Are we able to edit our own posts?

The reason I ask is because I thought I might take some time and create some sigs that people can use if they so choose, and figured I would start the post and then just edit my initial post and keep adding in new ones.

But from what I can see, that ability is not allowed for regular forum users, is that correct?

You can edit your own posts for 1 hour after you post them --then you lose the ability.

You can edit a post for one hour after you first post it. After that it is locked. I think the time limit is silly and I've asked for at least 3 or 4 hours before, but to no avail. If you suddenly spot a spelling mistake 30 seconds after posting, and edit it, tough, there will be a message displayed "last modified ......"

But I guess the Admins are too busy on more important stuff, and fair enough, but it is an irritation.

(see above)

The time limit is there, cause of the forum being a part of the database, which has something to do with it, what I don't know, but others would know better, as I think they'd like to lock it down as quickly as they can.

The time limit is there because some people abused the right to edit their posts forever in the past.

There were two distinct kinds of abuses.

1) Obscenity - but edited out when banned, which led to a long argument about whether it was done in the first place.

2) We have had a couple of people leave in a huff and either delete all their messages (which tended to ruin the flow of the threads) or post obscenities in all of the posts - which then had to be hidden one at a time by an admin (at the time there were no volunteer moderators).

Thus a time limit on editing posts.

My friends.......all is committed to the memory of the great host on high. That is to say, that which shall never forget.

If some of you do not know by now, the advanced search feature shall now allow you access to all of my posts by command........or sears, as it were.

Advanced search.

Thanks for the reply, I figured that might be it.

I have run a few forums, infact have one going right now on one of my site, and I am just used to archiving some of the offending posts for proof and then mass deleting the rest of the posts, with a good ole ban stick in the backside for final measure, to take care of unruly folks.

So I understand the frustration in regards to forums and those "not so nice" types. Then add into that the wonderful spambots that pop up here ad there and create account, keeps a forum admin reallll busy!!

Thanks for all you folks do, it can become a job and a half to moderate and admin a forum like this.

Not sure what software you all are using, but one suggestion might be if possible create a "group" with special permissions that allow editing ones posts. The criteria could be xxxx posts puts them in that group automatically. Say for instance 1,000 or more posts. Cause normally if someone has that kind of post count in an online forum, they are usually someone that is not just active, but playes by the rules. Just a thought...

Keep up the good work!

The software is homegrown. Things like this have been discussed, but have never bubbled to the top of the todo list.

Believe it or not, most of the offenders have had large post counts. More to the point would be X posts in a row not deleted for (list) of reasons and Y posts and Z time since the last banishment or account creation. Note that deletion for double post or user request should not count against someone.

As an element of flexibility, if possible:

Have editing, after the 1hr time-limit, be on a request-basis, with
the moderator. Perhaps, this already exists, I don't know.

I enter poems, in "Dan's Poetry Corner" -- a well-run operation (Hat's
off, to Dan.), but, on occasion, an edit is needed to a poem, after the time limit. Note: Have not mentioned this idea, to date, to Dan.

Does this strike a responsive cord, with folks?

I think under extreme circumstances, some fiddling might be possible after the 1 hour limit. But I would not count on that as something generally available.

FWIW, the moderators and administrators cannot modify your posts.

Well different forum software allows for editing by moderators - it of course shows who edited the post.

Here, moderators can't edit other people's posts and non-mods can only edit up to one hour later.

After that the only workaround is to ask for the old post to be hidden and to write a new one.

When administrators and moderators have that ability, you have to be able to trust them implicitly.

I have helped set up and run several forums over the years, some pretty active and others not so active. And always allowed the ability of "administrators" to edit posts, and pretty much do everything that an "owner" could. Moderators were a bit different matter though, I never gave them the ability to edit posts, but they could lock them, archive them, move them etc...

In my eyes, if someone is given certain abilities (i.e. administration) you have to trust them to the Nth degree, and if you can not, they should not be put in that position to start with.

Have you all looked into using something like SMF for the forums? It gives a really nice layout, and a lot of nice functionality not only on the user side but also on the administrative side of things.

Hope I am not stirring up some sort of hornets nest here, and reigniting any old flames out there. Just trying to figure everything out here.. :)

So if I am poking my nose in where it does not belong, just tell me to be quiet.

I have no complaints about the forums.
Functionality, administration, and moderation are all just fine by me.

Root has the ability to change anything, but root may not have a nice web interface to do it.
