looks like an ancient riverbed with the water pushing up the smaller rocks onto the bank.

Does it matter if we go to Mars or not. Billions of bucks down the tube for absolutely no reason. WE cannot live on it. And it wouldn't matter if we could. WE cannot live in space period. Sooner or later "WE" have got to get off this brick, and out of this system. The latest guess is that the moon is going to stuff things up with it's orbit problems in 1 million years.
But we are too big, like weigh too much, eat too much tucker and take too much energy to move. And there are too many of us and size reduction will be necessary.

For Climateprediction.net I have 77% of Disc C free, that's 359.85 GB waiting for your data.

Slight hiccup....

Wind Sensor damaged

"Javier Gomez-Elvira, the principal investigator on the broken instrumentation - the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (Rems) - said he was hopeful of finding a good way to get past the issue.

"We are working to recover as much functionality as possible," he told reporters".

Let's hope they succeed.

The news article indicated that a work around is quite probable.

The Dolomiti mountains are more beautiful. But they were made by living beings, since they are made from skeletons of marine animals.

Doesn't this photo just make you feel that this planet Mars has a story to tell to us.

Wow! Great photo!
Letting my imagination take over hence, pin-point things that require further investigation, because they have very interesting features about them.

Nick,
Wow, what an incredible picture. Its funny, the images coming back from Curiosity seem to be so Earth-like. They are almost like pictures taken in the desert in Arizona or something like that. Shame there is no air on Mars that we humans could breath. If there was an Earth like atmosphere on Mars, you can be sure there would be a lot more money being spent on trying to get humans to Mars.

Great picture!

Lynn, Johnney; I agree with both of you.

There going to have to land a science lab on Mars.
One day soon, the big powers are going to have to decide collectively what they wont,
space travel and exploration or armaments....they wont be able to afford both. So hopefully
someone will start the ball rolling and get all to go for space travel and exploration....
....it's going to be far more rewarding in the long term.

History has a habit of repeating itself. And people always seem to choose war. Which is a shame.

Some idiot will start a war here on earth over someone exploring `their` part of space or planet and stealing `their` materials,
O what a stupid species we can be

If we ever get a human exploration to Mars, couple of question come into play.

Does NASA, Own Mars? Does the USA, own Mars?? Will Mars, need a president? The questions can go on, and on.

some photos are back online.

This mosaic from the Mast Camera on NASA's Curiosity rover shows the view looking toward the "Glenelg" area, where three different terrain types come together. All three types are observed from orbit with the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. By driving there, Curiosity will be able to explore them.

One of the three terrain types is light-toned with well-developed layering, which likely records deposits of sedimentary materials. There are also black bands that run through the area and might constitute additional layers that alternate with the light-toned layers. The black bands are not easily seen from orbit and are on the order of about 3.3-feet (1-meter) thick. Both of these layer types are important science targets.

I think there is a UN treaty already in place, kind of like Antarctica.

NASA Rover Finds Old Streambed On Martian Surface
http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/news/whatsnew/index.cfm?FuseAction=ShowNews&NewsID=1360

Qoute NASA:
"PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Curiosity rover mission has found evidence a stream once ran vigorously across the area on Mars where the rover is driving. There is earlier evidence for the presence of water on Mars, but this evidence -- images of rocks containing ancient streambed gravels -- is the first of its kind."
