Your post here tells you, if you listen, when the craving will go away.
Currently you are not an ex-smoker, but someone trying to give up cigarettes.

Its two things:
Physically, once you have flushed the nicotine from your body the physical craving will go.
Mentally, you have to make the change of habit from being someone trying to give up smoking, to being an ex-smoker. That takes more determination than starting the "trying to give up" phase.

The fact that you ordered your pack before you had realised tells me, and should tell you, that you are still running on the same habit, and are constantly fighting against your own Pavlovian responses.
You know full well that when you go to the gas station you buy a pack, and that habit is still in your head. Change your habits, and get the nicotine out of your system. Then, and only then will you join the ranks of us ex-smokers.

You appear to have taken the harder road because the easier road I told you about in a post above looked too hard at first glance. However you can still do it your way, most people do.

When people use nicotine patches or gum, they are using them to allay the physical craving while they deal with the mental task of becoming a non-smoker. Once they have mastered that, they then have to deal with the nicotine habit that they still have. It is a very long, drawn out, two stage process.

Since they have by that time hopefully, conquered the mental dragon, the physical dragon is less fearsome. However defeating both dragons at once is only one single fight, and you can use one dragon to help defeat the other, so it can be over more quickly. It really does make some sense, even proverbially.

Actually that sounds like the clerk had gotten the pack down and ready for him, not that Mark ordered them.

Correct......LOL. I didn't come THAT close.
He was just so used to me popping in for a tanka, a ticket, and cigs, that HE got them out and plopped them down on the counter in front of me.

Indeed it is not just the bad habits.

This:
Relax on the couch after a nice meal........shaZaaaaaam.......have a few beers.......shaZaaaaaaam.......whap, whop, who's your daddy?

Tells you that it is the normal everyday habits that trigger the craving. They are the things that give the other dragon strength. Breaking ALL your habits at once involves 'No couch after a nice meal; No 'few beers'. Those are the triggers. The bell that makes the dog salivate.

Why give the dragon attacks of opportunity? The water routine does more than the flushing and scrubbing away of nicotine. It also replaces many of the habits with a new routine, which helps attack both Dragons at once.

All the best of luck Mark. I really am rooting for you. ... and anyone else your lead inspires to follow suit.

here is a little definition of one word that everybody thinks they know what it means and we use it frequently .... that word is the word

DECIDE: comes from the two Latin words

DE = "put to"

CIDE = "DEATH" hint insectiCIDE, herbiCIDE

we often use the word decide and choice liberally and believe they are one and the same ... the difference is one comes from the head and one from the heart. Purpose in your heart my friend and it will be permanent! Good Luck!

Have not really noticed any change in taste yet, but I do seem to be getting a bit more sense of smell lately.
And it's nice coming home from work and not having the house smell so much of stale smoke.

Don't worry about noticing a change in your sense of taste, or smell. Let me explain:
When I my brother quit smoking a few years back it took him a long time to realise that things were tasting "different". The change was slow and steady, not a sudden switch being thrown. He said he realised when chomping his way through one of Gran's scones (or more likely knowing us, a dozen of them!), it tasted "fresher", but he knew it had just come out of the oven long enough to cool to "eating temperature"....

(In earlier years we both suffered burns to our tongues due to being in too much of a hurry to translate the HOT scones from the cooling tray to our stomachs)

Indeed, welcome back. It was a little strange without you here.

You seem to be doing better with your nonsmoking than I am with my weight loss.

On the taste thing, that makes me think. I have a friend who smokes, and he also puts a ton of salt on his food "to make it taste better." He even salts pizza, which to me is one of the saltiest things there is. He mixes salt and pepper into his ketchup before dipping his fries in it, while I brush most of the salt off my fries (if I eat them at all). I wonder if he would find he needs less salt if he quit smoking. He recently went on a med for his blood pressure, but he hasn't cut down on the salt (or the smoking) even though it affects BP.

Stale smoke smell: if I spend a couple hours at my friend's house in the evening, I can't stand myself the next morning until I wash my hair, and I really hate it if I have to wear the same pants the next day.

Anyway, it sounds like you're going to force me to make that donation I keep threatening. Now, what's the current balance on my credit card...?

As noted in the GPUUG thread, $25 this morning to the upload/download server drive. If you fail now, you owe it $50 more.

(Don't fail.)
