Is there any way to get the forum here, accessible via tapatalk? It sure would be convenient for us smartphone and tablet users. I am not sure what the default forum system is, that comes with BOINC, and is used here.

Q: Which forum system does it [tapatalk] currently support?

A: Currently phpBB3 3.x, vBulletin 3.6 to 4.x, xenForo, IPBoard 3.x, SMF 1.1.11+/2.x, MyBB 1.4/1.6, bbPress 1.1/2.0 and Kunena 1.6+ are supported. Other forum system might also support Tapatalk with plugins developed by third party developers using Tapatalk API.

It is an entirely home grown system.

Fair enough. But does that mean it is impossible, or even hard, to make it work with tapatalk?

There would have to be significant interest in making it work considering the extremely limited number of coders working for BOINC/SETI (I believe 8 total people) and the number of other projects the coders are focused on at this time.

However, it seems that the head of BOINC, Dr. David Anderson, knows the value of socialization and knows the importance of cell phones used in social networking that it may not be too hard to get him to put it on the plan. I just may take a year or so to make it happen, and if the interest is lost, that could ruin the chances of it getting implemented.

Or perhaps less, now that BOINC is in the GSoC 2012. He may put it up for any volunteer student programmer to do over the coming summer vacation.

(Oh and yes, I sent David an email about this already. ;-))

Edit: quick answer from David:
? they can access the forums in a web browser.
If needed, we could modify the web code to make it more compact (not banner, etc.) if accessed from a small display

So the question is, Erik, can't you access the forums just from a browser?

Sure. Browser access is always possible. But tapatalk makes it a lot faster and easier, especially for smaller devices like phones. It's hard to describe. But once you start accessing forums with tapatalk, going back to browser access is a bit clunky. Especially for phones.

Thanks for taking this to DA, regardless of the outcome!

I am curious about this myself. I have other forums as well I'd like to see on tapatalk. As well, I in time will have a forum on one of my domains which I would also like to be tapatalk compatible. So I am very curious what goes into the process.

I imagine it could be as simple as some application pulling data from the forums sql....

Or as complex as the whole forum needing to be built in a compatible fashion..

Very interested

The forums I listed in the original post already have the hooks built in. You just need to turn on the function.

Thank you. Didn't catch that part in your post the first time through. At least it seems most of the major forum softwares support it. Good news there.

Yep. All the major forum developers seem to see the need... =;^)
