Message 1225321 - Posted: 30 Apr 2012, 14:06:53 UTC - in response to Message 1225307.

How annoying.

I updated to Ubuntu 12.04.

The computer basically serves as a server for my Logitech Squeezebox, and crunches on the side.

And of course one of two things for which I actually use the computer, doesn't work :(

Hope they fix it fast.

OK, I've just tried a test install of Kubuntu 12.04LTS on an AMD 64-bit machine, installed Boinc 7.0.24 from the repository (using apt-get) and...

I get instant computation errors for s@h. Also still get them after a s@h project reset.

I've also tried PrimeGrid and e@h and they both work fine there.

So whatever the problem is, it is specific to the s@h client, or to interaction between the Boinc 7.0.24 and the s@h client.

Sorry, not got time to debug further for the moment. May look again later.

Aside: All is fine with a multitude of other Linux systems for earlier versions of Boinc. Might try one on that test system to see if it si Boinc or something new about the Ubuntu 12.04 distro.

Keep searchin',
Martin

Thanks Martin.
For clarity, I have a Ubuntu 12.04 system with a p4 that ran 7.0.24 fine without issue (besides heat).

And it also seems this bug is not related specifically to a processor type or architecture, as people with 32 and 64 bit processors have had this bug.

However I am curious if anyone has a 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 and is NOT getting this bug.

It also seems this bug persists in .25 and .26 versions of Boinc.

I'll test my 12.04 P4 system with 7.0.24 again later to be sure, but there are several 12.04 people that do NOT have the error issue. Isn't there?

I've filed a bug report here at launchpad. Anyone who has installed from the Ubuntu repository, has the bug and has a launchpad account (or feels like making one), should consider going to that link and adding your input and/or clicking "this bug also affects me"

[@Karston, my server is also sitting pretty idle without Boinc running, but as it's buried in the corner of my bedroom, at least it was quieter last night. :-)]

Looks like I'll be trying a 6.xx version (from Ubuntu 10.04) on my 12.04 system, and if it works that will be my solution for now.
I'm also interested in verifying that 7.0.26 from berkely and installed manually will in fact work. If so that's another solution.

xclusive:

I have subscribed to the launchpad bug and told that "this bug also affects me".

I don't have anything to contribute with, but will keep an eye on the development, so I can react as soon as there is a fix.

The downstream (repository) Boinc package manager for Ubuntu is very interested in this issue, but doesn't wanna make any moves/changes until he is sure what is going on.

Who around here can put me in contact with a Boinc software developer???
If anyone is aware of this issue on the Berkley end they really need to talk to the downstream package manager here

It needs to be verified that this "computation error" issue ONLY exists on the repository version, which if this is the case he will change the repo version to an unpatched Berkley version: if an unpatched version is guaranteed to fix this issue.

Thanks Hal. I guess I'm going to have to over-step a little here and email one of the two gentleman in regards to this issue. I'd hate to do it but, Ubuntu is one of the most popular OS's after Windows and Mac OS.

As I said the package maintainer for Ubuntu will fix it, but he needs to verify if it can be fixed simply by using an unpatched Berkeley version 7.0.26

There is also a message board for BOINC. You might try there first.

Yes that seems like a much more appropriate option. I'll start a thread there regarding this Ubuntu 12.04 issue.

I'll try to post what we believe to be true, and link to this thread and the lauchpad page/Ubuntu maintainer.

I just want to see this get sorted out and I think the buntu package maintainer deserves more information than I'm qualified to give.

Well I changed my mind about starting a thread in the other forum. The upstream package (Boinc downloaded from Berkeley's website) of 7.0.26 does not suffer this issue with Ubuntu. Therefore it is surely something with the repository packages from Ubuntu, so why even bother any Boinc developers.

Here's what we know:

Some Ubuntu 12.04 users cannot crunch s@h with their CPUs when using the repository package of Boinc 7.0.24. Work Units throw a "computation error" immediately upon trying to run. (a repository package of 7.0.26 also produced the same results) (other projects seem to work fine)
Both 32 and 64 bit users have reported this issue. This issue only happens with the Ubuntu repository version of the package. And not every user has this problem with the repository package, however most people who have tested it seemed to have the same issue.

Anyone wishing to push a fix along for the Ubuntu repository package should go here and click "this bug also affects me".

I've been testing things and communicating with a package maintainer there. He seems interested to help, and since I think we've both agreed that the issue lies strictly within the Ubuntu package, he may try to put a regular Berkeley version into the repository instead of the Debian/Ubuntu patched versions which are currently used.

I really hope to help out with this one.

IGNORE MY PREVIOUS POST^^ TYPO!
In the meantime I'll try to post "simple" instructions-

To install and use Berkely's 7.0.26 Boinc in Ubuntu:
Start by opening a terminal. (you can simply type "terminal" into unity's search to find the icon)

Type each line EXACTLY as written, hitting enter after typing each line.
[For 64bit:]
cd
wget http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.0.26_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh
sh boinc_7.0.26_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh
rm boinc_7.0.26_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

OR [For 32bit:]
cd
wget http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.0.26_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh
sh boinc_7.0.26_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh
rm boinc_7.0.26_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh

This will leave a folder named "BOINC" located at "/home/<yourusername>/BOINC"
If you know your way around Ubuntu you can make a shortcut icon to "/home/<username>/BOINC/run_manager" that launches it as a .sh (shell script).

Or you can launch your BOINC manager (again from a terminal) with:
sh /home/<yourusername>/BOINC/run_manager

Hope it helps guys.

Good work there... And good to chase up.

For your manual installs listed below, I've corrected the file names:

(Parallel edits! :-) There's also the missing "~" or "$HOME" for your cd, although likely not needed ;-) )

The "chmod +x" will also allow you to start the install with such as:

./boinc_7.0.26_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

OR [For 32bit:]
./boinc_7.0.26_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh

(Either way, you get the same result.)

All rather intriguing!

Problem...

Had to reboot and start BOINC for the first time since I installed 7.0.26, using /home/john/BOINC/run_manager

Problem is BOINC now shows nothing, SETI not attached event log empty. Also, for some reason it created a new computer ID on my account, saying I'm using 7.0.24

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=6639962

The real ID is still there

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=6636133

HELP :)

Sounds like there is more than one install of Boinc on your machine, and when you launch the manager, it's choosing the wrong client. Or possibly, your 7.0.24 install that didn't work is trying to run in the backround when your machine rebooted, preventing the proper boinc-client from running. Either way this should help that:

If you manually installed 7.0.26 from the Berkley website after already having an "apt-get" install OF Boinc:
Do "sudo apt-get remove boinc-manager"
and "sudo apt-get remove boinc-client"

This should leave nothing "Boinc" on your computer but your manual install from Berkley, and the required dependencies.

Now launching that install from Berkeley depends on where it is located.
you can "cd" (change directory) to the "BOINC" folder then "sh run_manager" to launch the manager. Or more simply "sh /home/john/BOINC/run_manager"

I uninstalled the Ubuntu 7.0.24 BOINC before I installed 7.0.26, and the BOINC that starts do say 7.0.26.

I did your uninstall commands and now BOINC starts normally (I think :) )

Blah my head hurts after yesterday. Too much thinking. The above message is the only information I can really offer. Hopefully someone else has more info.

This is why I'm working so hard to push the repository package maintainers for a fix.

People will run into problem after problem trying to navigate this software on a Linux box if not properly installed. (It's hard enough to navigate when it works right. :-))

Trying to install BOINC after your instructions (followed to the letter) I get the following when trying to launch boinc:

root@Ubuntu-server:~# sh /home/karsten/BOINC/run_manager
./boincmgr: error while loading shared libraries: libwx_gtk2u_html-2.8.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So even manual install won't work. This is getting frustrating/tiresome...

Ok do "sudo apt-get install boinc" this installs ALL requirements for boinc
then do EXACTLY "sudo apt-get remove boinc-client"
and EXACTLY "sudo apt-get remove boinc-manager"

What the above does, is install everything needed for boinc, and then it removes ONLY the client and ONLY the manager, leaving the other files that you need.
Do NOT do an "autoremove" or just "apt-get remove boinc" as this gets rid of files you need

This will leave those required lib files you need, that are missing right now causing your error.

And you can run the run_manager without being "root" once you close the manager it will give you the option to run s@h in the background.

Seems to be running now...

At least Manager started, and is DL'ing files.

Will see if I get errors again.

How do I get it to autostart when Ubuntu boots?

That's a whole nother story... there are options,

This is not the proper method, but you can use "cron" to run a command like this:
"@reboot sleep 10; sh /home/john/BOINC/run_client", this would run the client half in the background on boot. (the sleep 10 makes the script wait 10 seconds while everything finishes booting)

But you need to learn the basics of cron to do that.
I would log out of root and into my normal account, and type "crontab -e" to open a cron. Then I'd add the above line to it. Then control+o to save and control+x to exit
