G'day all, A real newbie question. I have 100GB download available from my ISP, an Intel Q8200 @ 2.33GHz (4 processors) plus an Intel Quad CPU @ 2.4GHz (4 processors) plus a i7-3960 @ 3,3GHz (12 processors) and currently use around 25% of the combined CPU "in house" for about ten hours per day. My question. How much more CPU can I add before I start running out of internet bandwidth. I have no idea how much SETI@home uses or how to measure. Thanks Cheers, Mac Perth WA |

SETI@home Enhanced tasks are ~350 KB files (result files are ~20-30 KB for upload) AstroPulse tasks are ~8 MB files (result files are ~5-10 KB for upload) Count the number of tasks per day and you can find the total GB/month Or use the small program NetMeter (gives graphic of current up/down and sum per several periods): http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item26 (measures all the traffic, not only BOINC) You can also use the setting: Transfer at most --- Mbytes every --- days http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=global  - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)  |

Since ALF is not only funny and one of my favorite TV series (aired numerous times here in Bulgaria since early 1990s) but is also an acronym for Alien Life Form: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALF_(TV_series) ... I thought it appropriate to use his picture and quote here at SETI ;) (Not that he is too "Intelligent") Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

Proud to meet you Alf, and I apologise for not being instantly aware of your importance. I can assure you that if ever you venture "Down Under" you will meet with many more Alien Life Forms. They frequent night clubs all over Australia. LOL It has also occurred to me that if I had a number of superseded laptop computers that I could encourage them all to become part of SETI by stacking them away in a quite corner and letting them go about our SETI business. I could then leave them working until they ... well died of old age. Has this been done, of course "yes", but has it worked and contributed well to SETI? Mac Cheers, Mac Perth WA |
