Just wanted to introduce myself as a NOOb'ie to this amazing project. I wish I had found out about the program 10 years ago about when it started instead of a week ago but better late than never. I am looking for other projects & tasks here to join and run on my computer and I would be very grateful for amyone that can point me to the right project. I would like to be involved in the search for exoplanets which is my first love and until NASA launches "The Terrestrial Planet Finder" I would be overjoyed to be part of any other project that searches for exoplanets. Thank you all for your suggestions on this topic. If you want it, get it. If you dream it, believe it. The sky's never the limit. So go on, show the world who you are. Don't be afraid to show your true colors. |

I have been at it a while, and still hope that one day we may find the evidence that proves that there is, or even was, intelligent life on some other planet other than our own. I thought einstein was looking for binary stars and black holes. We will get to crunch the kepler data eventually right here. I assume they are waiting to introduce the v7 Multibeam before doing so. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

My guess is that you already should know about it if you are somewhat experienced and familiar with your subject. Generally speaking. So the question then becomes - when do you know it? Is there a difference or separation between the numbers you may (possibly) get and the numbers which may indicate the precence of another intelligent civilization living in space? Take Seth Shoestak for example - being a human being (bleh), he is an example of a Type 0 civilization (in fact about 0.84 or so, slowly closing in on 1 around the year 2100). He is in fact representing such a known type of civilization, namely our own. (Not implying anything - just filling in here). So if there are other Type 0 civilizations existing in space, they may be able to broadcast their own precence out in space, a signal which could already have been received by us. Also such civilizations may already know about us as well. But there may be also be some Buck Rogers figures around. You may recall a video showing a craft landing in the city of Riga, the capital of "Lithuania (or "Litauen" in my own language). Possibly it rather was the city of Vilnius instead. This could have been some Buck Rogers (figure) trying to land in that city. And Flash Gordon is supposed to be part of a Type 1 civilization as well if not even better than that (Type 2). But both of them are really phantasy, dream away figures, created out of our own imagination as well as phantasies. So if there should be some Type 2 or Type 3 civilizations around, are they supposed to be technological civilizations, or are we just back at looking at those natural objects which we already know are existing in space? |

The Mystro, Its never too late to get started running SETI on your PC. Good to have you with us! The BOINC website has a good list of projects and a short explaination telling you what they do. Take your pick of the projects; http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php John. |

Thanks John for the list. I told myself I was only going to run 1 project and that would be it. Well, I am now running 3 and I am getting the feeling that when it's all done and over it I will be running at least half of them if not more...lol! I was if you can tell me how to have all 3 projects screen savers switch on my desktop Pc from time to time because it is only running the Rosetta@home on my screen saver and the SETI@home and the other one is not showing up as well. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance, Sean... If you want it, get it. If you dream it, believe it. The sky's never the limit. So go on, show the world who you are. Sean, Listen its good to try out a few projects when your starting. As time goes on, if you read some of the info on the project websites, you will learn more and more about the science each project is doing. And that a good thing Sean! But be careful, running these BOINC projects and reading about the science they do is addictive!! Next thing you know, you will be gone BOINCing mad and recruiting your friends and family to run science projects on their PC's!!! LOL:) As far as i'm aware, if you have 3 projects running, and all 3 projects have a screen saver, in theory, your computer will split the time spent crunching each project by one third each. So in theory, if you watch your PC over the coarse of a week or two, you definitely will see different screen savers appearing from time to time. But don't expect to see this happen on an hourly basis. BOINC will automatically alternate the projects over several days, rather than over a few hours. Just be patient! I'm at this a few years now Sean. And i have run almost all the projects at some stage, i love them all. I'm a science addict! But at the end of the day, i always return to just running SETI@home by itself. I believe in the science behind this project, and i always return to it! Sean SETI science is REAL!! Its real science. Your computer really is searching for signals from the stars that were not made by us! And we will succeed at some stage. It just takes time! Keep the faith my friend, and your faith in God! I believe in God too Sean! God is real and in time mankind will learn the true nature of who God really is. We are very close to that time Sean, its going to happen soon! John. |
