Unless specified by the thread originator, the threads are allowed to wander where they may. The Mods are the ones in control of the forums and the individual is in control of their thread. If you do not choose to specify what the topic is then don't expect it to go in the direction you expected. Starting a thread with no guidance is no better than letting a spinning to loose on a flat surface. Nobody knows where that thing is going. All we know is it will go somewhere.

I have to say the current crop of mods is doing an excellent job of enforcing topics on threads. Over in the Q&A boards, it is strictly enforced as it should be. Over here in the talk radio board it is allowed to wander far and wide as it should.

If a thread creator wants strict enforcement, he needs to say so where everyone can read it.

Now about that siren song ...

That's why I have Netflix. And I read a book once in awhile.

Military Channel has a Nice Series going on Nazi Collaborators. I enjoyed learning about The Beast of the Balkans.

Anything good on NASA TV?

"Fiftyseven channels and nothing's on"

What would be on the channel if you could decide the content?
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

That's a good question and before I try to answer it I'll have to ponder it for a while.

If you are taking me literally and want to know what I think constitutes good TV I agree with Chris's answer with a splash of good Sci Fi.

Originally I was alluding to some of the recent topics around here that just don't seem to me to more than silliness. An example of what I think is an interesting subject for discussion is one that started today in the SETI section pondering the need for a planet to have at least one large moon for life to develope.

That's right, Bob. You would think that out of the 3 million SETI participants more of them would have a legitimate scientific background and be literate and willing enough to engage in a worthwhile dialog. Where are the exobiologists, the radio communications engineers and the signal processing experts to shed light on the questions involving the premise of doing SETI at all.

where are they? probably at home with their families.

lets put it this way. My brother is an auto mechanic. The last think he wants to do in his spare time is help fix someones engine for free.

Most likely conducting research. I doubt the SETI Politics forum is a good place to look for them.

Yeah! There ya go! Talk about SETI politics. NASA stopped funding SETI a long time ago. But with bi-partisan support it continues rolling. If a theory came out that advanced aliens would have to be Communistic in order to survive the vast distances and time, would we lose all conservative support? And how do SETI supporters present themselves to the general public without appearing wacko? Here's a conservative slant. If THEY are out there, I want to know all about them before they know about me.

I wasn't picking on the politics sub forum specifically. I just figured my initial statement was best placed here than in the seti or non seti science sections. I have initiated a few topics from time to time but I guess what is interesting enough to me to make a post doesn't interest very many of the forum participants.

I have no problem telling people I know that I, through my computer, am participating in the SETI project and for the most part they may think I am wasting electricity by leaving my computer on all the time so it can analyze data packets but they don't think I'm nuts. I hope.

Nobody is interested in the reason(s) we (the U.S.) are crashing (with mathematical certainty) as a nation?

would your answer be democrats?

Nah, the 99% don't care, the 1% are doing just fine thank you and have no incentive to care.

Mathematical certainty? You want certainty from the discipline of fuzzy set theory? The discipline that tells us there are more irrational than rational numbers and just as many imaginary numbers? If you need certainty, go to a priest, I doubt you'll find much in the natural sciences.

As for your comment on the interest, or lack thereof, in the crash of the U.S., isn't it a tad oxymoronic? Simply making the statement suggests that you have an interest, and as you are presumably somebody, then it follows that it is not nobody that is interested. While the number of interested people may be depressingly small, it is > 0.

Yes lets discuss grammar instead of issues because tagents are so much more fun than actually talking about the topic at hand

And there was me thinking the topic at hand was Bob's feeling that the threads here at SETI do not have much variation, rather than Guy's opinion that the U.S. is crashing. Though if grammar is not suitable, let's talk punctuation instead ;-)

if ee cummings can write in all lower case, I can end a post without a period. I call it the thought to be continued. I intentionally do it.

Now as far a punctuation and grammar are concerned I don't care what it looks like on a forum but I get perturbed and perplexed that I find it in an edited book or manual

Which is typically represented by an ellipsis.

It was not the lack of a period that I was drawing attention to in my previous post, but let's not get into that ...
