Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Do we still mean it?

The wretched refuse
...accumulating at The Occupy Movement Camps

the golden door
...at The Nearest Corporation offering a Job and Responsibilities.

Yep, she means it.

My great great grandmother saw the Lady as she approached Ellis Island in 1907.
She had $20 to her name, 4 children in hand and another to be born soon after her arrival. She made a train ride to Cleveland to meet fellow travelers friends and family to start a new life.

Bring those with the spirit to try, don't fault them for their customs or smells or foreign actions or accents. Travelers come here for the same reasons my Great great grandmother did. Many here have forgotten how good we actually have it. We can learn a great deal from those that are new to the Land that we have a precious right here. Don't squander it

So, we are of German descent, who passed the Statue of Liberty, some 50 years ago? Okay, surprised at your modus operandi given your age, but I guess it takes all sorts .....

Let that be a lesson to ya; some younger people can be opinionated but respectable while some older people can be quite the handful. ;-D I have some older Polish relatives that are quite similar.

About the only country that really engaged in sending the US prisoners was Cuba. We seemed quite willing to take them at the time. Most of the folks who moved through Ellis Island in the 1880's to 1910 would not be allowed in today. And had that happened then, we'd be a much poorer country today.
