Dead stowaways landed on Mars in August 2012. That's for certain. But due to their diminutive size -- they were microbes -- it was easy to miss them as NASA's Curiosity Mars rover touched down. Less certain, but much more consequential, is whether any Earth-based bacteria survived the trip with it. On Monday, scientists in Boston presented research strongly suggesting that they might have.

The Earthlings that might already be living on Mars

Interesting.

Thanks for posting that story, Lynn. It's theoretically possible then, but probably highly unlikely, that some hardy microbes are either still attached to the hull of Curiosity, or have since jumped off and made Mars their new home!

Yes, Gordon, I do indeed think that it's possible some microbes are on Mars.
If they (microbes), can survive the cold then it's possible.

The new Cosmos series had an episode about how microbes can survive in space for a long time in rocks that have naturally been blasted into space, ether by asteroid strike or volcanic activity. The theory was after microbes were established on Earth they could have been blasted into space by massive asteroid strikes. These strikes would have sterilized the Earth. After Earth's recovery and condensation of water the returning microbe filled rocks could have reseeded the Earth or any other planet with liquid water present. This seeding could be passed form planet to planet until the entire galaxy was populated. When we find ET the first thing we have to do is put her on one of those who's the father DNA testing shows.

NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover will complete a Martian year -- 687 Earth days -- on June 24, having accomplished the mission's main goal of determining whether Mars once offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

Curiosity Finds Iron Meteorite on Mars

This rock encountered by NASA's Curiosity Mars rover is an iron meteorite called "Lebanon," similar in shape and luster to iron meteorites found on Mars by the previous generation of rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. Lebanon is about 2 yards or 2 meters wide (left to right, from this angle). The smaller piece in the foreground is called "Lebanon B."

Well, Lebanon is better than what I first thought of when I saw it - "blown tire tread?".

NASA’s Long-Lived Mars Opportunity Rover Sets Off-World Driving Record

NASA's Opportunity Mars rover, which landed on the Red Planet in 2004, now holds the off-Earth roving distance record after accruing 25 miles (40 kilometers) of driving. The previous record was held by the Soviet Union's Lunokhod 2 rover.

NASA Mars Rover Curiosity Nears Mountain-Base Outcrop

As it approaches the second anniversary of its landing on Mars, NASA's Curiosity rover is also approaching its first close look at bedrock that is part of Mount Sharp, the layered mountain in the middle of Mars' Gale Crater.

This full-circle panorama of the landscape surrounding NASA's Curiosity Mars rover on July 31, 2014, offers a view into sandy lower terrain called "Hidden Valley," which is on the planned route ahead. It combines several images from Curiosity's Navigation Camera. South is at the center.

Curiosity Mars Rover Prepares for Fourth Rock Drilling

The team operating NASA's Curiosity Mars rover has chosen a rock that looks like a pale paving stone as the mission's fourth drilling target, if it passes engineers' evaluation.
