I can't seem to get the screensaver graphics to work on any of my PowerPC Macs; not even my Dual 1.42 G4 with a Radeon 9800 Pro. The screensaver graphics work fine on my Lenovo T60 Hackintosh running OS X 10.5.8. What gives??? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Renick Marsh

iMac G5 (PPC); Mac OS 10.4.11

I'm having the same problem.

Just yesterday, decided to try for the first time the BOINC SETI@Home screensaver. After unexpected troubles configuring BOINC to run as a screensaver only, I found that no graphics are displayed. Clicking the "Show Graphics" button in the Tasks tab of the manager, or on the graphics display in the simple version, does nothing. The screensaver perpetually displays "Starting screensaver graphics. Please wait..." Looking at the Console log, I see a large number of entries

Process creation (../../projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setigraphics_6.05_powerpc-apple-darwin) failed: errno=13

A little searching showed that errno 13 is a permissions error. Looking at the permissions in the terminal shows

-rwxrwx--x 1 boinc_ma boinc_pr 1921088 Mar 3 18:52 setiathome_6.05_powerpc-apple-darwin
-rw-rw---- 1 boinc_ma boinc_pr 424024 Mar 3 18:42 setigraphics_6.05_powerpc-apple-darwin

i.e. the calculation binary has executable permissions but the graphics binary doesn't.

Changing the permissions on the graphics to be the same as the calculation binary didn't fix the problem. When the graphics display is attempted, crashdump crashes (!)

Mar 4 13:46:16 iMacG5 crashdump[440]: crashdump crashed
Mar 4 13:46:17 iMacG5 crashdump[440]: crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/crashdump.crash.log

I can only conclude that the graphics binary isn't compiled correctly for either PPC or 10.4.11 or both.

Any help resolving this - or a pointer where to submit a bug report - would be most welcome.

The SETI@home screensaver was running perfectly well under 10.4.11 on my G5 tower until last weekend, when I upgraded the system to 10.5.8, reinstalled BOINC, and reattached to my projects. Since then, the SETI@home graphics haven't run at all on that machine. The work units are processing and validating OK and the screensavers from the other projects are all fine.

It's no big deal for me, as I don't spend a lot of time watching the graphics. But it's nice to know that other people are experiencing the same thing and that it's not just a fault in my set-up. I suspect that the PowerPC screensaver was mislaid or made inoperable in one of the upgrades to the application last year.

I see there's another thread in this forum on the same subject, although that one doesn't specifically mention PowerPCs. Neither seems to have been read by anyone who can explain or fix the problem. I think I'll bring it up on the Number crunching forum.

Hello. Is the "floating" graphics the only one available? I seem to remember there used to be several different styles to select, but I can't find the settings for this.

Thanks

Go to your SETI@home preferences and select "Custom" for "Graphics preferences". After updating the preferences, you can edit individual parameters.
