Hi,

I recently installed Centos V6.2 (x86_64) on my machine and I wanted to continue running Boinc/S@H. I had previously been running Ubuntu (x86_64) for about 2 years without issue, at least as related to Boinc/S@H).

I installed BOINC and Boinc Manager from the System -> Administration -> Add/Remove Software menu in Centos. The installation seem to have happened without issue.

However when I start the Boinc Manager and click Advanced -> Select Computer and enter my computer's name and my user password, the Manager says it is 'Connecting to localhost' for about a minute and then gives up and says 'Disconnected'. I can never get it to connect.

I've been searching for a couple of days to try to sort out what is missing, but I haven't found a solution.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Jon

I know on my setup (Ubuntu Linux), I have boinc running as a service (daemon), and it runs as root. Therefor the only way I can I properly run BOINC manager is by issuing the "sudo" command to ensure the manager will run as root so it can connect to the client which is running root.

I don't know redhat/centos -at all- but try running the manager as root and see if it connects to the client. Other than that, someone else will have to help out here..

I almost overlooked the simple part. make sure you fire up "boinc" before you try "boincmgr"...

The "client" (background boinc process) needs to be running in order to the "manager" to connect to it, obviously.

(I've experimented with boinc shortly on other ubuntus and found sometimes I had to manually start the client, and sometimes it was already running and ready to be connected to, depending on versions I was playing with...)

Thank you for your replies Dave.

I seem to have figured this out by piecing things together from the BOINC FAQ and other sites.

The problem seems to have been the password that I was using when I would click on: Advanced -> Select Computer in the Boinc Manager. I would enter the host name, but I was entering my own login password as the password. That seems to have been the problem.

I should have been entering the password from the 'gui_rpc_auth.cfg' file. This file is placed in the BOINC project data data directory (i.e. /var/lib/boinc on my CentOS machine).

When I used this password, the Boinc Manager was finally able to connect to the client and I was able to again attach to the S@H project.

Thanks again for your suggestions!
Regards,
Jon
