Well they always need a couple more hours on the paychecks too. And I am pretty sure what we have sent them so far are giving them plenty to work on, although hopefully easier to maintain.

New Fundraiser

This fundraiser will be for an additional RAID controller which has become necessary to connect the JBOD to PaddyM. This RAID card will also feature a battery backup and is a mirror to the current RAID card that's working on GeorgeM.

The sooner we get this one knocked out, the sooner we can get PaddyM up and running.

Here are the two items that comprise this fundraiser:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816118143

And attached battery backup http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816118118

You can donate to this fundraiser by visiting http://www.gpuug.org/catalog

Thanks everyone.

So you're getting this somewhere else than Newegg?

Yessir as they have the item deactivated. Good news is lots of vendors have them available on the net for pretty competitive prices.

Dunno. The lab asked for:

1. We would like to go ahead and ask for another 9750-4i4e (w/ battery) like you suggest.
(Excerpt from Matt's email)

So we'll provide the 9750-4i4e version with battery backup. I'm in favor of this as this version, which is currently in GeorgeM, is working perfectly to connect George to the JBOD.

Wow guys.

Speedbump, Tbret, Christoph and Bob went ahead and kicked this thing out of the park this Sunday.

I'll get the parts ordered on Monday and will pay to have them shipped express (out of the general fund) so the Lab can hopefully get Paddy up and running this week.

You can track this purchase by visiting http://www.gpuug.org/purchases.

Thank you very much guys, as usual I'm impressed by our donors and honored to be a part of this program.

You are a fund raising machine!

$34823.19 in direct hardware for SETI (i.e. servers and components)
$4515 in SETI Direct funds.
~$1000 to the General Fund (our operating fund)
4 donated hard drives

When I started this venture with our group of Directors/Officers, one of the reasons I did so was in response the people who complained that they wanted to donate to SETI in a more direct fashion, i.e. hardware and whatnot but didn't have a viable venue.

I honestly never expected we'd be this successful in such a short time.

In truth, all we do is give our donors another venue to help SETI at Home. They're the rock stars of the concert, we're just the guys who drive the van.

Thanks again everyone.

RAID + Battery ordered though I don't have tracking yet. When it comes through you can track this purchase by visiting http://www.gpuug.org/purchases.

No word yet from the SETI guys about the gear they received today, I'll reply when I hear something.

Message 1225564 - Posted: 1 May 2012, 1:17:07 UTC - in response to Message 1225503.

Today's News:

1. Matt's Keyboard was delivered and he sends his thanks. Check out http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=67891 You can also see one of the new monitors our donors provided as well as one of the mice.

2. The lab got a kick out of the paper organizers we sent them. From what I understand certain unnamed members of the Lab threw Holy water on the organizers once they were unboxed and quickly retreated from the room.

3. I'm slated to call the guys tomorrow to suss out a few details for upcoming projects/ideas. Like my SETI crunching brethren I too have to beg for work on occasion.

4. It appears likely that PaddyM's planned roles may be changing. I'm not sure where this leaves us in regards to download/upload functionality. This is one thing I'll be asking about tomorrow.

5. The new RAID card and battery backup have been ordered. The battery component has shipped but I haven't received tracking for the RAID card. At any rate both are now up on http://www.gpuug.org/purchases.

That's all for now, more to come tomorrow.

Message 1225895 - Posted: 1 May 2012, 23:01:05 UTC - in response to Message 1225564.

The RAID card and battery should make it to the SETI labs tomorrow (Wednesday).

Bit more news:

1. We're mostly in a holding pattern while the guys figure out what needs to go where.

2. Eric Jeff and Matt have set up their new monitors. All 3 have sent in their thanks. Our donors did good with this one.

3. I asked Matt to clarify what they were planning to do with the two new servers and here's what I got back:

georgem: new download server (replacing vader/anakin) and perhaps new upload server (replacing bruno)
paddym: new compute server
jbod: 24 drives attached to georgem, 21 drives attached to oscar (science database server)

Since oscar's raid can't attach to the jbod, the plan is now to put a raid card in paddym, and try to make that the science database server, and oscar the compute server. Really just a minor swap, as both machines are quite similar in power/memory.

There also has been a bit of swapping about of RAM in order to make the most out of X or Y machine they intend to do A or B jobs. The above quote outlines the current plan of attack.

That's all I have for now. Once we get the servers sorted I'll be bugging Matt et al to get me a better Green Star awarding system.

Thanks guys.

Thanks for your hard work Brad. Green stars really should be strickly be for straight donation for Seti. It wouldn't do to have two donation letters go out for the same thing. How about a different color star for GPUUG donations. It wouldn't be hard to code I think.

On a side note. I know you mean well, but a third party should be in charge of awarding the stars. No conflict of interest then.
