It is amazing how much sea food there is that is farm raised and frozen. The practices used are often not only not sustainable, but unsafe and downright disgusting.

Let's just cut all the nonsense.
We can solve this whole problem by just renaming everything 'animal protein deemed safe enough for you to eat and not die'.
I dunno what the marketing people will be able to do with that one, however.

Go vegetarian, go healthy, and help save our planet also?

There were some ads running on TV here in Oz promoting the "Save the planet, go vegetarian" line.

They made me wonder. How much methane would 7 billion farting vegetarians produce and how much would that effect Climate Change ?

(Off topic I know, but Martin started it <grin> )

It's the cows, man...it's the cows.
By eating them we save the planet from a sure methane death.

Apparently kangaroo don't pass anywhere near as much methane as cows, and their flesh has much less "nasty" fats in it. So perhaps we should get rid of cows and go for kangaroo instead?

it takes 10 pound of vegetable matter to make 1 lb of beef

so vegetarian to beef would be about ten to one

for pigs it is 3 lb of veg to 1 lb of meat

kangaroo don't know anybody got a number lol.

This is also why animals that live on a vegetarian diet typically have large multichambered guts to process the food. Humans lack the teeth or gut of a herbivore to process a true vegetarian diet. Typical vegetarian diets require large quantities of vegetable matter to get the nutrients needed to live and grow. Luckily, humans are not herbivores, no matter what some humans seem to insist on doing

Continuing on...

Further tests after 'horse DNA' find in beef products

Preliminary tests have found six new beef products that may contain horse DNA, the Food Standards Agency says. ...

They also found three beef products with pig DNA above a 1% threshold. ...

... Meanwhile, inspectors have stopped meat production at a plant in Poland run by a firm that exports to the UK. Viola denies claims that it was adding rotten meat to its products at the plant in the northern village of Lniano.

Surprising that 'habits' haven't changed more:

Horsemeat scandal 'changing shoppers' habits'

... The survey by Which? found that 60% of 2,000 adults questioned online had changed how they shop, with many now buying less processed meat.

It also suggested that public trust in the food industry had declined.

Horsemeat has been found in a number of processed beef products across Europe, raising questions about the food chain. ...

As is sadly the case, the comments to that article are far more educated and interesting than the actual article. The real world and detail blinded by blind journalism? Still all food for thought...

Surprising that 'habits' haven't changed more:

And no surprise for what has been found from a quick look:

Veterinary drug found in ... budget corned beef

... recalling all corned beef from its budget range after traces of the veterinary drug phenylbutazone were found in some batches. ...

... The painkilling medicine often used on horses is commonly known as "bute".

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said it was the first time bute had been found in a meat product in the UK since the horsemeat scandal started.

Animals treated with bute are not allowed to enter the food chain because the drug could pose a risk to human health.

However, the risk is very low even if people have eaten contaminated horsemeat. ...

And what else?

How (not so) long ago were the foot-and-mouth and "mad cow" disease scandals?...

Is the next going to be with "GM" food and whatever associated agri-business chemical?

Martin

Monsanto vs. Mother Earth

It’s unbelievable, but Monsanto and Co. are at it again. These profit-hungry biotech companies have found a way to exclusively ‘own’ something that freely belongs to us all -- our food! They’re trying to patent away our everyday vegetables and fruits like cucumber, broccoli and melons, forcing growers to pay them and risk being sued if they don’t. ...

Meanwhile, another 'sliming' in the making, and the continued aftermath of an earlier Chinese very sadly fatal 'sliming':

US rice imports 'contain harmful levels of lead'

Analysis of commercially available rice imported into the US has revealed it contains levels of lead far higher than regulations suggest are safe. ...

... by a factor of 120 [times safe limits]. ...

Lead is known to be harmful to many organs and the central nervous system.

It is a particular risk for young children, who suffer significant developmental problems if exposed to elevated lead levels. ...

... they irrigate their crops with raw sewage effluent and untreated industrial effluent," he explained.

"Research has been done in those countries, and concerns have been raised because of those practices, but it's still ongoing."...

That is one worrisome nightmare in the making that is causing quite a stir:

The situation is dire already -- Monsanto alone owns 36% of all tomato, 32% of sweet pepper and 49% of cauliflower varieties registered in the EU. With a simple regulatory change, we could protect our food, our farmers and our planet from corporate control -- and it's up to us to make it happen:

Amazingly, the USA appears to be legislating to encourage more slime and suffering:

US animal activist laws 'may impact globally'

... Because there is no single US federal law that protects animals, welfare investigators have played a significant role in bringing public attention to inhumane practices. ...

... However in Utah and Iowa the undercover recording of videos like these is now illegal. Several other states including Indiana, Arkansas and Pennsylvania are considering similar laws. Other provisions in these bills require prospective farm employees to disclose any link to animal welfare groups.

These regulations are already having an impact, says Cody Carlson, a former investigator who has documented inhumane activities on farms in several US states. ...

... "They want to make it look like their concern is animal abuse, but it is all part of the same deal which is to prevent ongoing investigations of the type that ended in the largest recall of beef in the history of the US," she said. ...

Only in the USA? Or will such distastefulness pollute the rest of the world?

All on our only planet,
Martin
