That was easily the most muddled/garbled article I've read...

True but irrelevant:) Being able to Plug 'n' Play a GPU on any ol' (thunderlightningthingy) laptop... priceless!

More AMD news:
AMD to Launch Radeon HD 7950 on January 31

True True. I did like the part about the plug in video card for laptops. If that could somehow be modified (higher voltage, full size cards and so forth) then it'd be quite fun.

I was thinking about one of those ViDock things to use a PCIe card in my old Pentium M notebook.

Someone has a 7970 crunching over at Colatz
The drivers are a bit `new` - HD7970 (8.921.2 RC11 AMD Radeonâ„¢ HD 7900 driver)

Hal9000, that's about the 2nd coolest electronic toy I've ever seen!

Now, how to get >1 ViDock onto one pci-e/expresscard i/f?? :)

EDTI: If BOINC can recognize an externally connected video card and it can be used in GPU mode, that would certainly be a big PLUS! Especially for PCI-e slot bound motherboard/laptop owners...

In my case it is ExpressCard 1.0 so only 250 MB/s instead of the 625 MB/s that 2.0 offers. So effectively a PCIe 1.0 x1 connection. Granted in my case that could reduce the amount of work a GPU could do crunching. However a fraction of something is greater than nothing. Besides it would be funny to see my old Pentium M with a RAC of like 10,000 or something silly.

and all for a good cause! Cause you can! LOL

My ancient HP7150 PII (MMX only) laptop has just a PCMCIA slot, but I have an Expresscard adapter for it.

Hi Alex, I hope I find you well. Good links, but out of my price range I'm afraid ...

Hey Chris! It's snowing here!:D

As for the prices, here's the latest from the grapevine:
AMD will release low end cards mid Febuary.
In March they will be releasing GPUs just below the 7950.

Intel will be releasing Ivy Bridge 22nm on April 8th.
Apparently Nvidia are waiting for this date and will be releasing their 560 replacement just before the Intel launch. By the end of June they will release most of their single GPU cards. Also it's rumoured the Kepler cards are a huge improvement over Fermi and far better than the AMD cards (don't shoot the messenger). IF this is true (big if) then the prices for 7970/7950 should be down by 30% come summertime (maybe more).

All of the above is based on rumours. If Nvidia really do start releasing Kepler in April, then all the dust (and prices) should have settled by the end of Summer. My best guess is that's the time to invest in a new GPU. Also, sometime before Xmas Windows 8 should be out so I can see a lot of people upgrading before the end of 2012. Should be a fun year:)

I'm sure that Nvidia will take crown in terms of performance. More important is price/performance ratio, compared to AMD new 79x0 and previous line GF5x0... Will see soon :)

Well, I hope they'll have something that comes in under 75 W as my new "Enterprise" [(hp)] machine has no PCI-E power connectors to run a heftier GPU than its current GT440.

Two affordable GCN cards today:

AMD Radeon HD 7750 & Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition Review: Evading The Price/Performance Curve

AMD Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1 GB

AMD Radeon HD 7770 And 7750 Review: Familiar Speed, Less Power

And BSN claim to know the...

Real NVIDIA Kepler, GK104, GeForce GTX "670/680" Specs (Leak)

Those are good comparisons. I favor the anandtech review as it includes the 5750 that I have in my HTPC. From those tests I would say I could upgrade to a 7770 to have lower power usage, less noise, and more grunt.
I also like that the charts had the 4870 and 6870 as I just upgraded my other machine from the 4800 to the 6800.

Radeon HD 7870 and HD 7850 launched

"AMD is taking the wraps off the final piece of the Southern Islands puzzle: Pitcairn"
"AMD is formally unveiling the 7800 series today, but it will not go on sale until the 19th, 2 weeks from now"

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5625/amd-radeon-hd-7870-ghz-edition-radeon-hd-7850-review-rounding-out-southern-islands (20 pages)

"AMD has to get several things right about the products it's launching today, because the competitiveness of the entire HD 7000 series hangs on its success. First, it needs to create a sizable performance jump, over the previous-generation Radeon HD 6800 series; second, its new chip has to prove Graphics CoreNext as being a viable investment for AMD by meeting some basic cost/performance, performance/die-area, and performance/Watt figures."

"The two are based on AMD's brand new GPU, codenamed "Pitcairn". Built on the 28 nm fabrication process, this new chip holds 2.8 billion transistors. "Pitcairn" is a 100% upscale of the "Cape Verde" silicon, on which the Radeon HD 7700 series is based. It has 1280 Graphics CoreNext stream processors, arranged in 20 Graphics CoreNext Compute Units (GCN CUs)."

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7850_HD_7870/ (30 pages)

"We have to discuss power consumption, as I'm riddled how AMD pulls that off. If we stay focused on the R7870 for a minute you'll agree with me that it's in the same performance level as a GTX 580 right?
Well, the R7870 used roughly a 100 Watts LESS then that GTX 580. When we reverse calculate and measure the power consumption the R7870 uses roughly 130 Watt where the GTX 580 hovers at a 235~240W, and that's measured in game while it's peaking and stressed. So for the R7850... well we measure roughly 106 Watt. Amazing stuff really."

http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-radeon-hd-7850-and-7870-review/ (24 pages)

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7870-review-benchmark,3148.html

So that's AMD done for this round. Now let's see if nVidia can launch Kepler next month!

I know it was written in December, but so was anything else I could find. Doesn't look like it's gonna be a long wait...

Also, I found some nice tables courtesy of DailyTech
