Hello folks, I was wondering if this is possible and if so how I do it: I've got a very powerful machine but I use it for gaming alot and don't think it's a good idea to game on it heavily and then leave it on all night running Seti. So is there a way where by I can set Seti up so it starts and runs only when I'm away from my computer, as in when a screensaver would flick on. So if I go away for half an hour, a screensaver starts and Seti begins running. Then when I come back it automatically stops? All the best, Liam |

In your Computing preferences http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=global Set: Suspend work while computer is in use? yes 'In use' means mouse/keyboard activity in last XX minutes (link "Edit preferences" is at the bottom) Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

I've got a very powerful machine but I use it for gaming alot and don't think it's a good idea to game on it heavily and then leave it on all night running Seti. Any reason for this thought process? I ask because I have several gaming machines, including my "daily driver" that I continue to crunch SETI on in the background while gaming fairly heavily, and I leave it on 24/7 (when I can afford the electric bill) to crunch even when I'm not using it. |

I've got a very powerful machine but I use it for gaming alot and don't think it's a good idea to game on it heavily and then leave it on all night running Seti. I play battlefield 3 on a Hex core, which utilises all the cores and takes each to about 45% load. This allows the computer to run very smoothly without lag. It could handle more but it would moderately affect the milisection reactions between my computer and the fella I'm trying to gun down. I just want to make the best use of my machine for Seti in the time I can :) |

I've got a very powerful machine but I use it for gaming alot and don't think it's a good idea to game on it heavily and then leave it on all night running Seti. Interesting. I can understand the lag thing. The only time I ever experience lag in my games though is when I'm in a 25 person raid with too many graphics effects going on (I have the graphics options turned up to the max). Otherwise I can't even tell that BOINC is running in the background. Still, the lag can get really bad and I can see why you wouldn't want it. But what about the last part of your comment; "...don't think it's a good idea to game on it heavily and then leave it on all night running Seti." What is it about leaving it run all night that you think will be a problem? |

There are two ways to do that. 1) Use the BOINC screen saver. Make certain to allow some time for the project screen savers. 2) If you want a temporary display of what is happening right now while you are at the keyboard, you can go to the tasks tab on the advanced view, select a running task that supports graphics, and show graphics. NOTE: most of the optimized applications have turned this ability off. BOINC WIKI |
