Message 1205325 - Posted: 13 Mar 2012, 3:01:33 UTC

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.
I'm using the latest version of Bonic.
I have the latest Nvida drivers.
nvida.com says this has CUDA, as does a gpu monitor.
It has 512mb of memory.
But I'm not getting Seti gpu WU's, in fact, right now I'm not getting any Seti
WU.
I know the 310M is wimpy, but it's all I have. What's wrong?

Can you post the first 20 lines of the event log.

It might be that you installed BOINC in protective application mode and that does not allow BOINC to see the GPU's in the machine.

His laptop hasn't even contacted the servers since Sunday.

There isn't any GPU listed on his system info, so the install method is a likely culprit.

That bolded item means that you did install in protective application mode.

To enable the GPU, you will need to uninstall BOINC and then reinstall and select advanced options and uncheck the protective application option.

Thanks for all the help! After a lot of pain uninstalling BONIC and reinstalling, I'm now getting SETI cuda WU's.

My next question is GPU utilization. I'm using a monitor and it says only 1% is being utilized. It seems like it should be more. I have one instance of SETI running.

Also, do you know how fast I should be getting a WU done on my 310M. Seems like it's running about 10 hours per WU, that seems very slow.

Someone with programming/application knowledge will have to help you here, because even though you're running CUDA apps, they are falling back to the CPU. From your log of one completed WU:

setiathome_CUDA: device 1 is emulation device and should not be used, supports 9999.9999
setiathome_CUDA: CUDA Device 1 specified, checking...
Device cannot be used
SETI@home NOT using CUDA, falling back on host CPU processing

EDIT: A little research suggests that it might be a driver issue. many have had problems with 295.73. You might want to fall back to (IIRC) 285.62

The default setting for BOINC is to use the GPU when the computer is idle. You'll have to adjust your preferences to be able to use the GPU when the computer is in use. However, be aware that the 295.73 Nvidia drivers will switch off CUDA capability once the monitor goes to sleep. So don't use those.

And then there's that matter of your amount of memory. Since this GPU is one that's using shared memory from your main memory, you're hampering things by using 8 cores on your i7 (4 real cores + 4 hyper threading cores) plus the GPU. You only have 4GB of memory, which means that at the best of times, you may have 512Mb per core, less even when you tell the GPU to use some.

On top of that, I see you are trashing all your CPDN models, probably due to them running into that same problem of not having enough memory. Either add more memory (it's not that expensive), or don't run this many work, or tell BOINC to use only 4 CPU cores, or at least less than 8 so you're relatively sure that all work and your GPU can really use 512MB of memory.
