Hey Alex, you're not depending on this to enhance your Independence claim are you, or hoping that it'll do for Scotland what the Olympics did for Britain?

If you are, got bad news for you...it won't work!

If you are, got bad news for you...it won't work!

Britain comprises England & Wales, Great Britain comprises England, Wales and Scotland. During the 2012 Summer Olympics, Team GB also included 20 athletes from Northern Ireland. Scottish athletes won seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

I was one of the local volunteers and Stewards for the 2012 Olympics, and covered the Torch relay, both cycling road races, and the cycling time trial. Seeing Bradley Wiggins go through the town at full pelt on his way to the Gold medal was a special moment. Since then like all volunteers, I got a thank you letter from the PM, I also got allocated a place at the Olympic parade in the Mall, and also attended a recognition ceremony at our Guildhall hosted by the Mayor, It's been a privilege to be part of it all.

The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow during 2014 will be a wonderful opportunity for anyone who is able to volunteer to help, and already almost a quarter of adults in Scotland have expressed an interest in volunteering, according to research carried out for the organisers. I would urge anyone who is able to volunteer to do so, it will be a fabulous experience. Scotland last hosted these games in 1970 and 1986, so it might be many years before it is held again north of the border.

Go for it!

So you're endorsing their independance then.....

..oh well, soon england will be a piddling little country surrounded by nations that don't like them.

I did not say that, nor did I infer that. I support Scotland staying within the Union, because I think it will be in their best interests as well as the rest of the UK. Oh and by the way it's spelt independence.

..oh well, soon england will be a piddling little country surrounded by nations that don't like them.

I cannot immediately see what that has to do with an Independent Scotland, but that's typical of the sort of pejorative comment that we have come to expect from you these days. I assume that soon you will be moving house then, as I'm sure you wouldn't want to live in a place that was so triflingly diminutive and beneath you.

The Welsh don't mind us, Sirius. The Welsh assembly are looking at over 100,000
English commuting into Wales to work if Wales was to gain independence. They
want this lot over because of the skills they have. So it seems to me that the
Welsh will be looking at least for a working love affair.

The Welsh assembly could increase its powers in the future and may one day evolve into a body similar to the Scottish Parliament.

In February 2010, assembly members voted in favour of holding a referendum on devolving further powers from Westminster. This motion must now gain approval from both Houses of Parliament.

You have to realise Nick that Sirius is not really interested in the future of either Scotland or Wales. He is just looking for excuses to make denigrating comments about England.

I'm looking forward to it happening!

Too many ingerlanders moan & castigate those who show the country's dirty linen in public rather than go out of their way to prevent it happening in the 1st place. you are the most prolific of them!

I'm here to stay along with the other 5 million foreigners....

...won't be long now...

You cannot see what that had to do with an independentScotland? It was in reply to your crass comments about the games....you created an Olympic thread so should have followed suit on the Commonwealth Games rather than invest this thread with your trivia.

28 million tourists visited England alone in year 2011, must like us a lot.
The total for the whole of the UK that year was 31 million a ratio of 10 to 1.
So 9 out of every 10 people in the world prefer the English to either the
Welsh or the Scottish. So who cares if 12 million Welsh & Scott's don't like
us, going by the tourism ratio above, it seems that 6.5 billion people in
this world don't like either of you two....better start making friends, I'd say.

Er? got anything to do with 'just being in-bedded in their gene structure'?
If Wales was to gain independence then no doubt Brussels will carry out a
study of, 'Why do most Welsh men have such great singing voices'.
Eire, wonder if Brussels has yet thought about a study on Irish dietary habits,
'Why do the Irish eat so many spuds'
England, 'Why do so many English girls dye their hair blond'
UK, 'Why do they not want to be part of the ECM'..or have they done this one
already but refuse to publish it's findings?

Firstly the Scottish DNA Project is not a wasted one, it is giving valuable, useful, and a fascinating insight into peoples genealogy. The project will continue, and independence will have no bearing on the matter. DNA project

@Nick

Love the Freudian slip, I assume you mean embedded?

Why do most Welsh men have such great singing voices'.

It is from the cultural tradition of Eisteddfods and folk music which stems back to Celtic times. It is given great emphasis in Wales, which encourage the male voice choirs etc.

Eire, wonder if Brussels has yet thought about a study on Irish dietary habits, 'Why do the Irish eat so many spuds'

Please be careful here, remember the mid 19th century.

Why do so many English girls dye their hair blond'

Probably because subconsciously, blonde hair is an indicator of youth. All women want to be/look young, and traditionally because men are attracted to young women. Some dye their hair because their natural color is unattractive, or doesn't really work with their skin tone.

I think we are into a bit of stereotyping here Nick! What next, Essex girl jokes?

Doubt it very much as if Independence is achieved, there won't be much employment available & that will cause the project to die... £200 cost for men & £170 for women.... can't see Jocks wasting that on a history project as their beer comes 1st.

Nothing new there then as you Sassenachs are world famous for stereotyping.

Was a slip but I think I'll stick with it just for the laugh in it.

Stereotyping, no for Brussels started this first with the red heads.
Brussels wont be able to do a study on our Essex girl jokes until first carrying
out a study on British humour first. Once this latter study has been completed
and Brussels then understands what British sense of humour is all about they'll
end up looking at themselves then.....burst out laughing.

....lovely satire again....
