As it stands now, if someone in genetic engineering decides that some Cat DNA encoding is beneficial to cows or pigs, it could very easily be moved to the food chain. ![]() Janice |

No surprise on how this one is developing, nor for what is beginning to be found now that a few checks are being made: Horsemeat scandal: Government 'flat-footed' over crisis ... called for greater testing of products to reassure people there is not a threat to human health. Food minister David Heath said three horses, slaughtered in the UK, had tested positive for bute and may have entered the food chain in France. Responding to an urgent question in the House, he said tests for traces of bute in Findus products were negative. A total of eight horse carcasses tested positive for phenylbutazone (bute), an anti-inflammatory painkiller used to treat horses which can in rare cases by harmful to humans if ingested. ... ... "It seems improbable that individuals prepared to pass horsemeat off as beef illegally are applying the high hygiene standards rightly required in the food production industry... Unsavory stuff? What surprises me is that NO retailer had apparently been testing the food they had been supplying to the public. One, and only one retailer in the UK, the CO-OP, has said that they and only they must be responsible for supplying the public with food no one had any idea what it was and where it came from. Personally I have no idea where to buy my food but what it actually means is no one in Europe, perhaps anywhere has any idea what they are actually eating!!! "Proud to be born and bred in Croydon" |

What surprises me is that NO retailer had apparently been testing the food they had been supplying to the public. Why would they? Should they distrust their suppliers? If so just how much testing is needed? How many different things should they test for? What level constitutes pass/fail for each item they test for? How much product should they test? How often should they test? How fast should they get results? Isn't this really the job for a government department so that uniform standards are enforced? ![]() ![]() |

most of the government agencies responsible are appointed at the recommendations from lobbyists from those that would like to continue to feed you stuff you really do not want to know.. but you should trust because they have sunshine and singing birds in their advertisements. They are often there to serve the industry over the consumer. After all if it is bad for sales it must be bad for everyone. Until the consumers stand up and say no more, the commercial food chain is russian roulette. Buy as much local from people you know and trust as possible. Ask questions.. and listen between the lines. "We do not use ammoniated products in our ground beef" means we may have genetically engineered products of unknown origins in with gods know what and loaded with hormones and animal antibiotics that were treated with citric acid instead of ammonia at the factory that processes the beef-byproducts so we can slide them back into it. ![]() Janice |

From an email I received today :) Let's go, Tesco Just wondering. Are there any known cases of people getting ill from this "scandal". It reminds me of an incident some years ago when some Australian "beef" exported to the US was found to contain kangaroo meat. There was a lot of hoo haa but nobody suffered any ill effects. Methinks it's a bit of a storm in a teacup, afterall what doesn't kill you is edible. T.A. |

most of the government agencies responsible are appointed at the recommendations from lobbyists from those that would like to continue to feed you stuff you really do not want to know.. The more involvement by businesses, the worse the government gets. It is supposed to be of "the people". And I think we have made SOME progress to getting it back in recent years, a lot of regress is desired by the tea party. And a lot of regress was accomplished during the Dubya years. Same garbage/different day. Dig in. Edit: I would LIKE a government that ensures the quality of our food supply. Sadly it does not, and it needs better regulation. Not by those trying to feed us this ...... STUFF. ![]() Janice |

...... Talk about flogging a dead horse!... Shouldn't that have been a Roo-Haa? Ha! ;-) Of greater concern is that if there is fraud to dump 'other products' such as horse meat in with products that are not horse meat, there is also the high likelihood that anything that can be passed off as 'meat-like' from any unsavory source is likely included for cheap... Including such as condemned meat... Directly of concern for the horse meat is that some veterinary drugs used on animals are very unhealthy for human consumption... Especially so for old horses... http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2013/02/21/seafood-fraud-study/?hpt=li_c1 It is amazing how much sea food there is that is farm raised and frozen. The practices used are often not only not sustainable, but unsafe and downright disgusting. ![]() Janice |

Let's just cut all the nonsense. We can solve this whole problem by just renaming everything 'animal protein deemed safe enough for you to eat and not die'. I dunno what the marketing people will be able to do with that one, however. My body may be here, but my mind is in a galaxy far, far away. Have made friends here. Most were cats. ![]() |

Go vegetarian, go healthy, and help save our planet also? There were some ads running on TV here in Oz promoting the "Save the planet, go vegetarian" line. They made me wonder. How much methane would 7 billion farting vegetarians produce and how much would that effect Climate Change ? (Off topic I know, but Martin started it <grin> ) T.A. |

Go vegetarian, go healthy, and help save our planet also? It's the cows, man...it's the cows. By eating them we save the planet from a sure methane death. My body may be here, but my mind is in a galaxy far, far away. Have made friends here. Most were cats. ![]() |

Apparently kangaroo don't pass anywhere near as much methane as cows, and their flesh has much less "nasty" fats in it. So perhaps we should get rid of cows and go for kangaroo instead? Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

it takes 10 pound of vegetable matter to make 1 lb of beef so vegetarian to beef would be about ten to one for pigs it is 3 lb of veg to 1 lb of meat kangaroo don't know anybody got a number lol. |

it takes 10 pound of vegetable matter to make 1 lb of beef This is also why animals that live on a vegetarian diet typically have large multichambered guts to process the food. Humans lack the teeth or gut of a herbivore to process a true vegetarian diet. Typical vegetarian diets require large quantities of vegetable matter to get the nutrients needed to live and grow. Luckily, humans are not herbivores, no matter what some humans seem to insist on doing In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |
