Message 1175146 - Posted: 2 Dec 2011, 12:19:27 UTC

Good morning all,
In the last 120 hours I have been receiving backoff messages for UL and Dl's.
Then if I do get the Dl queue cleared I can not get any new work for either CPU or GPU. Right now I have 58 tasks in my cache 45 are pending DL (I usually have close to 400 - 500 in cache).
I have not been able to get any GPU tasks for almost 24 hours.

Yes, I have been trying to connect both direct and thru various proxies, but still can not get this cleared up.

Thanks for you help...

Select one of the stuck downloads and hit the "re-try" button.
I've found that once you get a pile of stuck downloads you will end up stuck in a vicious cycle, nothing will up/down load until you've got them cleared, and the retry time will just keep getting longer until it hits the limits.

Try connecting using this proxy server, a lot of us are using it with very good results. Also see the "More HE Problems" thread

To use a proxy server (For a version 6.10.xx BOINC client)
Go Advanced Tab->Options->HTTP Proxy.
Enter 69.163.96.2 Port 8080

Let us know how you go.

Since you don't have newer ATI cards, I also recommend you "downgrade" your boinc to version 6.10.60.
It is not possible to achieve anything with 6.12.x on seti due to its ridiculous back-off times.

As a footnote, I have just "downgraded" Boinc to the above version 6.10.60.
Minimal back off times are a breath of fresh air. This version babysits for you. Just to watch it in action it is pure joy, after months of pure hell.
It will not give up, or go to sleep, until it has downloaded, uploaded or reported WU's.

Thank you, thank you Khangollo so much for the advice.

Regards,

A

PS, running with Nvidia, not ATI.

Listen, and understand. That 6.10.60 is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are downloaded.

;)

I will backoff and downgrade to the previous version.

As for using proxies I have been using them now for 3 weeks. Most of the time I have no problems. This all started on Tuesday (weekly outage). I went back and took a look it seems like I have most of problems on Tuesday and Wednesday and finally clears up by Sunday then I go right back into this awful mode of not getting any wu, most of the time not getting any GPU wu's.

As for the system I am running its amd x6 1100T with a GTX 580 GPU.

I process in a normal about 200 - 300 WU's a day. The CPU averages about 90 minutes/wu and the GPU does them in about 90 seconds.

Is this a temp fix?

Did two of my computers and did help.

On my install of Boinc:
To access the settings: TOOLS > DISPLAY AND NETWORK OPTIONS > HTTP PROXY

I have tried 3 different proxy servers sometimes it works sometimes I still get the same message.

As of right now I finally got 3 cuda_fermi wu (that will last me all but 5 minutes) and 29 cpu wu's, which are still Dl and most likely will take the rest of the night to do. Yes I am using a proxy to get these.

I am jealous that you are still able to use that proxy; it will no longer work for me. I am starting to downgrade about a hundred nodes from 6.12.x to 6.10.60.

When downgrading, is replacing boincmgr.exe with the appropriate version boincmgr.exe sufficient, or do you have to replace all the other files in the BOINC directory as well?

I am not sure maybe one of the experts can comment. I am using the installer just to be safe.

I tried to downgrade BOINC to 6.10.60.
What happened was that I lost the SETI project and all the WU's in the BOINC manager.
However when reinstalling 6.12.34 they all where back.
So my question is, how do you do a proper downgrade?

If you want to downgrade from Boinc 6.12.x to 6.10.x, uninstall 6.12.x then install 6.10.x, if you just run the 6.10.x installer after having 6.12.x installed, you'll have run the 6.10.x installer a 2nd time to do a repair as well.

If you change Boinc Manager for an earlier version you aren't changing anything that will make the scheduling better, as you're not downgrading to an earlier Boinc client.

Thanks.
Just downgraded. It will be nice not to have to hit retry endlessly while i'm at home just to get new work.

Hi, I'm running 6.12.34 and want to know what proxy settings I can use? Are the 6.10.xx settings ok or should I use something else?

A proxy doesn't care what version you are on of Boinc.

Thanks I thought it might from the conversation above. Unfortunately though I've tried the settings mentioned "69.163.96.2 Port 8080" and it wont connect. I actually get better results without the proxy, but those results are so bad it reminds me of when I had a 28.8kbs dial up modem. So does anyone have any ideas? Would my Norton 360 firewall need to be changed so I can use the proxy?

Probably need to find another one, the original proxy died for me several days ago.
A very sad time.
