One of my biggest issues regarding "the right person to do the job". The
best person may not always be the one that is from the party/parties ruling
at the time. People from outside politics should be selectable for some of
these ministerial jobs especially if their credentials far outstrip those of
any current M.P's available from within the government or the opposition parties.

Parliament/Government

You cannot become a Government Minister of any kind without first being an elected and serving MP. What however can happen and does, is that a prominent businessman or woman, or a notable Academic, can be appointed as a "Government advisor" to take advantage of their expertise.

There are Peers that are Government Ministers, these are unelected, for instance The Leader of the House of Lords. I believe that currently this is the only such unelected Government Minister, though there have been other Secretaries of State selected from the House of Lords in the recent past.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

The last time we had this was just after WW2. The government then bought in
the NHS and built houses, on a massive scale fit for our boys. Labour started
this all off and the Conservatives took it over a few years later. Had our
current collection of government ministers been in power back then - then we
would still be waiting for it all to happen still today. Politicians seem not
to have the caliber that those politicians of yester-year had, to me they seem
wanting today.

Actually, in the US we have compassionate conservatism, -- it is much of the Democratic Party.

As for me, I'm a Republican:

I advocate the following:

Barry Goldwater's position regarding Planned Parenthood
Robert Dole's position on health care
Romney 2006's position on health care and gay rights
Ronald Reagan's tax rates by the end of his 2nd Term
Richard Nixon's position on birth control access
George Romney's views on education

I list those often enough to annoy some of my Republican friends <smile>

Chris, let's bring back compassionate conservatism. <smile>

Well why not? Would give us all a chuckle during the summer recess.

All you can do is just shake your head. Clearly we're living through the
dark ages of politicians, dam it, will someone come and rescue us.

OI, Del-Boy, are you just a blood sucking politician or a genuine leader out ot do his best for the country?

If the latter, then start by getting the PC Brigade out of the armed forces!

This is absolutely disgusting!

I wonder if there isn't more to this than is being reported. No-one wants to hear of soldiers beating up captives to gain information, neither do we want captives escaping without finding out what information they do have. All seems a bit odd to me.

The armed forces manage their own recruitment and promotions, not on Camerons brief. Geneva Conventions dictate rules of engagement.

Nope no more to it, at leat from the para's point of view. I have an inside source on this & the report is correct. Also, there have been similar situations where serving soldiers have been forced to resign or face court martials. It's absolutely disgusting!

Think it is about time the politicans wake up & realise that their continued journey on the gravy train will come back to bite them in the ass.....

...that is unless someone with the courage steps up to the plate & stops all this.....

No "Daily Rag" sensationalism here, but the accepted news channel of many

..however, can't see Del-boy being one of them!

OK, lets be practical here. Yes, this "arrangement" has gone on for a long time, it is not right, and of course it is only proper that it has been highlighted and that it should be stopped. But as quoted above, this needs to be done with forethought and planning, and not as a rush measure to satisfy the braying media.

The taxpayer needs to get the best value for money out of this, and that will probably be best achieved, by scrapping the existing rules forthwith, and robustly getting rid of the existing workers on this type of contract, as soon as is possible.

Ah right, let's do this in a right & proper manner! Just cancel all the contracts with massive payoffs while the country is suffering from what could be the worst recession since the "depression days"

How succulent of the BBC to highlight this issue now.....bit of "tabloid sensationalism" don't you think!

That would not be a very sensible way to go about solving the problem, now would it? The situation has been highlighted, and I would be very surprised if there were not many lightbulbs burning at various Ministries over the holiday weekend.
