Message 1208452 - Posted: 21 Mar 2012, 15:02:27 UTC

I've joined the Seti@Home team. Hello everyone. I have a computer I can pretty much dedicate to this. Windows 7.

I've downloaded the Bionic Manager, chosen Seti. But it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Tasks/progress says 0.00%. Progress status says Communication deferred.

I don't know if it's downloading anything actively or not, or waiting for something, or some parameter not set right.

Ideas?

Every Tuesday, the Seti project goes down for several hours to do maintenance. When they return all of the computers which have been trying to report and fetch work during those off hours will try to do this reporting and fetching, which clogs up the connection. The project only has a 100Mbit connection to work with, which is easily overworked.

As such it can take a couple of hours for work to download and be in progress. I see that you got work appointed, which may still be in the process of being downloaded. Just have patience, it'll get there eventually. Don't abort work or detach from the project to reattach, that won't get you work any faster.

That is because the connection is still saturated.

Green is outgoing to us and the blue line is what we are returning.

When it is up that high, it will be tough to get work downloaded.

This delay happens every week beginning on Tuesdays? I just now downloaded Seti@home and was wondering why nothing is happening.

I ran Seti@home back in 2001 but this new version is a lot different. Do I need to keep the BOINC manager active till I get a task? I looked for 1-2-3 step by step instructions on the website but didn't find any.

Yes, maintenance is done weekly on Tuesday morning Berkeley time, and lasts 4-6 hours, followed by comm. saturation as all the users report their work and try to download new work. The logjam can last upwards of 48-72 hours, depending on several variables.

If you're able, just let BOINC run; when it can snag some S@H work, it will. Right now, there may be some other forces impacting work availability. Some users are running out and can't grab new work.

No, only the BOINC client needs to run. The manager is only the Graphical User Interface (GUI). You'll have to make sure though that the client isn't stopped automatically when you stop the manager.

Good morning. I've downloaded the Bionic Manager, chosen Seti. The Bionic screen came up and continually said downloading from server. This morning it reads "error...no work available to process". Hit pause button and it reads "Processing suspended...User paused processing". The dots scroll across box during this. Hit resume and I get error message again. Can someone help me? Using Windows 7. Thanks.

We all have the problem at this time that we aren't getting work. Something broke at the project and we'll have to wait until someone gets into the office. It's only 8:51 in the morning over there, the people are only just entering the office. The project isn't manned 24/7, as they don't have the man-power nor the money for that.

So patience it is, or add other projects to BOINC to do some other science and fill in the waiting gap.

Yesterday was Tuesday. The servers are off for maintenance on Tuesdays. Everyone gets to stand in line for tasks on Wednesday and sometimes Thursday.

And what's the error message in question?
For which BOINC version?
On what Windows version?

Hey guys, I just downloaded BOINC yesterday and I am trying to run it on 2 different computers (my home and office computers). I read the posts above and I am having the same problem as the first guy mentioned; download speeds are slower than the 28.8K modem i had 15 years ago..less than 1Kpbs most times, and most downloads say "retry in ....".

So I read your responses to that I understand the servers are just clogged and they will eventually download, but I have a different question. Once the downloads to complete, will the "work" on my computer be affected by the slow speeds on the server, or will my computers be able to harness their potential once the slow downloads complete? Thanks.

I have a very very fast connection and 1 decent computer and another one that is a $5k gaming computer (alienware) that is extremely fast, so i hope i am able to contribute to this project when I get running... I may dig up some of my older computers that are in storage and see if I can dedicate them completely to SETI @ home as well.

Regards,

Yanivicious

slow speeds downloading will not affect how your work runs on your computers.

You mentioned office computers. Be warned do not use office computers for S@H without permission. Obviously, if its your office then by all means indulge

It says:
1. BOINC manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client. Would you like to connect again?
2. The BOINC client has exited unexpectedly 3 time within the last 14 minutes. Would you like to restart it again?
I Downloaded BOINC 6.12.34 for Windows 64-bit (8.55 MB)
