Bit of an update: 1. The JBOD Hotswap / Transport drives have shipped. You can follow the tracking by visiting http://www.gpuug.org/purchases 2. I talked with Eric this morning and we're lining up a few new projects. One of them, once approved will be a fairly large project but should significantly help with the dropped connections issue we're seeing. 3. We're also in the planning stages of a larger project which will significantly improve throughput between the Lab and the crunchers. I can't say much about this one currently however I'm very excited. 4. For now we don't have any projects to work on however we may end up with one or two projects by weeks end pending a bit of testing at the Lab. One of these tests involves the SATA connector (which arrived on Monday) to see if it's backwards compatible between the JBOD and the salvaged 3Ware card. If it turns out not to be compatible, we'll end up purchasing a new 3Ware card. Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |

New Fundraiser: SETI at Home has been running on hobbled together hardware for entirely too long. As many of you may have seen, here's an example of some of the monitors they have in the office. As a result we would like to supply the office with QTY 4 brand new Asus 24" LCD monitors. The 24" monitors will allow the scientists to have two full 12" documents on screen at once on one monitor and in general will make their lives spent behind a desk working for the project much better. Also, NKOL http://www.nkol.net is purchasing these monitors for us on a Cost + 10% basis which will save this fundraiser quite a bit of money. To donate to this new project please visit http://gpuug.org/content/setihome-asus-24-lcd-monitors _____________________________________________________ Current Projects: ASUS 24" Monitors - Raised $0 : Remaining $986.00 Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |

Which Model? Or is that need to know? :) I'm sorry Bill I meant to post that information. http://www.asus.com/Display/LCD_Monitors/VE248H/ Those are the monitors we're after. I've got the same model sitting on my desk at home and it's a damn fine monitor. Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |

Which Model? Or is that need to know? :) Just so's ya know, Newegg has these right now for $204.99 with free shipping. And Tiger's at $189.99, but freight not included. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Which Model? Or is that need to know? :) Ha! Of course they'd drop the price on them after I got a quote. We'll re-work the total and buy from Newegg to save our donors money. ETA looking like the new total will be $911.41 plus Paypal fees should put us around $949 total. Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |

Of course you will have to wait and see who will have the best price once the funds are raised. Yep but for the most part we're looking at $900ish and up for all 4. Once we get near that figure I'll start searching around again for the best deals. I'm all about making our donor's dollars go as far as we can stretch them. Okay we've updated the website to reflect better pricing on the monitors and Fred has sent in a bit to get us started. You can donate toward this campaign by visiting http://www.gpuug.org/catalog __________________________________________________ Current Projects: QTY 4 ASUS 24" Monitors For SETI at Home : Raised - $35, Remaining - $914. Amazon: $179 with "free super saver" shipping. Hey, $35 x 4 is almost enough for a 5th monitor. Right? /EDIT Okay, I goofed. It's been a long day. $25 x 4, not $35, and the sum is only 5/9ths of a fifth monitor. |

Add in CA tax and you're looking at a bit less, plus 4% for Paypal fees plus $0.30 per donation and it gets a bit closer. When we get near the $900 mark I'll start shopping around for the best deal at the time. The lab really only needs 4 monitors: Dan Jeff Eric and Matt. David and Andrew use laptops though I suppose they could use an extra monitor for the extra lab machine (for Eric when he's up in the lab or visitors/students). With that said they do have one or two new grad students coming in the summer which may require new machines/peripherals. I'm not sure about this last bit yet. Oh, I know you will do what you can do when it's time to do it. I didn't mean to be guilty of premature shopping. ...and yeah, I understand that there are "fees and expenses." UNLESS, of course, someone just wants to do a hardware purchase and have it shipped to the lab. |

True, all we care about is getting X to the SETI offices, I don't really care how we go about it. We're working on a system to simplify the hardware donation feature on the website. In the future we'll have a simple checkout system where the donor can add (in this instance) a monitor to their cart, check out and pay for it with a donation at which time we'll purchase the item and ship it to SETI. The benefit for the donor here is that his/her donation is tax deductible vs simply buying it for SETI at Home and shipping to them. I'm not sure when we'll get this implemented, but I'd think we'll have it together in a week or two at most. Executive Director GPU Users Group Inc. - brad@gpuug.org |

Laptops are fine, but if you're working on one in an office you'll find H&S recommends the use of external keyboard + monitor. On a laptop you slump too much looking down to the screen and bad posture leads to back problems... Try to convince David he needs a 24" screen too. and maybe bigger screen == bigger looking bugs == fixing bugs I'm not the Pope. I don't speak Ex Cathedra! |
