Ok this Pi is not for eating, it is a small cheap computer for schools. An attempt to try and get back to the days of the Sinclair and the BBC computers, and get kids programming. Raspberry Pi |

They were just trying to work out 'cost per flop' comparisons in the BOINC forums - though I think it was a bit misleading to compare component costs with the whole-computer price of the Pi. |

They were just trying to work out 'cost per flop' comparisons in the BOINC forums - though I think it was a bit misleading to compare component costs with the whole-computer price of the Pi. Component costs can vary considerably with quantity. They probably worked out the cost based on small buys used in development, not the price it would cost during manufacture, when quantities would be in thousands. One has to note that the cost quoted today is 50% higher than the figure quoted when the story first broke severl months ago. But I believe they have added several more i/o's since then. |

I guess that is the same basic conversation that we were having here about using smartphones to process data. As this board uses one of the same processors that goes in smartphones. These little SOC boards normally cost a lot more, in $100-200 range. This sounds more like one of those BASIC Stamp boards that I tinkered around with in school.
