Message 1210509 - Posted: 26 Mar 2012, 22:58:15 UTC - in response to Message 1210197.

Quick bit of news:

1. The 5 replacement drives our donors provided have arrived at SETI at home. Matt confirmed this morning that the drives check out and he's working on building a series of test RAIDS on the JBOD as you're reading this.

2. All of the components of Workstation 1 of 2 have arrived at the SETI offices. Matt has pieced Dan's machine together but is awaiting on the GPU which should arrive this afternoon. Leave it to Newegg to ship one of the smallest PC's on the market in 3 shipments from 2 coasts.

3. Workstation 2 of 2 has shipped. Tracking suggests all components should reach the SETI at Home offices on this week Thursday (3/29/2012). I'll let everyone know when it's on hand for the SETI team.

That's all I have for now guys. Please consider a donation toward our Hotswap/Transport drive fundraiser if you're able.

Message 1210964 - Posted: 28 Mar 2012, 10:29:36 UTC - in response to Message 1210557.

Catching up:

1. Dan's Workstation has been put together, OS loaded and is ready to go.

2. Workstation 2 of 2 will start arriving today and will wrap up on Thursday. Total of 4 packages for some reason.

3. We're working on another small fundraiser that will likely come forward this week. This fundraiser will be for computer peripherals and office supplies.

4. GeorgeM's RAID has been tested but not yet implemented. This should happen sometime soon and I'll be sure to update everyone when this happens. For reference this will be a 24 drive RAID array which will hold at least the download database and perhaps the upload database at a later date.

5. PaddyM is awaiting a new OS.

6. Bit of a correction and more Hard Drive news: I recently mentioned that 24 drives were at Green Bank collecting data. That's incorrect. Currently there are 20 drives at the GBT collecting data. These drives have all checked out. Interestingly one of the new drives we just sent to SETI has failed. For those keeping track out of the 50 total drives delivered, 6 were dead on arrival. That's a rather high number of failures.

Matt will be going through the replacement process with Seagate to get these drives replaced, however this development really hammers home the need for our 10 JBOD Hotswap drives fundraiser.

Message 1211902 - Posted: 30 Mar 2012, 14:07:32 UTC - in response to Message 1211881.

New Fundraiser is up.

This one is for QTY 3 Keyboards and QTY 3 Mice. SETI at Home has requested these items for the lab. We did go a bit overkill on these, however given the fact that they sit at the keyboard all day, we decided to get them quality components.

We're purchasing the following:

QTY 3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126043

And

QTY 3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104577

As always if you'd like to purchase these items for SETI at Home directly vs donating through the GPU Users Group, please don't hesitate to do so. You can contact me via gpuugbrad@gmail.com if you have any questions about this fundraiser.

Well that was a short fundraiser, maybe our shortest. Soft^Spirit went ahead and killed off the Keyboard/Mice fundraiser in one fell swoop!

All 6 peripherals are ordered from Newegg. You can track this order by visiting http://www.gpuug.org/purchases

More News:

Workstation 2:2 was delivered to SETI at Home on Thursday. Due to the holiday on Friday they haven't put her together yet but I'll be sure to let everyone know when they're set up. I'll also bug Matt for a picture so we can see the fruits of our donors labor.

We're still working on the Hotswap JBOD/Transport Hard Drive fundraiser, so if you have a few dollars available, please consider helping us out.

Thanks everyone!

Both the Keyboard and Mice are wired. Wireless is nice for freedom of movement but they eat batteries like it's cool.

Indeed they do. My HTPC mouse seems to eat a battery every 2-3 months. If the guys wanted wireless input devices I would think one of those large 24 pack of batteries would become a reoccurring fundraiser.

Also, wireless is not necessarily the best choice in open-plan offices, or labs with potentially high radio noise. I remember an office with three desktop computers and three desk sets - of the two-channel radio variety...

On the other hand, if they're the same model and age, you can have endless fun swapping them between desks as you leave the staff meeting.

Their requirements were pretty loose, so we took the liberty of getting them high quality equipment.

Bit of a news update:

1. PaddyM is configured and installed in the server closet.

2. The lab found an old 3ware card on a dead machine and are looking at using that (as it's currently an internal card) to connect Oscar to the JBOD via an external setup. It'll take a bit of fandangling but this may be a workaround for the HP proprietary issues we're bumping up against.

If this falls through (i.e. doesn't work) we'll see about purchasing an external 3ware card provided we can find a place for it to fit.

3. We may have another fundraiser coming soon which will improve throughput. Once I get the green light I'll set up a new fundraiser and let everyone know what we're up to.

4. Workstation 2/2 is put together but is awaiting the new keyboards/mice before implementation.

That's all I have for now guys. Please help us out on the Hotswap JBOD drives fundraiser if you're able by visiting http://www.gpuug.org/catalog

S@H Member Josef Segur just sent in a very generous donation which moves the Hotswap JBOD/Transport Drive fundraiser under the $1000 mark. If you can help us out, this fundraiser will go ricky tick. Thanks Josef!

The kitties are all ears on that one!!!

And, it shall be interesting to see if the single download server configuration shall put an end to the 'good server, bad server' behavior we have seen for downloads for soooooooooo long now.

Wishing the boyz the best of success in it's configuration and launch!

S@H asked us for a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816215061.

This device will: (excerpt from Matt's email)

This will allow us to use our already existing 3ware card/battery on paddym and connect it to the remaining side of the JBOD.

We went ahead and ordered this device using preexisting funds. The grand total for the order was:

Total Amount: $76.39

Just as a reminder to our Donors, small and quickly needed purchases like these come from our General fund donations.

You can track this purchase (once I put it on the website) by visiting http://www.gpuug.org/purchases

The green star issue has been covered in other message threads. Its a manual process. The GPUUG have given a list to Seti and its up to the project staff to apply them. Its out of the hands of the GPUUG.

As for moaning about Paypay, I used it yesterday (1st time using the iPad, normally I use my laptop). It asked for my email address again (when using laptop it normally defaults this) and of course password to log into Paypal. Apart from that it all worked fine for me.

Have you been able to make your donation, or do you still require assistance, my friend?
