Message 1216698 - Posted: 11 Apr 2012, 3:12:33 UTC

Hi guys, sorry I was posting about the optimized apps in the questions and answers section- i just read somewhere that this is actually the correct forum for questions about running the optimized app.

I used the Lunatics installer v0.40 tonight to try running the optimized apps on my laptop. It is a Core 2 Extreme x9000 (penryn) processor, with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 8800 (512mb) GPU.

I selected the 557 version for Astropulse in the first area of the installer.
Underneath that, I selected SSE4.1 (Intel) for the second area.

Prior to installing these apps, in the BOINC manager there would always be 3 tasks running at a time (1 for each of the 2 CPUs, and one for the GPU). The rest of the downloaded tasks would be at the state of "Ready to start"

So now that the BOINC is running with the optimized app, there is 1 task that says "running" normally, and there are 7 saying "waiting to run (0.04 CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPUs)(Waiting for GPU memory)", and another one at at a time that says "Running, high priority (0.04 CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPUs)". This "high priority" task keeps moving from task to task and doesnt seem to be progressing the percentage at all. It seems to run a task for 30 seconds then move onto another one.

I read on the Lunatics pre-install thread that this is an indication of low memory on the GPU, but I am running GPUZ and the GPU is only using about 63Mb (out of 512), and the memory controller and video controller loads are near 0%, so I dont think the GPU is actually out of memory.

Any thoughts?

I have pasted below just the first 1/8 of the event log. I can provide a screen shot if there is a way to upload one on here.

I know in the log it says "don't use GPU while computer in use" is active in the preferences, but i always have the override on (under the "Activity" menu in the BOINC manager I have the CPUs, GPU, and network set to always use - i only suspend them when I want to use my laptop for something else that is CPU intensive like watching a movie etc..)

In BOINC Manager, click one of those tasks which has restarted multiple times, then the Properties button. The slot directory for the task will be shown. Find that directory (C:\ProgramData\BOINC\slots\xx) and look in the stderr.txt file to get more detail of what's happening. Copy and paste here if the meaning is not clear.

What's happening is the application can't run for some reason so it uses a temporary exit telling BOINC to try again in 3 minutes. Meanwhile BOINC tries other tasks which also can't run so you get a set of tasks which will be retried periodically. If the temporary exit mechanism weren't used, all GPU tasks would error out almost immediately.
                                                                   Joe

Here is the info in stder file for one of the tasks that runs as "high priority" for 30 seconds and then goes back to waiting.
i had never seen anything like this before installing the optimization app. as i mentioned below, the BOINC manager would very neatly run 3 tasks at a time and as soon as one was done it would start one of the tasks that had "ready to start" as the status.

i don't know if it is significant, but prior to this problem happening, 2 of the tasks that were running would say "running" in the status tab while the third running task would say something like "running (0.48 CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPUs). i never understood exactly what that meant but i assumed the third task just meant it was the task being run by my nvidia GPU (not sure why it said .48 of cpus because i was under the impression that the 2 CPUs were already 100% in use by the first 2 tasks)

Not related... the CPU usage is not a real meassure, is just an estimation of how much work the app needs from the CPU to feed the GPU. If all the cores are bussy the extra work is made by sharing the CPU beetwen them taking turns to access it.

The main issue is: that
CUDA driver version (used by your host) is insufficient for CUDA runtime version (used by the optimized apps)
I think you will need to update the GPU drivers.

it seems that the error message is indeed indicating that, but how come the GPU was working fine with the currently installed drivers before i installed the optimized apps? a couple of months ago i remember manually updating my NVidia drivers, just because i had never done it before, and I immidiately got a blue screen and my computer crashed (first and only time it ever crashed on me). Luckily i was able to use my windows restore point and got my computer back to normal shortly after. For this reason, I am a bit hesitant to go updating the nvidia driver. (i am running windows 7 64 bit, on an alienware m15x laptop in case anybody else has had a similar issue with the same type of computer).

Do you think the reason for this problem could have to do with me selecting the wrong boxes when i installed the optimized installer v0.40 ?

I checked v 557 (2nd option) on the first part, for astropulse.
and i checked SSE4.1 on the second part.
I also let the last box, regarding the NVIDIA GPU stay checked. I did not check off the ATI boxes on the second page of the install.

186.3 is an ancient driver. Update to something at or above 285.62.

EDIT: My bad for not noticing that when you were posting in Q&A. Would've mentioned it much sooner.

no problem bud! you've been a great help as it is. i used to provide tech support when i was in the laptop building business back in the day, and i know it can be a headache. i am always very grateful when someone takes the time out of their day to help me problem solve :-)

i am creating a system image right now just in case something goes haywire, and then im gonna update those drivers.

It could be that it worked before cause the stock apps dont use the specialized features of the new drivers.

In the optimized installer, it has several flavours for CPU apps, but (if im not wrong) there is only one option for NV GPU apps. So I dont think you have choosen a wrong one.

Stock 6.08 requires driver version 177.00 or better, 6.09 requires 190.38 or better, and 6.10 requires 195.00 or better.

As the Lunatics v0.40 release notes say, x41g "Requires minimum CUDA 3.2 capable NVidia driver: 263.06 (260.99 on notebooks)".

thanks guys. it does seem that the new lunatics app does indeed require nvidia drivers 263 and above. unfortunately, the alienware m15x, a supposed gaming laptop, has issues with these drivers. i just installed the latest nvidia driver that was released last week and got the blue screen of death again, and had to use system restore. i did snooping around on the internet apparently ALL alienware 15x users who are running windows 7 64 bit are having the same exact issue. NVIDIA driver 186.1 or .3 are the ONLY drivers that work with my laptop. it is amazing that alienware has not fixed this problem since it has been occurring for years. even more amazing, is that alienware is a gaming computer company and obviously people like me who spend a fortune on a computer from them, want and NEED the latest NVIDIA drivers to run games and other applications! i am going to call alienware and flip out on them right now, will keep you guys posted lol. they have some nerve selling us these expensive gaming computers and then leaving us without the option to upgrade (i read that alienware refuses to support windows 7 on their m15x's) here is a link to one of many many threads i found discussing problems of alienware 15x users to upgrade their NVIDIA cards to drivers over 186.x

I had a similiar problem with a Dell laptop some time ago.
It was a "hybrid" system with Intel and Nvidia Graphics and Dell only supported the older driver. Nvida respons was that Dell had some standard software integrated in the laptop that only worked with the older driver.

I called up Alienware and they are basically useless. First of all, since my system was purchased before Dell bought Alienware, they are not honoring legacy systems (cheap bastards). They are also not concerning themselves with any m15x's that have installed Windows 7, as the system was released with Windows XP (I upgraded to Windows 7 64bit myself in 2009).
Of course they then tried to blame it on NVidia.

They scheduled me a callback from the gaming dept and said they can try to access my computer remotely in order fix the issue, for a fee.

I doubt they will be able to do anything I haven't tried already but I'll give them a shot.

Truly amazing that a GAMING computer company hasn't cared enough to fix a bug relating to top of the line GPU's in their GAMING systems. The thought of this injustice makes my brain hurt!

If anybody has any other ideas I'd be happy to hear it, but at this point, if I am truly unable to update my GPU drivers, will I have to uninstall and the reinstall the optimized app, and uncheck the NVIDIA GPU option? (only leave the astropulse v557 option and SSE4.1 options checked)
It is a shame that I will not be able to the optimized app for my very decent GPU to crunch for SETI.

I was recomended to try a driver from here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers by Dell support... They said that it "might" work.

But I never got the time to test it before the owner of the laptop wanted it back...

It is a shame that I will not be able to the optimized app for my very decent GPU to crunch for SETI.

Unfortunately, the process of optimisation tends to be forward-looking to the point, sometimes, of being almost blinkered: peripheral and rearward vision becomes harder and harder as the bug bites deeper. However, in cases like this, the best is sometimes the enemy of the good enough.

Three years ago, we knew how to get the best out of cards like the 8800 GTX (though I don't ever remember coming across an 'M' version before): I'm sure the knowledge isn't entirely lost.

Excuse me while I consult the other greybeards. Driver 186, so we need stock 608, check? 512 MB VRAM, so no memory worries. Did the DLLs have a driver version limit, too? We know they were mostly interchangeable, and cuda23 were the best of that bunch?

Yani, we can certainly sort you something out, if you're game for a bit of manual file editing (and maybe a little trial and error). The starting points will be the stable driver for your hardware, and the Lunatics installer run with only the two CPU applications selected. Let us know if you want us to take it on from there.

It might be possible to make a MBCuda aistub with the stock 6.08 app and required dll files in it. Then you will just need to drop in the stock app, dll's and the aistub and then run aimerge.

Message 1217048 - Posted: 11 Apr 2012, 22:46:46 UTC

thanks for being optimistic guys! i've spent ALL DAY reading every post in every single forum on the planet regarding this issue. apparently both of my main issues with this laptop are shared by everyone who ever bought an m15x - the screen hinge repeatedly breaks (i'm on my third) and the whole NVIDIA drivers issue.

so i went ahead an uninstalled the optimized app and re-installed it with just the v557 option for the astropulse and SSE4.1 for the second part. I unchecked the option for the Nvidia GPU.

Right now BOINC is running 2 tasks, which are probably both CPU tasks. it has only downloaded 2 tasks for some reason so I can't really tell just yet if it will start crunching a third task with a GPU if more than 2 tasks are available. i don't see why it wouldn't. Before I installed the optimized app, the GPU was being used by BOINC 6.0.25 for SETI@home tasks.

i would be happy to try anything that you guys could suggest, but I must warn you i'm not very familiar with programming and advanced GPU things (i always worked more on the hardware side of IT).

What are you referring to as far as "stock 608"?
Yes it is a 512MB vram card. The errors BOINC was throwing off at first glance look like a VRAM problem, but that was not really the case (checked with GPU-Z).
My system is reverted back to what does work so yes it is running driver 186.3 right now (this is apparently the last compatible driver).
I don't know anything about the DLL's, if you tell me how, I'll be happy to check.

Ready to try something new on your command, Richard

Unfortunately, time zones have intervened - if I try to guide you through something new at this time of night, neither of us is going to be a happy bunny. I'll put something together in the morning.

You said you've read every thread going? You'll have come across this one, then. DON'T try to follow it - it's two years old, and already far too advanced for your hardware. But it's an example of the sort of work I would suggest that you carry out - copying extra lines into a text file, and copying files from one place to another. Not exactly programming, in the grand scheme of things.

Until later, goodnight.

Sound good richard, I'm ready when you are.

Just curious about something unrelated;

Besides the alienware computer we are discussing my GPU issue with, I installed the optimized app with SSSE3 on one of my other different machines and it seems to be working fine. But when I look at my crunching task results for that computer, none of the tasks say "anonymous platform" under the application type. Does every task that the optimized app runs necessarily have to say anonymous platform?
Apologies for the extra question, it probably isnt important but i was just curious.

The tasks themselves will still say 6.03,etc. But if you look here you'll see that those tasks since you switched to optimized show as anonymous platform, CPU.
