Message 1189858 - Posted: 29 Jan 2012, 21:19:53 UTC

I tried to claim my old classic s@h credits, and logged into my present Boinc a/c for s@h, put in my old BT email address and pressed ok..
Got response that my old BT email addy was in current use!!

Pretty damm strange because my old email a/c was created by me and its not a bog standard name prefix to btinternet.com either..

So is it possible that somehow its been hijacked?
I'd have tried logging into it but I'm dammed if I can remember the p/w:-/

Not certain if anything can be done, but I am sending an email to the people that might be able to do something. They may require some convincing though.

Copy the exact response (editing out only to not show the email)

"
This will not work if:
Your SETI@home/BOINC account is already connected to a Classic account, or
Some other SETI@home/BOINC account is already connected to the Classic account
"

Meaning: If you ever used the old account for BOINC this will not work.

Message 1190082 - Posted: 30 Jan 2012, 15:04:52 UTC - in response to Message 1190078.

Hi
did that got the following.
This e-mail address (xxxxx_yyyyy@btinternet.com) belongs to an active BOINC account, so we can't transfer its credit to your account

I dont have any other boinc a/c, just the one I have now AFAIK.

Unless its possibly one I setup for BBC climate stuff... way back when,
BUT that shows credits on THIS a/c... and I certainly dont have any classic credits on this a/c...

Doing me mind in is this:-) Circular logic:-/

Your current account is this:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=8766616

Can you give us the link to your old account?

(I want to see two things on your old account:
1) Total credit 0 (if this is not zero - you can't merge the old and new accounts)
2) Computers: View -> Show: All computers (if any computers show - you can't merge the old and new accounts)
)

Message 1190106 - Posted: 30 Jan 2012, 16:22:46 UTC - in response to Message 1190082.

Back when Seti Classic went to become Seti (under BOINC) the Admins linked all the accounts at that time in the database from Classic to an account under BOINC. Which will have meant with any work you did at Classic, a BOINC account was already available for you to take and use when you returned.

However, it looks like when you returned in 2007, that you created a new account, not reactivated your old account. And as such, any of the Cliff in the UK accounts can be yours. Impossible for us to say which one.

Only one BOINC account can be linked to the the Seti Classic WUs.
Multiple BOINC accounts cannot be merged into one account, as the unique identifier is the email address.

Sorry dont have a link to the old a/c:-( Only way I know there still is one is that message I got when I entered my old email address.

Hell I dont even have the certificates anymore:-/ Gotten lost in transit I guess
Must created the classic a/c in the 90's sometime and for the life of me I cant remember the original dial up a/c I used..

Just remember having to pack in Climate Prediction after the changeover to boinc when I started to have hardware problems:-(

Didnt have a very good rig back then:-)

Hi Jord,
Yup, so I gathered, but that doesnt account for the existance of the BTInternet email address being 'in use' as such. I dont think I was using BTI but given the passage of time I cant be sure:-)

I've had my current email address [on my own domain] for some time and only created the BTI one when I got broadband from BT. IT was mainly a spam trap:-)
And usefull as a default email addy for S@H etc.

My missus used to be an ardent MU gamer, and she gathered spam like it was going out of fashion:-)

You are confusing things.

1) Climate Prediction (or any other project) can't have impact on your SETI account

2) The message was:
"This e-mail address (xxxxx_yyyyy@btinternet.com) belongs to an active BOINC account, so we can't transfer its credit to your account"

Where did you get impression that this info is somehow "for the existence of the BTInternet email address being 'in use' as such"?!

The message means: the account here that contains this string (email): "xxxxx_yyyyy@btinternet.com"
is BOINC account, not Classic account (= you used this old account sometime after ~2005)
(Do you remember when (year) did you first used BOINC?)

The 'email' is not email - it is just string used for real username.
E.g. sometime ago I created for test new account using 'email' of the form 999@555.333 and it works (despite no one can have such email)

Did you see the link in Ageless post which lists 4 users 'cliff'?
Was your old account under the name 'cliff' at that time?
Is this your old Computer?:

Hi BilBg,
CP work credits [1] are shown in my stats [2] created havok on my old PC hence then departure:-) Dead PC via overheating..

As for the email addy, since S@H uses an email addy for an a/c, that I get a msg telling me that such an a/c exists is an indication that there is an active or at any rate an existing a/c using that old email addy.. its seemingly 'in use' as far as S@H is concerned..

And yeah I get it that its a boinc a/c not a classic one:-)
As for when I first used boinc.. cant remember but 'assume' it was when S@H changed over to using boinc from classic S@H.. If that was 2k5 then that was the year:-)

Sorry havent seen the post you mention, but the link given is most certainly NOT to any computer of mine.. Every PC/PC clone I've ever used has been an AMD powered one.

Prior to those I used a BBC Model B and a Sinclair QL:-) Definately no intel powered kit at my end.. [too bleeding expensive:-)]

If that email address is still valid and accessible (by you), you could try not to create a new account with it but to log on to that account. There's a 'forgot password' link on the log-on screen.

The 'User search' is strange - why it not show the current 2007 account of cliff?

Try to search for 'cli' and only one result is shown??!:

Hi,
Found it!!!,
Those Cliff a/c's.... well the one on team TPMO has gotta be it, but it doesnt show any cpu/rigs ..

The TPMO is the giveaway:-) Stands for Tottenham Pyrenean Mail Only..
Which was my point ID in net 254[London] on FidoNet:-)) Way before the WWW
existed:-)

I used to point off Arkham BBS run by Nigel Hardy:-)
FidoNet provided netmail[email equiv] & Echomail [equiv to this medium] long before HTML at al led to the web.

Still cant access that TPMO a/c tho.. cant remeber the password, and I've tried a few I used to use, believe me:-)
not it has a few classic wu's not as many as I 'think' I had.... but WTH it was apparently 1999ish and theres been a lot of water under the bridge since then.

Hi,
Cant remeber the password, and I no longer have access to it since I left BTInternet quite a long time ago, so password reminder is out since it would just email that email addy and probably get bounced or blackholed. BT isnt exactly famous for getting user a/c's sorted out:-( particularly out of use a/c's

"but it doesnt show any cpu/rigs ..":
that is very good sign - it is Classic account

Don't try to log-in to it using any email/password combination - this will not work.
Read:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_classic.php

"When we launched SETI@home/BOINC, we created accounts for all SETI@home Classic users, with their existing email addresses. Each account includes the number of SETI@home Classic workunits completed, the CPU time, and the start date.
These accounts were not given passwords (i.e., they can't be accessed using any password)."

The only option is:

While you are log-in your current SETI@home Account (userid=8766616) go to this page:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_classic_link.php

Paste or type every email address you had ever, no need the email to be active (in existence)

If you don't remember it - you may try several until you find the one that was used.

If the email is 'wrong' you will see this message:
No Classic account exists with the e-mail address: sjkdfkjdngkjfdsnkjfdkjdf@zzz.yyy

(If the email is/was used by someone for BOINC you will see the familiar:
This e-mail address (xxxxxyyyyy@ZZZZZZ.com) belongs to an active BOINC account)

Hi,
I have absolutely no idea or any way of determining what that old email addy was:-( Hell on dialup I must have used a dozen or more 'free' service providers offering internet access or the like.

Thanks for all your assistance but this is going nowhere fast. That team TPMO a/c had 300 classic WU credits, its simply not worth any more time and effort to go round the bend after that number of credits or to have classic seti credits added to my stats:-)

Obliged to you for all the help.

Well Folks,
I guess I'm like a dog with a bone:-) Keep gnawing at it.
Turns out I used an alias to setup as founder of a team, put my name in[cliff] as a memeber for some reason.

Anyone interested try looking up Gianarth, a name I used for a personna on a MUG called Shades in the mid 1980's and into the 1990's:-)Before joining another MUG, Avalon I think it was at the time.

Seems the user Gianarth/Cliff has number 34048 allocated by S@H and there are 7,982 classic S@H credits done.
And the Computers shown are AMD Cpu ones:-) Cant see me ever accessing that old a/c which dates back to 5 December 2000 though.
No idea what the oassword was for the email addy.. been through every one I can thinl of:-)

Will just have to keep on having a go whenever it starts to niggle again:-)

Gianarth:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=34048

You can't in no way merge the above Gianarth account with your current one
because both are BOINC accounts.

"... there are 7,982 classic S@H credits done":
NO, classic never awarded credits - these are BOINC credits

Classic info is only this:
SETI@home member since 5 Dec 2000
SETI@home classic workunits 6,573
SETI@home classic CPU time 33,680 hours

But this account (Cliff):
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=487675

... can be merged with your current one
only if you succeed to remember (or just try) old emails
("The only option is: ..." in Message 1190389)

The only significant change will be the date:

(SETI@home classic workunits will be added as text in your account
but will NOT be converted to BOINC credits)

P.S.
After my email about "User search (strange for me) results" (in short described in Message 1190328)
David Anderson fixed the issue and even added the User ID to results :)

Yeah, problems, problems etc etc...
Trouble is I have no idea what the password is for either Gianarth or Cliff on that email addy.. And I've tried a good few that I commonly used:-(
Didnt need to merge the Boinc a/c all I needed to do was loginto it and change its email addy to my current one.. Same really with the other one..
One would merge I assume since its got classic wu's the other well if all of them were on the same email addy that might end up as a 'very' small private team:-)
As it stands I'll have a go at more potential passwords whenever the bug bites and leave it at that:-)
