Thanks for your hard work Brad. Green stars really should be strickly be for straight donation for Seti. It wouldn't do to have two donation letters go out for the same thing. How about a different color star for GPUUG donations. It wouldn't be hard to code I think.

On a side note. I know you mean well, but a third party should be in charge of awarding the stars. No conflict of interest then.

Two stars of different colors side by side sounds really good to me. One is linked to the conventional Seti pay site, and one is linked to GPUUG catalog and pay site.

Message 1226172 - Posted: 2 May 2012, 13:05:49 UTC - in response to Message 1225967.

MarkJ just sent in $300 to our general donation fund.

That really REALLY helps us out as an organization because it gives us discretionary funds. Sometimes the Lab needs X or Y ASAP and although our donors are very reliable and efficient during normal fundraisers, sometimes we end up wanting to purchase X or Y ASAP.

In the past we've used these funds to:

Buy 5 replacement hard drives so Matt could test the JBOD's raid in light of the massive Seagate drive failures we had.
Bought a SATA card.
Purchased Matt's keyboard (not vital, but small and not really worth setting up a fundraiser).
Battery backup for George's RAID card.

Okay enough rambling, I just wanted to thank Mark and all of our donors to the General fund.

FYI the RAID card should hit the offices today.

Then maybe someone who isn't a Mod should handle Seti's stars? Not meant as a slam but I think it's a logical follow-up to your post, Uli.

Maybe one person who isn't directly related in any position to either group should handle all star-related issues.

I'd take that role in a heartbeat.

The issue isn't on our end, it's getting the SETI guys to actually enter the figures we send them to award the stars. So far, nada.

What we need is either an automated system, or preferably access to a manual entry system where someone with the figures can enter them.

Mine have shown up in my account in the past few hours - all through my last on April 16.

Also, David (N9JFE) now has his green star...

If there's some way I can help on these pending the automated approach, let me know.

Message 1226578 - Posted: 3 May 2012, 6:22:02 UTC - in response to Message 1226486.

Quick updates:

1. The RAID card and battery backup were delivered today to the offices.

2. I begged Matt and he answered the call to help sort out the green star system. I'm not sure of the status of it currently, but we will be implementing an automated system for all donations to the GPUUG for green star awards. The caveat is that the person's email address on their paypal account has to be the same as the one they registered with on SETI. Provided they match, the award should be automatic.

3. Matt also went back and awarded all donors since Nov 2011 a green star provided their SETI and Paypal addresses match.

4. We're currently emailing back and forth trying to figure out a system to take care of donors whose email address may not match, or donate hardware directly, or donates via check/money order. We'll figure something out.

That's all I have for now guys. Thanks!

Hooray! I have my star! Therefore, I have dropped my ugly green star avatar. Maybe I'll find a less obnoxiouos avatar later.

Thank you to Brad and Matt!

Sorry for the delays guys. Some donors had to wait the better part of 6 months to get theirs which is unacceptable.

We SHOULD have it sorted here by week's end. Hat's off to Matt again for dropping what he was doing to work on this for us. He's a good guy.

While I appreciate the star, I hope he didn't drop anything *too* important to give it to me.

I first knew I had it when I went to My Account, hit END to express to the bottom, and Computers on this Account disappeared off the top of the screen. I studied the page for a moment to see what new material was there that wasn't before, and there was a bunch of stuff about donations. Yay!

Yeah, about all that stuff about donations... Total amount 483.770002365112. What currency are they figuring it in? :) Not that I care but thought it was funny.

That's a product of Paypal which takes out 3-4% per donation plus $0.40/donation which sometimes leaves us with trailing decimals.

Not much we can do about it and there's not really much to worry about except cosmetic issues.

Quick bit of news:

1. The RAID card and Battery Backup were delivered to the lab yesterday. Below is an excerpt from Matt's email sent on Thursday:

We did get the raid card, I already installed it (with the battery) and so far so good! We only have the 10 drives you recently obtained for us to play with at the moment, but the original 20 we loaned out to do observation at green bank will be in my hands next week I think.

He's referencing the 10 JBOD hotswap drives here as well as the 20 original (should be 21) drives for the back of the JBOD.

The above means the 10 JBOD Hotswap drives we've sent in should check out a-okay (no dead on arrivals) and also suggests to me that they may need more transport drives specifically slated for Green Bank. I'll check in on that and see.

The above also tells us that the Paddy - RAID - JBOD connection WORKS! This is excellent news and I hope our donors feel very proud knowing that they've helped the lab take a BIG step forward by funding this.

2. This bit of news is more interesting than anything but here's another cut from Matt's email on Thursday:

By the way I also am still using my old Sun monitor in conjunction with the new Asus monitor to create a two-headed system on my desktop. It's nice to have several windows off to the side and therefore less distracting. Dan saw this setup and wanted me to do the same on his new desktop, so now we have two two-headed systems in our group. Moving on up!

I do believe our donors have created a monster.

3. That's all we really have right now. My attempts at begging for work didn't go anywhere so we're at a bit of a stand still at the moment. We have one potential large fundraiser but we're still waiting on them to provide us the specs.

Thanks everyone.

LOL...it brings much joy to my heart to see that da boyz in da lab are enjoying some of their new toys!

And it must make them happy that some folks care enough to give them some things that may not be an absolute necessity, but should make their endeavors a bit more pleasant.

They certainly do deserve it.

Matt's desk hosts a new:
1. Shuttle
2. 24" Monitor
3. Microsoft Ergo Keyboard
4. Logitech Gaming Mouse
5. Paper organizer (heh)

All of the above were provided by our donors. I think the only thing his desk doesn't have on it is an espresso machine.
