	If a signal was detected, would they tell us?... seriously... EH No way man. If you are the one finding the ET signal, you will be whisked away by some Earthly security organization (probably a U.S one, like NSA or CIA), and hidden for the rest of your life in a secret cave or similar place (if not outright deleted), before you can say "hello ET", or utter a word about it to anyone. Your name and everything that tells about your very existence on this planet, will be removed from every record in your own country, as well as from any country where any sign of your existence can be found. The SETI lab will be demolished and all SETI staff will suffer the same consequence as you, and the record of the ET signal will be hidden from the general populace forever. So, just hope that nobody will ever find a signal from ET, but if they do the first sign of it, if it isn't you, will be that this project will be shut down for good, with some excuse like "we can't keep this running any longer, because we've run out of money" Don't think for one moment, that those that really runs this planet, will allow us peons to know for sure that we're not alone in the Universe. Edit: So the reason I run SETI, is to be able to know exactly when ET is found. That will be the moment SETI@home goes offline for good. ____________ /The grumpy old Swede. 	@ Ricardo Lourenco (Neo) Well have a look at http://www.gpuug.org/. This organisation was founded by SETI@home volunteers like you and me and it's purpose is to help the SETI@home staff with handling of donations. There are currently 5674 dollars missing to purchase that dedicated NTPCKR machine. And 460 for hard disk drives for their new storage server. Also have a look at Numer Crunchin forum, GPU Users Group Fundraiser: Hardware Donations for S@H. If you can spare some money, even only 5 or 10 dollars, it helps. 	What Sten-Arne is mentioning here I have probably have seen earlier on as well. Anyway, shouldn't we be looking for digital signals, not analog ones, meaning that the definition narrowband signal becomes obsolete and having no meaning at all? Our own systems are going digital, television sets dealing with frequencies are being replaced by pre-programmed digital tuners. Also DAB or digital radio will soon be launched here, replacing an awkward system that is currently in existence. Mobile phones have preset frequencies, making its users unable to scan the mobile net like you are able to do with existing radio tuners. Soon you will probably not be able to tune between stations either. As far as I know digital signals won't transmit anywhere near as far as analog. Once a digital signal starts to pixelate, is degrades quickly with information being lost. Quite a lot can be gleamed from an analog signal which keeps all of the information over long distances, as our computers are doing just that. Steve ____________ Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Ah, but, for those of us with N9JFE or G1FYE and the like in their name, we can watch the watchmen, though the `interesting` stuff is all encrypted spread spectrum etc these days :(

	the transmitter is orbiting a star. the receiver is orbiting a star. the stares are in different orbits around the galaxy. the relative velocity between the two is constantly changing. hence, frequency drift. jpb

	I used to run my computer on seti for quite a while then I got a new computer and just got back to it with a new name. We on earth have been using radio for just about 100 years, and recently new modulation schemes such as spread spectrum and frequency hopping which can be very difficult to detect even if you are looking for them. Any advanced civilization may be using techniques we don't have a clue how to detect. Perhaps they now use gravity waves or quantum duality to communicate. A very advanced civilazation would use ways we would feel are magic and beyond our understanding. Still, I like SETI and maybe, just maybe a signal will be out there. Paul ____________
