quantal Quetzal (12.10) is the only one that's fixed right now... #resist |
