I finally got the Boinc screen saver running after a lengthy wait for downloads. Looks real pretty, lol. But then it started chirping at me like when you get windows error messages. Sure enough the screen saver stopped running. I saw a quick series of message boxes that disappeared too quickly to read and then a black screen. Moving the mouse restored my desk top.

One of the 24any.....tasks reports 'computation error'. Other 24any....tasks are ready for reporting. And a few tasks of other types are still 'running'.

Any ideas?

Another question...does the Boinc Manager need to remain active at all times when the computer is on or can it be exited? If exited will it wake up automatically when uploads or downloads are appropriate? When computer is turned back on will it wake up automatically?

Report the tasks. By reporting tasks they will show up in your list of tasks, plus what their outcome is. Any computation errors will show in the details of the task what could've caused the error.

BOINC Manager is the graphical user interface for the actual client (boinc.exe) which does all the downloading, scheduling of which project and tasks to run, keeps track of a multitude of values, etc.

Boincmgr.exe can be exited without problem (File->Exit, Uncheck "Stop running tasks when exiting BOINC Manager" and click OK. Then the client and the science applications will continue running in the background, doing downloads and all that.

BOINC should start automatically when you log in to Windows, but you can check teh status of that in BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Tools->Options - "Run Manager at login?" should be checked.
