	Hi folks, Big things are afoot! I spent the morning today assembling all of the parts for the new Astropulse/NTPCKR and Download servers. Thank you to all the generous donors who made this purchase possible! Check out the photos here! The machines will be shipping out tomorrow and should arrive at the S@H offices in a few days. You can check their progress and tracking info on this page. Don't expect immediate changes to the project though; it will take some time for the S@H staff to install everything, get the software configured, do some stability testing and finally migrate everything over. Keep your eyes open for updates as things progress. And finally, I would like to offer a special "Thank You" to Graham Middleton whose more-than-generous donations made the purchase of these machines possible in a far shorter time frame than we anticipated. Any special reason for the physical arrangement of the populated DIMMs? And my own preference for cooling fans is for them to be used in push-pull combinations so as not to force too high a pressure differential rather than to have them bunched together as a 'double boost' fan... That lot must sure as hell be noisy! The machines will be shipping out tomorrow and should arrive at the S@H offices in a few days. You can check their progress and tracking info on this page. It does look kind of odd, but the 5500/5600 series Xeon processors require a minimum of three DIMMs per CPU, so you can have four but not two. One machine has 9 slots per CPU with 96GB installed (6x16GB) and the other has 12 slots per CPU with 128GB installed (8x16GB.) The Intel machine has an insane number of fans in it, and it's incredibly loud. I was staggered by the sound and how much air moved through it so I hope no one has a desk anywhere near it at the installation location. Normally I will see 6, 8, or 12 per CPU for a dual Xeon board. 9 makes sense, but it is just kind of rare I think. Luckily the guys have a closet where their racks live. However I bet that closet can be heard form a great distance as it is. Maybe this one will make that area a required hearing protection zone. lol I was playing around with some new, to me, servers at work recently. Since I was just starting to populate a new rack without much weight to it. The Intel system has 6 slots per CPU and can take up to 96GB. The Supermicro has 9 per and can take up to 288GB.
