What's the best way to do the upgrade? Uninstall 6x then install 7 or install right over 6x or can/will it be installed along with 6x (have both installed)?

In my opinion the tasks in progress could be a problem, especially when it comes to BOINC Manager as a whole, not Seti@home alone.

Except for possibly Astropulse, the Seti@home tasks are having short running times. But when it comes to some of the tasks belonging to ClimatePrediction and PrimeGrid, some of these tasks could become very long in duration.

I am not too happy to kill off a 500+ hour ClimatePrediction task after 350 hours of running or a 350 hour Seventeen or Bust PrimeGrid tasks after 200 hours of running just because a new version of the software (in this case, BM) is available.

Also the file and directory structure being used by the software should not be forgotten. It too soon may become a mess, particularly if a crash should occur and you were able to recover what you lost (plus the rest of it).

You can install 7 directly over 6.

However, due to changes to how client_state.xml is written to, once you have gone over to 7, you cannot return to 6 without getting problems.

Then you set No New Tasks under BOINC 7.0, run all work to end, upload & report it. Then uninstall 7.0, delete client_state.xml and client_state_prev.xml from your BOINC Data directory, reinstall BOINC 6.x, set Allow new tasks.

Is there a deadline for running BOINC 6 ? Just wondering when we have to go to 7.

I don't think that there'll be a deadline. I'm still using BOINC 5!

Do you happen to have a service/protected application execution installation?

From Boinc 6.12.38 onwards:

client: Disable GPU detection of Windows when running as a service to avoid a deadlock condition with the latest ATI drivers.

Uninstall Boinc, then reinstall and on the Boinc configuration page, click Advanced, and untick Protected application execution, then run through the rest of the installation as normal.
(I'm not sure if you have to reboot, or have stop the service after uninstalling Boinc)

Message 1216331 - Posted: 9 Apr 2012, 23:08:38 UTC - in response to Message 1216305.

Works all okay with the optimized lunatics apps?

For those running anonymous platform without <flops> in the app_info.xml there's a possible issue. The <dont_use_dcf> feature implemented in changeset [trac]changeset:25477[/trac] will eventually get turned on when the project's server code is updated to version 7. If an uneasy truce has been achieved with DCF greatly different than 1.0, runtime estimates will change greatly for a host running the BOINC 7.0 client.

The applicable checkin_note was added the next day:
David 22 Mar 2012
- client/server: add optional <dont_use_dcf/> to schedule reply.
If set, client won't use DCF for this project.
    Make this the default in server code;
we now do runtime estimation entirely on the server side,
and the client-side mechanism is counterproductive.

The "optional" isn't very much so, the project would have to edit /boinc/sched/sched_types.cpp to not send it.

This is just a heads-up for those who might be affected, the server-side estimates of runtime have ignored DCF for more than a year.
                                                                  Joe

What would be the formula for AP NV and MB NV?
