Imagine one day human are able to travel to other star system. And found life on a planet that is some 8 light years away from Earth. It sure will be a big discovery but it might not be a good news for human. Imagine if we discovery a sad situation on that planet where slavery is a common practice and where an entire ethnic group of people become slave of other ethnic group. It happen on Earth many thousands of years ago (if you believe the story in the Old Testament). It could happen on other planet too. Now, the next question is: Are we going to help the slave to escape from their master? Than our people on the space ship will have to divert most of their resource into helping the slave instead of concentrate their effort in exploring the new world. |

I would wait until night and free them when it is dark. You would stand a much better chance of escape. Unless it was a binary star system and therefore constantly light. In that case I would probably leave them ,as there is no point in us becoming slaves as well. |

It was happening on earth as recently as 150 years ago in the west and is still happening in isolated locations around the globe. For the most part we do very little to free oppressed people in the here and now so I doubt that we would do so if we ever reach an inhabited planet where slavery exists. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Why not! Imagine thousand or even 10 thousand years from now, As human civilization advance. Slavery and poverty are totally eliminated on Earth. Everyone become wealthy. Some people/group of people become so wealthy that they are able to fund their own space programme. They might built their own space ship and start journey to other Star system. This is one of the basic instinct of Human: "To built an transportation system, travel to some distant places to discover new world and populate the new world." This basic instinct is inside our gene, inherited from our forefather. But than, those (who wanted to travel to other Star system) better first master the skill of splitting the sea - in case they reach an inhabited planet where slavery system exists and they need to help the slave escape. Exodus 14:21 And when Moses' hand was stretched out over the sea, the Lord with a strong east wind made the sea go back all night, and the waters were parted in two and the sea became dry land. And the children of Israel went through the sea on dry land. |

I think you will find he parted the sea. I am not able to do this at this moment in time. I would therfore be pretty useless on or first voyage into space. Count me out till we destroy they slave nations, and I will turn up a bit later when it has all been sorted out. |

Figure out how much energy would be required to accelerate a 100,000 lb space ship from earth orbit to half the speed of light. Ignore relativistic effects and multiply by four to account for deceleration at the destination and also the return trip. Accelerate at say 2 G to establish a baseline. You will then get some feeling for how long we would be gone and possibly what type of engine and fuel would be necessary. |

Better not have just one engine either. If the doohickey fails, you aren't going to stop. And just where are you going to get the power to run a machine shop to build another doohickey if you don't have an engine? |

parting the sea ?/ Parthenogenesis happens all the time. Just not usually in primates like us. Who is to say whether it happens to ET? It may be normal reproductive behaviour. If the folks writing a couple of thousand years ago had known how common it was in other species, it might not have seemed such a magical/miraculous occurrence. Len I think I am. Therefore I am. I think. |
