Not correct, because most people don't have the education to make an informed opinion.

If people did, then the manufactures wouldn't make the products in the first place.

How many people know that fructose is worse for you that sugar?

How many people realise the artificial sweeteners fulfill the desire for things sweet but fail to satisfy the hunger, so that they end up eating more than they should?

Sorry to bring chemistry into this question about chemicals.

To make statements like the above you need to be more specific than 'sugar'.
There are many sugars. Fructose is a sugar. As is glucose, a sugar often found in energy drinks like Lucozade. As is Lactose, harmless to most people, causes serious problems for those who are intolerant.
Assuming you're talking about cane sugar, which is predominantly sucrose. Sucrose is a disaccharide of glucose and fructose, and upon digestion is broken down into those two sugars. So fructose isn't worse than 'sugar', fructose is 'sugar'.

Very dangerous.

Eh? Not really sure what you're trying to say.

After how long (in my most humble obvious opinion) to further (modestly) curb one line of killer deceit?...

MPs back standardised cigarette packaging

MPs have voted in favour of introducing standardised packaging for cigarettes in the UK.

It means from 2016 every packet will look the same except for the make and brand name, with graphic photos accompanying health warnings if the House of Lords also approves the move.

The Irish Republic passed a similar law earlier this month and Australia has had plain packaging since 2012.

Health campaigners said they were "delighted" with the move.

... It comes after a long battle to get to this point. The government announced in 2011 it would be considering standardised packaging and ran a consultation in 2012.

But ministers then appeared to go cool on the plan, prompting accusations it had been influenced by the tobacco industry, before another review of the public health benefits was ordered. That review was carried out by by paediatrician Sir Cyril Chantler and concluded last year it was very likely the change would lead to a modest but important reduction in the uptake and prevalence of smoking.

More than 600 children aged 11 to 15 start to smoke every day - more than 200,000 a year...

... And that is just in the UK!

Martin

Ban them?

What, and lose the massive tax income to the treasury?

Ban them?

By that I assume that you are advocating a ban on all cigarette smoking?

Well for starters the worlds tobacco companies and growers are far too powerful and influential to allow that to happen, and secondly the smokers would never stand for it. Look what happened during prohibition in the USA 1920-1933, (18th and 21st amendments) boot leggers and a black market. The same would happen with cigarettes.

Any law would simply be unenforceable, the same as a ban on using mobile phones in cars. To cut down smoking you make it unsociable, too expensive, or give graphic warnings on packets. All three are happing in the UK.

Late edit - Simon is right, Chancellors would never give it the light of day!

(pun intended)

Again... You have made an incorrect assumption about me.

Why would I advocate banning something that is harmful.

It is up to the Individual to either stop, or not start: Sugar, Salt, Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana, etc.

Unless one believes The (Stupid) People need Superior Persons, to Control them.

Really just 'stupid' people to be 'duped'? Or children to be victimized?...

No. See the question mark, which I 'Bolded'?

It was a question regarding the thinking regarding banning Sugar, Salt, Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana, etc. , of the original poster.

It means: Do YOU wish to ban 'bad' things?

Nothing more. Nothing less.

It might have been clearer if you spoke in fuller sentences, rather than ambiguous questions.

Sorry for using the 'Socratic Method' (as we do in Universities), to understand the foundational thinking of others in these threads. Did this for 20 years.

Thought you understood.

Just my way. As you post in your way.

Socratic method: "a form of inquiry and discussion between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to illuminate ideas."
Asking questions is fine, provided it's clear what exactly the question is asking.

"Are you suggesting we should ban them?" Clear

"Ban them?" Unclear.

Why do you think that you have a right to badger people to make a reply to you? Perhaps they have gainful employment to go to, perhaps they are just busy with real life, perhaps they just don't want to reply.

Thanks Chris and yes, rather busy in the real world with, surprisingly enough, some rather grumpy Americans... (Can't believe they all act like the old-style TV "John Wayne"!)

Does give me, and others, a smile.

Really? care to disclose, with their permission, who these others are? I think we would all be interested to know if there are more like you out there.

Careful now... You might have Clyde on the spot that he might not have a cult blindly following his thoughts...

Three sides of 'sliming'...

South African townships’ addictive drug cocktail

Dishevelled young men and women surround the corner shops of a small farming community in north-eastern South Africa smoking "nyaope" - a uniquely South African cocktail of drugs.

A mixture of low grade heroin, marijuana, cleaning detergents, rat poison and chlorine, nyaope is cheap...

... "This drug has turned me into a thief because I steal from my family and neighbours to pay for my addiction."...

... "Heaven" is short-lived as the effects wear off in a few hours, but trying to stop altogether can be hell for the addicts - and is expensive because of the medication needed to treat withdrawal symptoms. ...

Has the war on drugs been lost?

... Across the world, drug laws are being relaxed, from Uruguay to Portugal, Jamaica and the Czech Republic. Does this mean the war on drugs has been lost? ...

... drugs is the only path that you have to get yourself out of poverty...

... The prison system is a disaster. There's virtually no rehabilitation. Locking up low level individuals who have drug problems or who have limited other options is not effective...

Breastfeeding 'linked to higher IQ'

From the comments to that article:

Breast milk has evolved over millions of years. Formula milk has a much shorter gestation and is designed to make money. Am I surprised at what is best - No, not in the slightest!

Is it moral to exploit any/all of desperation, ignorance, laziness to the detrimental health/well-being of the victims?

Understand Martin has no answer, regarding his thinking.

Shall I now understand you to be Martin Jr.?
I made my thoughts on the tobacco issue quite plain earlier.

Wanna keep on playing your silly, silly, and more silly, game?
I'm not the one playing games here.

Does give me, and others, a smile.
All i asked was that you speak in a less unclear fashion. I wasn't aware you find this notion so amusing.

Not unclear. Of course.

Posted a list of other bad things: Sugar, salt, etc., and asked Martin -

Ban Them?

If you need me to add 'too': Your problem. Not mine.

Not my problem. Language is to convey one's thoughts and ideas, if you do that in an unclear fashion, then you're not using language correctly.
If people don't understand what you're saying because you can't write it down clearly, that's your problem, not theirs.

BTW: Martin can answer for himself.

What was his answer?

I wouldn't presume to answer for Martin or anyone else.

You are you. Your way.

I am me. My way.

There are two types of persons.
There are two types of people.

Grammar fanatics, and Intellectuals. Your grammar is impeccable. My intelligence, is also impeccable.
The two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Those of high intelligence also tend to make better use of grammar.

BTW: YOU did hijack Martin's answer, with your grammar lesson.
I haven't interrupted Martin.

If Martin did not understand: He could have asked for clarification. Are you his mentor?
Sorry, i didn't realise this was your private forum.

... To go,back-and-forth, for, let's say - the next decade?

Hopefully, these forums can be far more productive than that...

Three quotes come to mind:

If you make your best effort to be kinder,
nurture compassion,
make the world a better place,
then you can say "At least I've done my best"

-- Dalai Lama

Choose choice, before there is no choice left

-- Leo Laporte

Follow-ups on a more appropriately titled thread please?...

And then to get back on-topic: There is the "sliming" of language by Marketing coercion all for the sake of peddling whatever products regardless of the cost to philosophy and anything else... A form of deliberate "mis-education" polluting our words?...
